Menczer condemns ‘attack' by Ukrainian journalist on government's Vote 2025 survey

Budapest Times01-07-2025
Tamás Menczer, Fidesz communications director, has condemned an 'attack' by a Ukrainian journalist on the Hungarian government's Vote 2025 public survey on Ukraine's accession to the European Union.
In a post on Facebook, Menczer said Serhiy Sydorenko, '[Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky's favourite journalist', had said that the Vote 2025 initiative had 'nothing to do with the real opinion of the Hungarian people'. He said Sydorenko was in agreement with the opposition Tisza Party's claim that the result of the Vote 2025 survey was 'fake'.
'It's clear as day that Zelensky and Tisza are colluding with each other,' Menczer said. He cited Sydorenko as saying that Zelensky wanted a change of government in Hungary because Tisza and its leader, Peter Magyar, were in favour of giving Ukraine EU membership.
He said the Vote 2025 survey was under 'constant attack'. 'Zelensky doesn't like the fact that this is Hungary and not Ukraine, and that he doesn't get to call the shots here,' Menczer said. 'The sovereigntist Orban government and the political community of the Fidesz-Christian Democrats behind it will defend the decision of the Hungarian people against every attack,' he added.

FM: Government hopes Trump's peace efforts in Ukraine will succeed

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said in Brussels on Tuesday that the Hungarian government hopes that US President Donald Trump's peace efforts in Ukraine will succeed in the coming weeks. At a press conference during a break in an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Minister Szijjártó was asked to comment on Trump's threat of imposing tariffs against Russia if no peace agreement is reached in Ukraine within 50 days. Minister Szijjártó said no one had done more for peace in Ukraine than Trump, for which the president deserved respect and praise. 'I think it is clear that if European politicians and Ukrainian politicians had not hindered the peace efforts, they could have been successful by now,' he said, according to a ministry statement. 'We hope and trust that Donald Trump's efforts will succeed in the next fifty days, and bring about a ceasefire and the possibility of peace talks in Ukraine, and then this issue will no longer be relevant in fifty days,' he added. 'We are all hopeful and thank Donald Trump for his efforts so far and hope that his efforts will bring results in the coming weeks,' he said.

Gergely Gulyás: Whoever supports this budget, finds Ukraine more important than Hungary

At today's Government Info press briefing, Minister Gergely Gulyás described the draft as a 'pro-Ukraine budget' and emphasized that Hungary cannot support it in its current form. According to the minister, the leaked proposal allocates a quarter of the EU's entire budget—€190 billion for Ukraine and €88 billion for enlargement purposes—while cutting funding for cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy. 'They're taking money away from farmers and cohesion and sending it to Ukraine. Anyone who supports this is placing Ukraine ahead of Hungary,' Gulyás declared. The government expressed full solidarity with Hungarian farmers protesting the cuts. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had earlier warned that the proposal would make European farmers the biggest losers while positioning Ukraine as the primary beneficiary. 'This draft cannot even serve as a basis for negotiations,' Gulyás asserted, adding that the Commission also aims to expand EU bureaucracy by hiring 2,500 new employees and increasing their salaries—moves the Hungarian government considers unjustifiable. In response, Hungary is calling on all political actors to reject the Commission's proposal and reaffirm their support for a cohesive agricultural policy that benefits all EU citizens. The government also urged a return to an objective cohesion policy, free from political conditionality. Beyond budget issues, the government introduced the 'Home Start' loan program. Starting September 1, working Hungarians without their own home will be eligible for a 3% mortgage loan of up to HUF 50 million. The loan—available for a maximum of 25 years—can be used for flats priced up to HUF 100 million or houses up to HUF 150 million, with a price cap of HUF 1.5 million per square meter. The regulatory framework will be finalized by early August. The briefing also addressed growing concerns about Ukraine's internal practices. Minister Gulyás condemned the recent death of Sebestyén József, a Hungarian-Ukrainian dual citizen who died from injuries sustained during violent forced conscription. He stated that any country where such practices occur is unfit for EU membership. 'He was not only Ukrainian, but a European Union citizen,' Gulyás said, calling the lack of response from other EU member states 'shocking.' Hungary has proposed adding three Ukrainian military officials involved in the case to the EU sanctions list.

Orbán: It is time Brussels stood up for Transcarpathian Hungarians

The Hungarian government called on the European Union to include Ukrainian leaders who are responsible for the death of Hungarian national József Sebestyén on its human rights sanctions list. In a video posted on Facebook on Tuesday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said it is time Brussels stood up for the Ukrainian people and Transcarpathian Hungarians, rather than just the Ukrainian authorities. Earlier in the day, the Hungarian government called on the European Union to include Ukrainian leaders who are responsible for the death of Hungarian national József Sebestyén on its human rights sanctions list. 'The entire Carpathian Basin has seen and been shaken by the footage proving that our compatriot, József Sebestyén, was beaten to death by individuals referred to as conscription officers during forced conscription,' the prime minister said. 'Nothing gives any state the authority to engage in such brutality like the kind Ukraine committed against József Sebestyén,' PM Orbán said. 'His fate clearly illustrates the conditions in Ukraine, the state-controlled lawlessness and the complete lack of legal certainty.' PM Orbán said the case exposed the 'Brussels machine's praise of [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky' and proved why Ukraine must not be allowed to join the European Union. 'József Sebestyén was not just a Ukrainian, but also a Hungarian and therefore a European Union citizen,' PM Orbán said. 'The Hungarian government today initiated in Brussels the immediate placement of the Ukrainian leaders responsible for the death of Hungarian national József Sebestyén on the European Union's human rights sanctions list.' He said the EU has done this several times in the cases of other countries. 'It is time Brussels stood up for the Ukrainian people and Transcarpathian Hungarians, rather than just the Ukrainian authorities,' PM Orbán added.
