Delhi High Court to hear plea over sexual crimes against animals in July
A bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela on May 28 posted the matter on July 16 to enable the petitioner to bring more facts on record.
The Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) in its PIL highlighted the "complete repeal" of Section 377 (unnatural sexual offences) of IPC under the newly-enacted Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
While Section 377 of the IPC was rightly read down by the Supreme Court in the 2018 Navtej Singh Johar judgment to decriminalise consensual same-sex relationships, its complete deletion from BNS inadvertently decriminalised sexual violence against animals, leaving them unprotected by law, it argued.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, the plea said, in its report on BNS highlighted the removal of Section 377, proposing reinstating it to address non-consensual sexual offences against men, transpersons and animals.
The plea, filed through advocate Varnika Singh, sought the restoration of the provision that specifically criminalised sexual crimes against animals under the erstwhile Section 377 of IPC.
In April alone, the PIL referred to a couple of crimes being reported in the national capital.
While a man was arrested in Shahdara area for allegedly raping several dogs, a pet dog, which succumbed later, was found unconscious on a road in Saket and a condom was retrieved from its intimate parts.
The PIL also referred to an incident in Coimbatore, where a construction worker was found sexually abusing a dog.
FIAPO's CEO Bharati Ramachandran, in a statement, said, "Animals cannot defend themselves. They deserve justice and protection from sexual violence under law.'

Accident that shook Hyd The accident took place at Nagarjuna Circle on July 1, 2016 when a car driven by two youngsters, allegedly after drinking at a pub in Banjara Hills, hit the median, flipped and fell on the hatchback being driven by Ramya's uncle, P Rajesh. Ramya, Rajesh and her grandfather Madhusudhana Chary died in the accident. The family was returning to their home in Borabanda after picking Ramya up from her school in Secunderabad. The accident sent shockwaves across the people - R Shravil, Kancha Vishnu Vineeth and Subhajit Bhattacharya - were named accused by Banjara Hills police in the case. Shravil was accused of driving the car that belonged to Vineeth, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, with the latter seated inside. Subhajit, the representative of Thank God Its Friday (TGIF), a pub in Banjara Hills where the two allegedly consumed liquor, was accused of serving alcohol to under-aged Shravil who was 20 years old at that time. One accused discharged Banjara Hills police charged Shravil and Vineeth under Sections 304 II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 326 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC in the chargesheet filed in Nov 2016. "The learned prosecution did not give any reply regarding the rulings replied upon by the counsel of the petitioner (Vineeth). Admittedly, there is no material on record to show that the petitioner has intentionally aided or abetted the commission of offence in the above case voluntarily. Therefore, in these circumstances, it is held that the petitioner has made out proper case forming the grounds for discharging him from the charges of offences under Sections 304 II, 326 of IPC and his entitled to be discharged from the offences," the additional metropolitan sessions judge said in the order. The only charge standing against Vineeth was violating the Motor Vehicle (MV) Act. A few months ago, the judge directed him to appear before the court. But he did not attend the court proceeding. In April 2025, the court issued a NBW against him. In the same month, during one of the hearings, Banjara Hills police returned the NBW as his whereabouts were allegedly not known. The matter is coming up for hearing again on July 8.

Ponzi scheme: CID arrests COO of Falcon Group
Hyderabad: TheTelangana Crime Investigation Department (CID) arrested a Chief Operating Officer of the Falcon invoicing company from Bathinda, Punjab involved in inducing the depositors under the pretext of high interest rates with short term plans and cheating 4,065 depositors to the tune of Rs 792 crore. Police arrested Aaryan Singh Chhabra (39) on July 4 in Punjab and brought him to Hyderabad on Sunday. The accused was produced before the Magistrate at Hyderabad for judicial remand. In addition to Aaryan Singh, 9 persons have been arrested in this case so far. According to the CID, the accused cheated the depositors, by developing Falcon Invoice Discounting Application and creating fake deals on the name of reputed MNCs, induced the depositors under the pretext of high interest rates with short term plans and collected about Rs 4,215 crore from 7,056 depositors, out of which 4,065 victims were cheated to the tune of Rs 792 crore. Following the complaints of victims, three cases were registered U/sec 316(2), 318(4), 61(2) of BNS and Section 5 of TSPDEF Act, 1999 at EOW PS Cyberabad and transferred to CID, TG, Hyderabad for further investigation. Additionally, 8 more cases are registered against the accused company and its directors across India. Charu Sinha, Additional Director General of Police, CID, TG, said that the accused company Capital Protection Force Pvt., Ltd., developed Falcon Invoice Discounting Application and advertised through Social Media platforms – Google, YouTube, Instagram and through Tele-callers, created fake deals in the name of MNCs and collected crores of rupees as deposits from the innocent depositors and issued invoice receipts and agreements and cheated the public. 'Aaryan who is accused 5 in the case was actively involved with the accused 2 Amar Deep Kumar, MD of the Company and other accused persons to attract depositors and cheated the gullible victims. He was the face of the scam and dealt with the victims and issued the receipts. He collected strategic deposits to a tune of Rs 14,35,00,000 from the victims on behalf of the company,' said Charu Sinha. Aaryan diverted an amount of Rs 1,62,55,619 to his account from the funds of Falcon. Soon after the reporting of the crime, he fled away to Nanded and from there to Bathinda, Punjab and took shelter in a Gurdwara. On information, a special team of CID Telangana went to Bathinda, Punjab and apprehended him. Police seized two cell phones and incriminating documents from his possession.
