Diamondbacks get major Eugenio Suarez injury update as MLB trade deadline looms
Tests on the Diamondbacks third baseman's right index finger came back negative after he was hit with a 96 mph fastball from Tigers reliever Will Vest on Monday.

Suarez was out of Arizona's lineup Tuesday, but The Post's Jon Heyman reported that it 'sounds like he's day to day' with the injury.
The news is a breath of fresh air for the Diamondbacks, who are exploring moving Suarez, one of the top bats on the market, ahead of Thursday's trade deadline.
Heyman reported last week that the Phillies, Mariners, Cubs, Reds, Astros, Tigers and Brewers were potential fits for the two-time All-Star.
The Yankees were considered a potential destination for Suarez before they acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Rockies.

Suarez has been one of the top sluggers in baseball over the past half-decade, smashing 150 home runs since 2021, which are the eighth-most among all hitters over that period.
This season, Suarez is hitting .247 with 36 home runs with a National League-leading 87 RBIs.

MLB trade deadline: Live updates, news, transactions, rumors as Eugenio Suárez avoids serious injury, Seranthony Domínguez swaps jerseys mid-series to join Blue Jays
The 2025 MLB trade deadline is just around the corner, and teams are already making moves. The Arizona Diamondbacks unofficially kicked things off last week by trading first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners, and several other teams got in the mix over the weekend. The Yankees made two acquisitions in Ryan McMahon and Ahmed Rosario, and the Mets traded for Gregory Soto. The action should continue in the coming days, as MLB's contenders scramble to add talent ahead of the season's stretch run. On Monday, Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase, considered a likely trade target, was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through Aug. 31 in connection with a sports-gambling investigation. Meanwhile, Diamondbacks All-Star 3B Eugenio Suárez, who many considered atop the MLB trade market, was hit in the hand by a fastball Monday evening. X-rays came back negative. On Tuesday, the action was headlined by a swap between the Orioles and Blue Jays, as Baltimore sent reliever Seranthony Domínguez to Toronto in exchange for RHP prospect Juaron Watts-Brown. Interestingly, the two teams were mid-series (and scheduled for a double-header), so following the trade, Domínguez had a short walk to his new team's clubhouse ... and a short turnaround time before stepping in to pitch in the second game of the day. Domínguez pitched the bottom of the seventh inning for the Blue Jays, notching two strikeouts. There aren't many superstars expected to be on the move ahead of this deadline, but every contender has a hole to fill. No team is running away from the field in the standings, which means some teams likely need to do something to stand out. The deadline is 6 p.m. ET Thursday. After that, the only ways teams can add to their rosters are by calling up minor leaguers or signing free agents, and any player who isn't in an organization by the end of August is ineligible for the postseason. Braves' Ronald Acuna Jr. Placed on IL With Achilles Tightness, Will Undergo MRI
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. was removed from Tuesday night's loss at Kansas City with tightness in his right Achilles tendon and will be placed on the 10-day injured list. Acuña experienced the discomfort after chasing down a ball in right field. He'll be evaluated further on Wednesday with an MRI in Atlanta. "It's an Achilles thing, it's going to take a while," manager Brian Snitker said after the Braves fell 9-6 to the Royals. "He'll go on the IL and hopefully in 10 days or so it'll clear up." Acuña said he initially felt pain while running the bases on Monday night. "It happened when I scored from first to home on that play," Acuña said through an interpreter. "They are going to examine me tomorrow so we'll see how it goes." The discomfort returned after Acuña ran for a foul ball in the sixth inning Tuesday night. Later in the inning, a ball was hit over his head and he gave chase. He left the game after the sixth. "It was hurting even more," Acuña said through an interpreter. "I was kind of out there hoping they wouldn't hit it my way and of course any time you do that, they always hit it your way." Acuña said the pain was worse than it was on Monday. "I told them yesterday and everyone said, 'Take the day if you want it, you can have the day off,'" Acuña said. "I've missed so much time already through injuries I didn't want to miss any more time." The five-time All-Star and 2023 National League MVP missed most of last season with a torn left ACL, and only returned to the Braves' lineup on May 23 this season. In 2021, Acuña tore his right ACL in July, and missed the rest of the year before a late-April return in 2022. "It's an injury, I'm worried," Acuña said. "It's more pain, but it feels kind of, I feel it a lot when I try to put pressure on it." Acuña did walk off the field before a trainer followed him into the locker room. The Braves (45-61) have dealt with numerous injuries during their disappointing season. "It's just like, Ozzie (Albies) hit a ball into the dirt and it went in his eye," Snitker said. "I was worried that that was an oblique the way he reacted there. I don't know, it's just one of those things, you just have to deal with it. It's not fun dealing with it, not easy dealing with it, but you just have to." Acuña is batting .306/.429/.577 with 14 homers and 26 RBIs in 55 games this season. He went 2 for 4 with a homer on Monday night. Snitker said Eli White will play right field in Acuña's absence. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Will Mets Cut Ties With Luisangel Acuña In Trade For $50M White Sox Star?
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Mets seem to be the front-runners for Luis Robert Jr. if the Chicago White Sox decide to move him. Robert is coming to the end of his six-year, $50 million extension in Chicago, the last two years of which have been a major disappointment. But he's heated up in July, and the former All-Star could provide a spark for a team that hasn't gotten much from its center fielders. According to reporter Mark Feinsand, the Mets have been described as one of the "most aggressive" teams in pursuit of Robert, who also has club options for the next two seasons at $20 million each. PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 21: Luisangel Acuña #2 of the New York Mets attempts to turn a double play against Kyle Schwarber #12 of the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on June 21, 2025... PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 21: Luisangel Acuña #2 of the New York Mets attempts to turn a double play against Kyle Schwarber #12 of the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on June 21, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Mets defeated the Phillies 11-4. MorePreviously, Mark Vientos was a name at the forefront of Robert rumors, as Bob Nightengale of USA Today had said Chicago was asking for the 25-year-old third baseman. However, another young Mets infielder might be at risk as well. Feinsand reported Wednesday that Luisangel Acuña, the National League Rookie of the Month in April, was a name the two teams had discussed in Robert negotiations. "The White Sox are looking for a solid return for Robert, who remains an above-average defender in center field," wrote Feinsand. "Infielder Luisangel Acuña is one name being discussed in talks between Chicago and New York, a source said." Acuña, 23, has only 17 appearances since he was called back up from Triple-A on July 10. He's a useful pinch-runner, but the Mets don't seem to trust his bat enough to make an impact on their playoff run. Does that mean that Acuña, the younger brother of Atlanta Braves superstar Ronald Acuña Jr., will be on the move for the second time in three years at the deadline? We'll know the answer by Thursday night. More MLB: Yankees Rumors: Pirates Emerging As Likely Pitching Trade Partner?
