Exclusive: Jai Vats on his role as Madhav Roy in Bade Ghar Ki Chhoti Bahu; says ‘I was instantly intrigued by the layered complexity of his character'
Actor Jai Vats is garnering attention for his nuanced portrayal of Madhav Roy in the new family drama Bade Ghar Ki Chhoti Bahu. In an exclusive conversation with Times of India TV, Jai opened up about his experience of playing a character that isn't a typical hero or villain, but someone caught in life's complexities. Talking about his first reaction to the role, Jai shared, 'When I first read Madhav's character sketch, I was instantly intrigued by the layered complexity of his character. He isn't your typical black-or-white antagonist; he is very much a regular family man, shaped by his circumstances, his insecurities, and a deep sense of familial dynamics. What intrigued me was how relatable his shades of grey are—because we all have moments of vulnerability where our decisions aren't ideal. As an actor, exploring those layers was very exciting.' Madhav Roy, cousin to the lead protagonist Ahaana Roy, brings underlying tension to the family dynamic. On portraying that subtle antagonism, Jai explained, 'The key was to ground Madhav's antagonism in emotion rather than intent. In real families, conflicts often arise not out of pure malice, but from contradicting priorities, circumstances beyond one's control, misunderstandings, or a feeling of being sidelined. I try to bring out that emotional undercurrent—making sure Madhav's actions feel like they're coming from a place of entitlement, rather than making him a villain in the stereotypical sense. That, I believe, subtlety keeps the tension real and relatable.' When asked whether Madhav is misunderstood or harbours a hidden agenda, Jai offered his personal interpretation. 'I see Madhav as a man who feels he has been overburdened with responsibility, being the primary breadwinner of the family, and often underappreciated within the family. That somehow results in not only resentment, but also a craving for validation, especially from his parents and wife. He's not entirely righteous — he does make questionable choices — but I believe his actions stem from his situation (emotional as well as financial) rather than calculated malice. As the story unfolds, the audience might even empathize with why he is the way he is.' Reflecting on how Madhav compares to his previous roles in Jai Jai Jai Bajrang Bali and Choti Sardarni, Jai added, 'See, you learn from each new part, but Madhav has been particularly challenging because he operates in the grey zone. In mythological or larger-than-life roles, the moral compass is more or less clearly carved out, you know when you're right or wrong. With Madhav, I had to find his truth in moments where he's neither a hero nor villain. That internal conflict made the performance more nuanced and, honestly, not just challenging but more fulfilling as an actor.'
