Ahly go top Egyptian league after 4-2 win over Masry - Egyptian Football

Al-Ahram Weekly08-05-2025

Ahly climbed to the top of the Egyptian Premier League with a 4-2 victory over Masry at Alexandria's Borg El-Arab Stadium on Thursday, with three matches remaining in the season.
The win took Ahly to 49 points, two ahead of title rivals Pyramids FC, who will have a chance to reclaim top spot when they face NBE Club on Friday.
Masry took an early lead in the sixth minute when forward Salah Mohsen headed in a cross from Karim El-Eraki.
Despite dominating possession, Ahly initially struggled to break down Masry's defence and failed to test goalkeeper Mahmoud Gad.
Ahly eventually equalized in the 35th minute when Emam Ashour slotted home from a Wessam Abou Ali pass.
Two minutes later, Abou Ali thought he had given Ahly the lead, but his effort was disallowed following a VAR review.
The Red Devils went ahead five minutes before halftime after Gad fumbled an Achraf Bencharki cross, allowing Taher Mohamed to tap in from close range.
Ahly extended their lead early in the second half when Gad misjudged a free kick, moving the wrong way as Abou Ali's effort found the net in the other direction.
After winning the spot-kick, Ashour added his second goal of the night from the penalty spot in the 79th minute.
It marked his 11th league goal of the season, putting him atop the league's scoring chart.
Masry grabbed a late consolation through substitute Fakhreddine Ben Youssef, who scored with a well-placed header.
Ahly next face Ceramica Cleopatra on Tuesday.

Tennis: Sabalenka hoping to learn lessons from French Open outburst - Omni sports

World number one Aryna Sabalenka is hoping an outburst after her French Open final defeat to Coco Gauff will prove a turning point in maintaining her emotional control in the biggest matches. The three-time Grand Slam champion threw away a one-set lead to lose to the American in Paris earlier this month. Afterwards, Sabalenka described her performance as the "the worst final I've ever played". The Belarusian later apologised to Gauff for her comments and the pair put their differences aside by performing a dance together on the Wimbledon lawns for social media. "I was just completely, like, upset with myself, and emotions got over me. I just completely lost it," said Sabalenka at a pre-Wimbledon press conference on Saturday. "I believe I get overemotional at the last stages of the tournaments because I have this desire of winning. "Sometimes it (gets the better of) me and I can lose control over my emotions. So I would love to improve that at the last stages of the tournament. "But honestly I'm kind of glad what happened to me at Paris because I was able to learn a lot. I was able to sit back and being open to myself, not just to ignore some things. I think I realised a lot of things about myself in those last stages of the tournaments." Sabalenka's comments after the French Open were fiercely criticised in the United States for taking the shine off Gauff's second Grand Slam title. "Of course, she got my respect. She knows it," added Sabalenka. "I'm happy that she was, like, 'yeah, it's all good, don't worry'. As you saw the (dancing) video, I was talking, we are good, we are friends. I hope the US media can be easy on me right now." Sabalenka has never gone beyond the semi-finals on the Wimbledon grass and begins her quest for glory against Canadian qualifier Carson Branstine, a player she admitted to having limited knowledge of. "The other day I opened social media, and she was giving (an) interview. I think she just qualified. I was like, 'Oh my God, this girl is so beautiful!' "Then I opened the draw, and I see I'm playing the Canadian girl. I open her profile, and I'm like, 'Oh, this is the beautiful girl'. That's all I know so far." Monaco close in on Fati loan signing from Barcelona - World

Barcelona forward Ansu Fati is expected to join French club Monaco on loan with an option to buy, sources close to the deal said Friday. The 22-year-old Spanish international passed his medical on Friday as Monaco and Barcelona agreed to a season-long loan deal with an 11-million-euro fee ($12.9 million) to make the move permanent. According to the same source, the contract will not be made official until July 1. Fati burst onto the scene at Barcelona aged 17, but has since failed to live up to initial high expectations. He made 11 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga champions last term, without finding the net. Fati spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Premier League club Brighton, where he scored four goals in 27 outings. With his expected arrival, Fati should become Monaco's third signing of the summer. Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is slated to sign for the Ligue 1 side, following on from England international Eric Dier. Pogba was also undergoing a medical with the principality side on Friday. The 32-year-old 2018 World Cup winner is seeking a club after having his contract terminated by Juventus in March while serving an 18-month suspension for doping. The trio should be officially announced to the press on July 3. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.) Olivier Giroud to leave MLS side LAFC - World

Olivier Giroud, France's all-time top goalscorer, and Los Angeles FC have mutually agreed to part ways, the MLS club announced on Friday. The 38-year-old striker, who joined LAFC in May 2024 from AC Milan, will play his last match for the team on Sunday against Vancouver. "Olivier has been an exemplary professional during his time at LAFC," team co-president and general manager John Thorrington said. "He brought humility and a winning mentality that helped elevate everyone around him." Giroud has been heavily linked with a move to Ligue 1 club Lille, according to several media reports in France. Giroud helped LAFC reach the 2024 Leagues Cup final, where he scored his first goal for the club. He also scored in the 2024 US Open Cup final, helping LAFC win the trophy for the first time. "I want to thank all of the fans, my teammates and the staff at LAFC for making this an enjoyable stop in my career," Giroud said. "I am happy to have played a part in the success of LAFC." Giroud has scored nearly 300 goals in more than 700 club matches, winning major trophies at Montpellier, Arsenal, Chelsea and AC Milan. The 2018 World Cup winner leads France's all-time scoring charts with 57 goals.
