No major incidents during Vancouver fireworks festival, police say
The fireworks festival concluded with an explosive performance from Team Nova Scotia on Saturday. The usually international competition was an all-Canadian affair this year, with Team Quebec lighting up the sky last Wednesday and Team Yukon the previous weekend.
'Logistically, this is very challenging series of events of us, due to the volume of people on land, the number of vessels in the water, the expansive road closures, and the number of extra officers we need to deploy,' Sgt. Steve Addison of the Vancouver Police Department told CTV News in a statement.
'This has all taken on extra significance following the Lapu Lapu attack.'
Security was front of mind for festival organizers in the wake of the deadly SUV ramming that shocked the city in April.
Steel barriers went up to block cars from entering the most crowded areas, and an additional 400 police officers were on the streets on fireworks nights.
'We've been doing heavy vehicle barriers and other mitigation measures for many years,' Paul Runnals, the event's executive producer, told CTV News earlier this month. 'It's not new to us. We're enhancing it this year based on the learnings from April, but really it's an extension of what we've been doing for a long time.'
Police did have to deal with the usual fare of children getting separated from their parents, drunk people and 'physical confrontations' during the event, Addison said.
'By and large, it was a safe and successful three nights with no major public safety incidents at the waterfront.'
The winner of the competition will be revealed on Tuesday.

Four arrested following ‘dangerous incidents involving stolen vehicles' in Moncton area
Three teens and a 20-year-old man have been arrested following 'dangerous incidents involving stolen vehicles' in the Moncton area. RCMP officers responded to a report late Tuesday afternoon that two vehicles located in a Salisbury business parking lot may have been stolen. 'As police approached with their emergency equipment activated, both vehicles fled at a high rate of speed towards the Homestead Road. Shortly after, one of the vehicles was disabled on Route 126,' said Cpl. Marc Belliveau, in a news release from the New Brunswick RCMP. Police say the driver, a 20-year-old Moncton man, and the passenger, a 16-year-old girl from Riverside-Albert, were arrested. The second vehicle continued fleeing but was intercepted on Catamount Road in Indian Mountain, according to the RCMP. The driver, a 17-year-old boy from Moncton, and the passenger, a 17-year-old girl from Moncton, were arrested. The 16-year-old girl from Riverside-Albert was released and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. The two Moncton teens and the 20-year-old man all appeared in Moncton provincial court Wednesday. Nathaniel Beatty-Gratto, 20, was charged with: possession of property obtained by crime dangerous operation of a motor vehicle flight from a peace officer resisting a peace officer failure to comply with a probation order He was released from custody and is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 5. The 17-year-old boy was charged with: possession of property obtained by crime dangerous operation of a motor vehicle flight from police possession of weapons contrary to order failure to comply with conditions of a previous release order He was released from custody and is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 6. The 17-year-old girl was charged with: possession of property obtained by crime theft of a vehicle resisting a peace officer failure to comply with conditions of previous release orders She was released from custody and will return to court on Aug. 1. Speed and alcohol factors in fatal motorcycle crash, Abbotsford police say

A motorcyclist died after colliding with a Jeep in Abbotsford early Thursday, and police say both speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash. In a news release, the Abbotsford Police Department said officers were called to the northbound lanes of Highway 11 near Townshipline Road just after 1:30 a.m. 'Upon arrival, emergency personnel located a heavily damaged Kawasaki motorcycle and a Jeep Compass,' police said. 'Despite the efforts of first responders, the motorcyclist succumbed to their injuries at the scene.' The Jeep driver, meanwhile, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. The department did not specify whether speeding and intoxication was suspected on the part of the Jeep driver or the motorcyclist. Highway 11 northbound between Old Clayburn and Harris roads was shut down for the investigation and police anticipated the area to reopen at 9 a.m. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash camera video is asked to call the APD at 604-859-5225.
