Middle East: Netanyahu to 'update' Gaza war plan – DW – 08/05/2025

Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu is set to hold a cabinet meeting to "update" Gaza war goals. Israeli media reported that new plans could involve occupying all of Gaza. Follow DW for more.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with his security cabinet to discuss intensifying military operations in Gaza.
He reaffirmed goals including defeating Hamas, securing hostage release and eliminating future threats from Gaza.
Israeli media reports suggest Netanyahu may push to seize the entire enclave.Israel will partially reopen entry of goods for trade in Gaza through local vendors to decrease its dependence on humanitarian aid, the agency under Israeli military that oversees civil affairs in the Palestinian territories said Tuesday.
"As part of formulating the mechanism, a limited number of local merchants were approved by the defence establishment, subject to several criteria and strict security screening," the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) said.
"This aims to increase the volume of aid entering the Gaza Strip, while reducing reliance on aid collection by the UN and international organizations," the agency said.
Palestinian and UN officials said Gaza needs around 600 aid trucks to enter per day to meet the humanitarian requirements, the number Israel used to allow into Gaza before the war.
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that he will convene a security cabinet meeting to update his war plans and instruct the military on how to achieve his objectives in Gaza.
Israeli media outlets, including Channel 12 and The Jerusalem Post, quoted officials as saying the 'updated strategy' may involve expanding the offensive and capturing the entire Palestinian enclave.
According to the reports, cabinet ministers are expected to meet on Tuesday to endorse the plan.
'We must continue to stand together and fight together to achieve all our war objectives: the defeat of the enemy, the release of our hostages, and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel,' Netanyahu said at the start of a regular cabinet meeting.
During the meeting, he added that later in the week he would instruct the military on how 'to achieve the three war objectives we have set.'
The plan has not been officially confirmed, but the Palestinian Authority's foreign ministry condemned what it described as a 'leaked' plan and called on the international community to intervene.

Israel's security cabinet is expected to approve Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to secure the release of hostages by expanding the military offensive in Gaza.
But the prime minister is facing increasing pressure from inside and outside Israel.
On Monday, hundreds of retired Israeli security officials sent a letter to former US President Donald Trump, urging him to push Israel toward an immediate end to the war in Gaza. They called on Trump to "steer" Netanyahu toward a ceasefire.
Later on Tuesday, the UN Security Council is set to discuss the fate of the hostages. But the conversation will likely also turn to Israel's military actions in the Palestinian territory.
In this blog, we take a closer look at all these developments.

How Trump's Love For TV Is Shaping US Diplomacy

Donald Trump's sudden concern about starving Palestinians was a major shift for the US president, who had previously ignored the endless cries for help from aid groups. So what changed? In his words, it was images of emaciated children in Gaza that Trump saw on television -- his main window into the world that has long shaped his political and diplomatic decision-making. Trump made clear his affection for the small screen in late July when asked if he agreed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a major US ally, that there was no famine in Gaza. "Based on television, I would say not particularly, because those children look very hungry," said Trump, a former reality TV star. "That's real starvation stuff. I see it, and you can't fake that." Since then, the 79-year-old has repeated that aid must be brought to people living in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory, though he has stopped of any major diplomatic moves. "Trump has a reputation for not reading anything, including the briefing papers that his aides prepare for him, and for always believing that he knows better than his staff or anyone else does," said Dan Kennedy, a journalist professor at Northeastern University. "So it's not surprising that he would be affected by images on television, especially since he is known to spend a lot of time watching TV." Trump has attended 22 intelligence briefings since taking office in January, according to an AFP tally, despite several reports having revealed that he lacks interest in written reports. However, his love for television is well-documented -- even when it comes to major decisions. In 2015, before he first entered the White House, the billionaire told a journalist asking how he educates himself on military strategy: "Well, I watch the shows." And a New York Times report recounted how Trump spent several hours a day in his first term glued to the television, mainly watching Fox News -- his favorite channel -- but also CNN, NBC and ABC news channels. His second term has been little changed, despite Trump leading an election campaign that deployed social media and podcasts. "Trump is a product of his generation," Kennedy said. "He's not sitting around looking at TikTok." The Republican, who hosted 14 seasons of "The Apprentice" television series, knows better than most how images can be weaponized for political point-scoring. He was gleeful after his shocking clash with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House in February, which saw the pair rowing in front of the world's press. "This is going to be great television," Trump said. And in May he gave a similar public dressing down to South African leader Cyril Ramaphosa when he sat in the Oval Office for what turned into a diplomatic ambush. Trump hijacked the meeting by playing a video montage -- one littered with inaccuracies -- that purported to prove claims of a "genocide" against white farmers in South Africa.

