United sign 'transformative' Dutch defender Esselink

Dundee United have signed Bert Esselink after 25-year-old centre-half left Stal Mielec following their relegation from the Polish top flight. United manager Jim Goodwin expects the Dutchman, who has signed a a two-year contract with a club-held option to extend for a further 12 months, to have a "transformative impact" on his defence. Advertisement "His mobility and bravery allows him to engage with the opposition higher up the pitch and the statistical data reinforces his intelligence when selecting a progressive passing option," Goodwin told United's website. "Bert is also comfortable defending in a deeper block, using his awareness to remain compact and defend the box both on the ground and in the air." Esselink came through De Graafschap's academy in his homeland before making his senior debut for Cypriot club PAEEK, helping the Nicosia-based club secure promotion to the top tier for the first time. His release clause was triggered by APOEL Nicosia, but he moved to Olympiakos Nicosia in search of first-team football. Advertisement Esselink moved to Poland in 2023 and Unied say that during his two seasons with Stal he ranked among "the division's most successful duel combatants, possession winners and forward-pass completionists". However, playing 28 times last season, 22 of them starts, he could not prevent his side dropping to the second tier after finishing 16th of 18 teams in the Ekstraklasa. "Bert's arrival will have a transformative impact on our ability to regain possession in key areas and play on the front foot," Goodwin added.

Kaizer Chiefs chase international triple threat for Naturena switch

Kaizer Chiefs have intensified their international recruitment drive following the recent arrivals of Ethan Chislett and Flavio Silva, turning their attention to three more overseas-based South African stars, Thibang Phete, Luther Singh, and Nkanyiso Shinga. After nearly ten months on the sidelines, Thibang Phete returned to professional football in March by joining Icelandic top-flight side IF Vestri. The 30-year-old, affectionately known as Cafu, previously played for GD Chaves in Portugal during the 2023/24 campaign but left the club after his one-year contract expired. Now a free agent, Phete presents an enticing option for Chiefs as they seek to bolster their defensive depth with international experience. Luther Singh has emerged as one of South Africa's top-performing exports, racking up 13 assists for AEL Limassol in the Cypriot top division last season. His red-hot form continues to catch the attention of national team coach Hugo Broos, keeping him in contention for a Bafana Bafana recall. The Chiefs long time target remains under contract with AEL Limassol until May 2026, with an additional one-year extension clause in place, making any potential move to Naturena a complex negotiation. Meanwhile, Nkanyiso Shinga has impressed with 22 appearances for Liga Portugal 2 outfit Alverca, where his contract runs out at the end of June. Chiefs may see an opportunity to swoop in and secure left back before other clubs enter the race. A source revealed the situation: 'So these three (Phete, Singh and Shinga) are all involved in negotiations with Chiefs, but Singh and Shinga will need the most convincing. Shinga has a year left on his contract and Singh is doing well in Cyprus, with a lengthy contract attached to him.' Will the overseas trio be a good fit at Kaizer Chiefs? Connor Goldson has Rangers fans in stitches as he goes full Joey Barton with surprise accent

The defender is now with Aris Limassol and raised eyebrows with his latest interview It is now approaching 12 months since Connor Goldson left Rangers - and it appears he has already picked up a Cypriot accent following the transfer. The centre-back spent six years at Ibrox and was a key member of Rangers' title-winning squad in 2021 and a pivotal figure in the team that reached a Europa League Final in Seville. ‌ But last summer the experience 32-year-old defender made the move Aris Limassol - and has quickly embedded himself in the culture on the other side of the Mediterranean. ‌ Speaking to Cypriot media, Goldson was asked about his time in Glasgow as well as in the English Premier League - and his ability to stay motivated with Aris. The English defender appeared to have adopted a new accent, responding: "Ambition. I love football. "Apart from my family, it's the one thing that I care about. I want to make my career as long as possible. "If I can play until 38, 39 this what I will do. I work everyday for this, I try to keep my body as strong and as fit as possible. "I want to try and stay at as high a level as I can for as long as possible. You know how football is, one year can be good and the next you can be forgotten quickly. "I work before training, after training to keep my body healthy and try to prolong my career. I know that one it's over you don't get a chance again." ‌ Rangers fans were quick to latch on to the interview - comparing it to Joey Barton's infamous press conference where he adopted a bizarre French accent during his time at Marseille. One punter said on X: "Joey Barton eat your heart out. The big man is picking up the accent." Another added: "He's only been gone a year where has that come from?" ‌ A sympathetic Ibrox diehard added: "Deserves to enjoy himself over there, even with that accent." Patriarch of Alexandria held official meeting with the President of the Republic of Cyprus

SEE News An official and cordial meeting took place today, June 24, at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia between Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. During the meeting, the Patriarch informed the President about the wide-ranging, multifaceted, and multi-level missionary work of the Patriarchate across the African continent – spiritual, philanthropic, medical, and educational – which stands as a beacon of love, hope, and human dignity for the suffering peoples of Africa. The Patriarch expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Cyprus for its steadfast and valuable support of the Patriarchate's missionary efforts, and especially to the President himself, for his personal sensitivity and tangible love for Orthodox missions. As part of efforts to strengthen cooperation, it was decided that a medical team from the Office of the President of Cyprus, in coordination with the Patriarchate of Alexandria, will be dispatched to support the Patriarchate's charitable and medical initiatives in various parts of Africa, where healthcare needs are urgent and significant. The Patriarch officially invited the President to attend the upcoming inauguration of the Grand Center currently under construction in Egypt's New Administrative Capital, on land generously granted by the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The Center will be named the 'Friendship Center of the Peoples of Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt', serving as a living symbol of unity, peace, and intercultural cooperation among the three nations. During the meeting, the Patriarch also reaffirmed the unwavering stance of the Patriarchate of Alexandria in support of a peaceful and just resolution to the Cyprus issue. He expressed his sincere hope that a fair and sustainable solution will be found as soon as possible – one that respects human rights and international law, and ensures the unity and security of the Cypriot people. At the same time, the Patriarch did not hide his deep concern about the escalating tensions in the Middle East, emphatically stressing that peace is the only realistic and God-given path to resolving every conflict and misunderstanding among nations. He offered fervent prayers for reconciliation and peaceful coexistence among the peoples of the region. On behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, who has maintained a longstanding friendship with the Patriarch since his tenure at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, deep respect and gratitude were expressed for the Patriarchate's invaluable contribution in Africa and globally. The President reiterated the Republic of Cyprus's steadfast support for the work of the Patriarchate and praised the role of Orthodox missions in promoting humanitarianism, solidarity, and global peace. The Patriarch was accompanied on his official visit by Bishop Nikodimos of Nitria, Exarch of the Patriarchate of Alexandria in Cyprus, and Archimandrite Athinodoros Papaevrypiadis. The meeting was sealed in a spirit of mutual respect and fraternal cooperation, reflecting the deep and enduring relationship of trust between the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the Republic of Cyprus. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean
