BBC News11 hours ago
Britain's Tom Aspinall will make the first defence of his undisputed heavyweight title against France's Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi on 25 October.Aspinall, 32, was upgraded to champion of the division last month when former title holder Jon Jones retired and vacated his belt.Aspinall spent 19 months as interim champion but an undisputed title showdown with Jones failed to materialise. The fight with 35-year-old Gane will come 15 months after Aspinall's last outing, where he defended his interim title against Curtis Blaydes. In a post confirming the contest with Gane on Instagram, Aspinall wrote "time to remind 'em".
Manchester's Aspinall repeatedly called for an undisputed title fight with Jones after winning the interim belt in November 2023, but the American remained non-committal.Jones instead defended his belt against fellow countryman Stipe Miocic in November, leaving Aspinall to wait for a potential bout, before retiring seven months later.Aspinall is Britain's first UFC heavyweight champion and has won eight of his nine fights in the promotion, with his wins all coming via finish.Gane is a former UFC interim heavyweight champion but has twice suffered defeat fighting for the undisputed title - against Francis Ngannou in 2022, and against Jones the following year.He last fought against Russia's Alexander Volkov in December, winning by split decision in an unconvincing performance.Since making his UFC debut in 2019, Gane has won 10 of his 12 bouts.

Fans furious over potential deal that would see ESPN take control of NFL Network

ESPN and the NFL are reportedly 'inside the five-yard line' in negotiations over a deal that could leave football fans furious. The two parties are said to be inching closer to an agreement that would see the network acquire a significant portion of NFL media, including the RedZone Channel, according to The Athletic. In addition to RedZone, which simultaneously broadcasts all the best action from across the league's Sunday slates, ESPN is reportedly also in line to acquire the NFL Network and seven regular-season games that currently air on the league-owned network. It's currently unclear how much the blockbuster deal could cost the network but it is believed an agreement could be imminent. Talks have reached such a stage that the league has informed team owners that they may need to vote as early as next month, the report added. However, NFL fans seemingly hope negotiations will crumble before a vote takes place as they were left seething over the bombshell news Wednesday. Many on social media claimed that RedZone's quality would tank under the stewardship of ESPN. 'I think it'll be a lesser product. Redzone and NFL network are better as their distinct selves. The product doesn't need ESPN's spin on it. Look what they did with the UFC,' one user shared on X. 'ESPN gonna find a way to make it worse aren't they,' another claimed, while a third added: 'This will go downhill so much if it moves to ESPN.' 'ESPN just buys products and ruins them. No way it's actually better and most likely will get way worse. And probably will have tons of commercials,' weighed in a fourth. 'I don't see this being a positive thing for the fans…,' posted another, with one user asking: 'Can ESPN just go away already?' For years, RedZone was known for its 'seven hours of commercial-free football' but the fear of increased advertisements following an ESPN takeover seemed to be a point of contention for a lot of fans. 'Get ready for advertisements 24 hours a day,' one dejected fan posted, while another sarcastically added: 'So much for commercial free football.' In May, Scott Hanson announced that he would be returning as host of the show for a 17th season this fall. Fans were left furious as the bombshell report broke with many slamming the network Hanson's status as host of RedZone, and the show's airing as a whole, came into question as speculation ramped up about his NFL contract. Earlier this year, there had been reports that walks between the host and the network had stalled with his former contact expiring at the end of the 2024 season. But the veteran host confirmed his return in a social media statement earlier this year. '100 days from now = NFL RedZone. (& for those wondering: Yes, I *will* be there. We have A LOT of Touchdowns to watch together!) #NFLRedZone,' Hanson said.

French skiing federation suspends Olympic medalist Joël Chenal amid sexual harassment allegations

The French skiing federation has provisionally suspended Joël Chenal, an Olympic silver medalist and a former national coach, amid accusations of sexual harassment against minors. The federation's move on Wednesday came after French newspaper Le Monde spoke with 12 women over alleged incidents between 2005 and 2021 when they were minors. Chenal, a silver medalist in giant slalom at the 2006 Turin Olympics, was among the France national team coaches from 2013-17. 'Following the publication today of a new press article providing new information, including the identity of witnesses, and following the initial testimonies gathered by its ethics committee, the president of the federation has decided to open disciplinary proceedings with the immediate provisional suspension of Joel Chenal,' the federation said in a statement. Le Monde reported that Chenal is the subject of a complaint for sexual assault. The federation said it will join the legal case. 'This demonstrates its commitment to supporting victims, cooperating fully with the judicial authorities and shedding light on these unacceptable events,' the federation said. Le Monde has said previously that Chenal denies the accusations. ___

France hit out at abuse following Euros defeat

The French Football Federation (FFF) has called for an investigation into hateful online comments following the national team's exit from the Women's Euros. The FFF condemned the abuse, stating that "Nothing can justify such manifestations of hatred," and expressed full support for the players. To combat the issue, the federation has contacted the National Center Against Online Hatred to allow for an investigation into criminal behaviour. This decisive action comes shortly after England defender Jess Carter withdrew from social media due to racial abuse, highlighting a growing concern. France goalkeeper Pauline Peyeaud-Magnin also spoke out against the abuse, emphasising that hatred should never have a place in sport and calling for kindness.