Lebanon wants army plan to disarm Hezbollah by end of year – DW – 08/06/2025

Lebanon's Cabinet has asked the army to develop a plan to bring all arms under state control by the end of the year. Lebanon's government has tasked the army with developing a plan in which only state institutions will have weapons by the end of the year. Such a move would effectively disarm Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Shiite political party and militant group in Lebanon. Tuesday's Cabinet decision follows heavy pressure from the United States to disarm the group. It comes as part of implementing a November 2024 ceasefire that sought to end more than a year of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, including two months of all-out war. Under the ceasefire, Lebanese government authorities, including the army and internal security services, should be the only armed forces in Lebanon. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the government "tasked the Lebanese army with setting an implementation plan to restrict weapons" to the army and other state forces "before the end of this year." The plan is to be presented to the Cabinet by the end of August for discussion and approval, Salam told a press conference after a marathon Cabinet session lasting nearly six hours. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Hezbollah is a political party and militant group based in Lebanon that is considered a terrorist organization by the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom and others. The group is the only faction that kept its weapons after Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, doing so in the name of "resistance" against Israel. It was long Lebanon's strongest military force — even more powerful than the army — thanks to funding, training and weapons from Iran. It was viewed as the most heavily armed nonstate actor in the world. But the war with Israel saw Hezbollah severely weakened, with its arsenal pummeled and many of its political and military leaders dead. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said on Tuesday that the group wouldn't disarm while Israeli attacks continue. "Any timetable presented for implementation under ... Israeli aggression cannot be agreed to," he said, speaking as the Cabinet meeting was underway. "The issue has become simply: give us weapons, but no national security. How is that possible? We do not accept it, because we consider ourselves a fundamental component of Lebanon," Qassem said. Hezbollah still retains significant support among Lebanon's Shiite Muslim community. But polling by the Arab Barometer, undertaken in early 2024, found that "despite Hezbollah's significant influence in Lebanon, relatively few Lebanese support it." The latest war between the two erupted in October 2023 when Hezbollah began firing rockets over the border at Israel after the Hamas-led massacres in Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel has continued to carry out strikes on Lebanon despite the November 2024 ceasefire. It says these are on Hezbollah's weapons depots and fighters, and accuses the group of trying to rebuild its military capabilities. Israel has threatened to keep up its strikes on Lebanon until the group is disarmed.

Pakistan: Hundreds of Imran Khan supporters arrested – DW – 08/05/2025

Thousands defied a protest ban in several Pakistani cities and clashed with police, as they called for the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. More than 240 supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan were arrested on Tuesday, as they rallied on the second anniversary of his detention. Security officials and police said at east 122 were detained trying to block roads and threatening law and order in the eastern city of Lahore, capital of Punjab province Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party (PTI) had sought to stage nationwide protests, calling for his release. Police fired tear gas to quell the crowds in the cities of Karachi and Muzaffarabad. "The party decided to hold peaceful protests across the country, to which the government responded by imposing a ban on gatherings, (and) blocking main highways," said Zulfikar Bukhari, PTI party spokesperson, who is based in London. Supporters outside a Lahore courthouse shouted "Free Imran Khan!" while smaller groups gathered protests across the city. Bukhari said over 200 activists were detained in Lahore alone. Khan urged supporters to "come out and hold peaceful protests until a true democracy is restored," according to a message attributed to Khan on his party's X account on Monday. The former cricket star turned prime minister of Pakistan was ousted in 2022 by a no-confidence vote. He has been detained since August 2023 and been charged in dozens of cases, ranging from corruption, terrorism and disclosure of official secrets. Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were both convicted of graft and were sentenced to 14 years and seven years in prison, respectively. An anti-terrorism court also convicted dozens of PTI party members, including MPs and the National Assembly's opposition leader, over nationwide protests in 2023. Khan has denied any wrongdoing, saying the charges against him are politically motivated.
