
What is 'Gas Station Heroin'? FDA warns of surge in unregulated use among youth, linked to seizures, breathing problems and more
According to an Associated Press report, health officials have warned against the usage of the products that are usually marketed as energy shots or cognitive supplements and are often sold at gas stations, convenience stores and smoke shops under names like Zaza, Tianaa, Pegasus and TD Red.
The substance contains tianeptine, which is an unapproved drug in the US but is still sometimes found in over-the-counter supplements at stores mentioned above.
What is 'gas station heroin'?
According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), tianeptine is not approved, but it is used in some countries as an antidepressant.
While US poison control centres have reported a steady surge in calls linked to the drug for over a decade. Moreover, last month, the FDA issued a warning to health professionals about 'the magnitude of the underlying danger of these products'.
As per experts, 'gas station heroin' mimics opioid-like effects by binding to similar brain receptors, despite not being classified as an opioid. On the other hand, the previous month, the FDA issued a formal warning, calling tianeptine a 'dangerous and growing health trend'.
It also urged swift action to be taken to prevent a potential opioid-like crisis. Mostly, there is a sharp rise in the use of substances among young users.
What is the use of this product, and risk factors?
According to AP, many tianeptine products claim that the drug is helpful for users to treat medical conditions, including addiction, pain, and depression.
In 2018, the FDA issued another warning calling out the maker of the product called Tianna that claimed to offer an unparalleled solution to cravings for opiates.

"It's kind of this grey area of consumer products or supplements where the contents are not regulated or tested the way they would be with a medication," quoted Dr Diane Calello of the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System in the report. Tianeptine is linked to serious health problems, including physiological risks of opioids and dangerously depressed breathing.
Dangerous symptoms to look out for
According to the report, over half of the 20 recent cases of using this drug have required intensive care admission. Symptoms of using this drug include seizures, low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat and severe distress.

Substandard edible oil found in Nandurbar: Minister warns of action
Several edible oil samples collected in Nandurbar district have failed to meet food safety standards, and action will be taken against the guilty, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Minister Narhari Zirwal informed the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during Question Hour on Monday. The matter was raised by MLA Aamshya Padvi, with follow-up questions from members Sameer Kunawar and Hiraman Khoskar. Responding to the question in the Lower House, Minister Zirwal said that on March 10, the FDA inspected the Gopal Provision Store in Akkalkuwa. During the inspection, samples of Mahika brand refined soybean oil and Kamla brand groundnut oil were collected for testing. Preliminary reports indicated that the samples were substandard as per food safety norms. Following an appeal by the vendor, the samples were sent for further analysis to the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru. Zirwal added that in the financial year 2024–25, 12 edible oil samples were tested in the district, of which five were found to be of inferior quality. 'Out of these, legal action has been initiated in two cases under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The remaining three are awaiting final reports from referral laboratories,' the minister said. Zirwal told the House that strict measures will be taken against those found violating food safety norms.

Kanwar Yatra route food vendors now need QR licences, says UP government
In a big step to ensure the safety and health of devotees during this year's Kanwar Yatra, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced strict new measures focused on food safety and transparency. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided that shops on the Kanwar route must now display only the shop's name instead of the shopkeeper's make identification easier, a QR code system is being introduced. Each shop will get a QR code that contains complete details like the shop's name, licence number, address, phone number and email ID. Devotees can simply scan the code to get all this information instantly. FSDA has officially issued a form to collect and display these say the FSDA Act does not have a rule that requires displaying the shopkeeper's name, and earlier, it was often difficult to identify shop owners in case of food safety complaints. This new move is aimed at fixing accountability and making it easier to take quick action when the QR code, devotees will also be able to lodge complaints of food adulteration using an app. As soon as a complaint is registered, a food inspector from the control room will visit the spot. If the inspector finds anything wrong in the initial check, the unsafe food will be destroyed department is also planning awareness drives to educate shopkeepers and devotees about food safety.
