Govt Begins Testing New Mobile Alert System For Real-Time Disaster Warnings
This new system, known as the Cell Broadcast (CB) system, is designed to send alerts instantly to mobile phones in areas affected by natural disasters or emergencies like tsunamis, earthquakes, lightning, gas leaks, or chemical hazards.
Unlike regular SMS alerts, which are sent individually, Cell Broadcast messages are sent to all mobile phones in a particular area at once, making them faster and more effective in critical situations.
The CB system is being developed and implemented by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a leading R&D organisation under the Department of Telecom. The system is currently undergoing nationwide testing, which will last for about two to four weeks.
During this time, people may receive test messages on their mobile phones in English and Hindi. These messages will clearly state that they are part of a test and do not require any action from the public.
Only mobile phones with Cell Broadcast test channels enabled will receive these test messages. Also, some people might get the same message more than once, as the system is being tested across the entire mobile network, including all base stations and towers.
The NDMA already runs an SMS-based alert system called 'SACHET,' which has been operational in all 36 states and Union Territories.
Built using the Common Alerting Protocol recommended by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), this system has already sent over 6,899 crore SMS alerts in more than 19 Indian languages during past disasters and extreme weather events.
Once the testing of the Cell Broadcast system is complete, it will be used alongside SMS alerts to deliver warnings in real time and in multiple Indian languages to all mobile users -- even if their phones do not have the test channels activated.
The government has asked the public to cooperate during the testing phase and to ignore any test messages received. These messages are only meant to check the system's performance and do not indicate any actual emergency.

The phrase drew immediate condemnation from India's Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who said "officers are not Tom, Dick, or Harry ... they are statutory functionaries". "No social media intermediary can expect completely unregulated functioning," Mehta said. India's IT ministry and X did not respond to Reuters queries. In 2021, X, formerly called Twitter, was locked in a stand-off with the Indian government over non-compliance with legal orders to block certain tweets. It later complied, but is still locked in a court fight related to the move.

The Rs 548 crore spent on the mission is a fraction of what India would have otherwise needed to spend on replicating the same training, exposure and systems-level experience, Isro chairman V Narayanan told TOI, in his first exclusive interview about the multinational commercial mission. Speaking from Houston, Narayanan said that the learning outcomes — spanning astronaut training (for two astronauts), mission operations, and hardware-software-human interface — cannot be measured purely in monetary terms. 'For a country of 140 crore people, what we've spent is only marginal,,' Narayanan said. For that, he said: 'We've gained access to infrastructure and experience that would otherwise require thousands of crores.' If one looks at the per capita cost on the Indian population, it adds up to around Rs 4 per head. Training, confidence, exposure, systems understanding — these are foundational,' he said. He added that maturity in public discourse is essential. 'People must recognise that not all benefits can be quantified. But they can certainly be measured in preparedness and capability,' he said. Japanese electronics maker Sharp made its comeback in the Indian market with a range of new air conditioners earlier this year. I have been using the Sharp 1.5 Ton inverter AC (Seiryo AH-SI9V3B) for the last month or so, and here's my detailed take on how it performed in the hot Delhi summers and whether it's worth your money. Installation The installation process for the Sharp AC was relatively smooth. Just a day after receiving the product, I got a call from a Sharp technician, and the installation was completed the very next day. In case you're wondering, the AC comes with 20ft of copper pipe, which should be more than enough for most people, and the rest of the material needed for installation is included in the box. All you need to buy separately are the metal holders for the outdoor unit and a drainage pipe, along with some screws to hold everything in place—pretty standard stuff. Design The Sharp AC indoor unit looks almost inconspicuous and settles easily into most rooms thanks to its white colour and lack of flashy branding. If you're looking for a product that makes a statement with colour options or design, this isn't it. There's a Sharp branding in the middle, a display on the right, and electric readings on the far right. Some warranty stickers (easily removable) sit on the left, and a grey horizontal line with slight model branding runs along the bottom. The outdoor unit is devoid of any plastic, feels sturdy, and looks like what you'd expect from most ACs—and that isn't a bad thing in my book. The Sharp AC, however, left me pleasantly surprised as it not only managed to cool down my room within minutes, even during peak heat, but also provided consistent coverage throughout the space. The AC operates very quietly, so if you're planning to shoot a video or record audio, there shouldn't be much noise coming from the unit. It comes with 5-in-1 convertible technology, adjustable using the provided remote, allowing you to change cooling capacity from 40% to 110% based on your room's needs. There's also a 7-stage filtration system, including a dust filter, PM 0.3 filter, and anti-bacterial filter, among others. While I didn't have the equipment to test whether it reduced air pollution, the unit did seem to reduce dust slightly, making the air feel cleaner. One thing to note is that the included remote isn't of the best quality. While it has all the standard options, there is no support for Wi-Fi or smart home apps like Alexa or Google Home. Sharp AC remote At a price of ₹38,500, the Sharp 1.5 Ton Seiryo AH-SI9V3B AC presents a compelling option for anyone looking for a new air conditioner to beat the heat. While it lacks smart home connectivity and its long-term customer service experience remains to be seen, the affordable pricing, quiet performance, and features like 5-in-1 convertible technology and additional filters make it a standout option for sub- ₹40,000 buyers.
