Ouaddou aims to mould teen defender Mbokazi into a leader at Pirates

TimesLIVE12 hours ago
Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says Mbekezeli 'TLB' Mbokazi is one of the 'big men' of his team, hence the 19-year-old defensive prodigy was the only player fielded for 90 minutes, captaining the side for part of the game, against Cypriot champions Pafos.
The teen wearing the armband as Bucs drew 1-1 in their friendly on Sunday at Marbella Football Centre as part of their preseason camp in Spain signified his future leadership prospects for the Soweto giants, new coach Ouaddou said.
'Mbokazi is one of the big men of this team. He's a South African, he's proud of what he's doing and we're proud of him. He had a good game,' Ouaddou said after the game.
'It's normal we give him the captaincy. Step by step, we want to give him more time because he's going to be one of the main men this season and that's why we gave him that responsibility.

Orlando Pirates: Mohau Nkota's message to Riveiro

Former Orlando Pirates winger Mohau Nkota has praised his former coach, Jose Riveiro, as well as his development coach, Joseph Makhanya. The 20-year-old attacker joined Saudi Pro League side Ettifaq Club after just one season with the Buccaneers. He scored five goals and provided seven assists in 39 matches across all competitions. On Monday, Nkota penned a heartfelt message on his social media platform. 'I'm filled with mixed emotions. There's sadness in leaving behind the only football home I've ever known, but also excitement for the journey that lies ahead. I've grown as a player, but even more importantly, I've grown as a person,' the former Orlando Pirates winger wrote. 'I'm proud and honoured to have won my first major cup with Orlando Pirates. The memories we've created and the friendships formed here will last a lifetime. 'To the fans – thank you for your unwavering support. Your cheers, your chants, your passion, and even your constructive criticism – all of it fueled me every single step of the way. I never forget the electric atmosphere you created on match days. It was a privilege to play for you. Nkota also took time to thank Makhanya, with whom he worked in development. The winger made his debut for Orlando Pirates first team late in 2024 and immediately became a fan favourite under Jose Riveiro. 'To coach Joseph Makhanya, you have been more than just a coach-you have been a true father figure. Your guidance has shaped me not only as a player but as a man and to the man who made me the person I am today-Coach Jose Riveiro thank you. Your influence on my journey has been immeasurable, and I will carry your lessons with me wherever I go,' Nkota wrote. With Nkota gone, Pirates announced the signing of a new winger. 'Versatile midfielder, can sit deep, play further forward and wide right, even striker a few times, although more in a 'false 9' role,' he said. Timeline report: New Kaizer Chiefs kit unveiling 'I like to cut in from the left onto my right foot, but if I had to define my best position, it would be a 'number 10'. 'I appreciate creativity, but the bottom line is you have to score goals to win games. I'd like to think I can rise to the occasion when called upon to make a decisive contribution for my team, and that's what motivates me. 'It will probably be surreal. It's something I'll look back on. Sometimes when you're in the moment you don't take everything in but afterwards it will fully sink in,' added the new Glamour Boy.
