USA Today6 hours ago
Following a 21-win season in 2024, the Texas A&M volleyball program earned multiple preseason Southeastern Conference honors heading into a new campaign under head coach Jamie Morrison.
The Aggies enter this season ranked third in the Southeastern Conference coaches' poll, with two members of this year's roster also named to the 2025 Preseason All-SEC Team. Logan Lednicky and Ifenna Cos-Okpalla added another honor to their list of accomplishments, as both were announced to the league's list on Tuesday afternoon.
This marks Lednicky's third consecutive preseason award and Cos-Okpalla's second consecutive season securing the honors, given to just 15 athletes across the SEC before the new season begins.
Lednicky recorded the second-highest kills per set total (4.47) and third-highest kill total (492) in a single season in the program's history last season in an impressive junior year showing. At the same time, Cos-Okpalla led the team with 161 blocks and averaged 1.46 blocks per set, which ranked second and third.
The SEC's preseason voting placed the Aggies in third with 195 points and one first-place vote among the 16 teams in the conference. Following Texas A&M's record-breaking 2024 campaign, which featured the program's highest win total since 2019, 11 players return to Morrison's squad this season. On the recruiting trail, the Aggies also brought in the No. 7 recruiting class in the country.
Here are the finalized votes from the league's preseason coaches' poll:
Following a NCAA Tournament run that ended with the Aggies reaching the team's first Sweet 16 since 2019, Morrison will look to lead his program back to the promised land this season. With a roster loaded with talent and experience, the program in College Station could be at the apex of the SEC in 2025.

Grand Canyon University's move to the Mountain West has been accelerated. Lopes to compete this fall

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Grand Canyon University announced Tuesday its move to the Mountain West Conference will begin immediately. The school in Phoenix was initially scheduled to transition from the Western Athletic Conference to its new league on July 1, 2026. The Mountain West offered an earlier transition, however, allowing the school to compete for conference championships this fall. 'The addition of Grand Canyon for the 2025-26 academic year is a significant win for the student-athletes at GCU and in the Mountain West,' conference commissioner Gloria Nevarez said in a statement. Grand Canyon will be one of 14 schools competing in the conference next season. The accelerated transition comes after five Mountain West schools announced they intend to depart the conference and join the Pac-12 in 2026. Those schools are Utah State, Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Colorado State. 'Grand Canyon brings elite recruiting, a passionate fanbase, and state-of-the-art facilities, elevating the Mountain West's competitiveness and national profile,' Nevarez said. 'In a time when the student-athlete experience is of utmost importance, we felt it was in the best interest to allow them to compete for conference championships and the NCAA postseason immediately.' Seventeen varsity teams will compete in the Mountain West, including men's and women's basketball which have been in the national spotlight in recent years during the NCAA Tournament. Grand Canyon's historically successful men's volleyball team was cut in April. 'GCU is excited for this opportunity for our student-athletes, the Havocs and our fanbase,' GCU athletic director Jamie Boggs said. 'After winning 76 conference championships, this opportunity best positions GCU to be nationally competitive, and we are excited about the vision and future of the Mountain West.'

Oklahoma Sooners make top 3 for elite defensive end Jake Kreul

The Oklahoma Sooners remain in the mix for one of the best defensive ends in the 2026 recruiting class as Jake Kreul narrowed his recruitment to three schools on Tuesday night. Kreul, a five-star prospect according to ESPN, is down to the Oklahoma Sooners, Ole Miss Rebels, and the Texas Longhorns. He has offers from 36 Power Four schools and has the chance to finish the cycle as a consensus five-star prospect. Based on a prediction from On3/Rivals national recruiting director Steve Wiltfong back on June 24, the Sooners appear to be the favorites to land a commitment from Kreul. Cody Carpentier, who covers Texas recruiting for Rivals, also predicted Oklahoma to be the landing spot back in June. The Sooners and defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis has done a great job in OU's recruitment of Kreul, putting them in a great spot to land the elite defensive end prospect. Now that it appears they just have Ole Miss and Texas to contend with, all the Sooners need to do is close out the recruitment with a commitment and get him signed during the early signing period.
