Stakes go beyond bypoll in Tarn Taran for NSA detainee MP Amritpal's party; ; Waris Punjab De's candidate search getting tough after Khalra widow rejects offer
Amritpal Singh
's father, Tarsem Singh, his party's interest in contesting the Tarn Taran assembly seat bypoll is both symbolic and strategic. "Bhai Amritpal's followers want his party to contest to express support for him and his cause," he says.
The seat, left vacant after the death of AAP MLA Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal, has emerged as a critical political test for Tarsem — not just for votes, but for sentiment.
Amritpal, lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA), had secured a surprise victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Khadoor Sahib despite being incarcerated. One of the nine assembly segments under the Khadoor Sahib constituency is Tarn Taran, where Amritpal received 44,703 votes in 2024.
The math, Tarsem believes, favours Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De). In the 2022 assembly elections, Dr Sohal had won by getting around 52,000 votes.
But numbers are only part of the equation. For 'Team Amritpal', the bypoll is about maintaining symbolic momentum. The panthic image cultivated by Amritpal — with clear echoes of the slain militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale — is central to his appeal.
Amritpal came to prominence in Sep 2022, controversially taking charge of Waris Punjab De, a group founded by the late actor-activist Deep Sidhu.

His hardline image, vocal support for Khalistan, and a campaign urging youth to reject drugs and modern vices earned him mass attention and state scrutiny. The breaking point came in Feb 2023, when he and his supporters carried the Guru Granth Sahib — considered the living Guru in Sikhism — to Ajnala police station in Amritsar to free an aide.
This act, seen by many as sacrilegious, triggered a statewide crackdown.
After evading arrest for 35 days, he was captured in Rode — the same village Bhindranwale hailed from — and subsequently jailed in Assam.
Yet, in 2024, his Lok Sabha win was widely interpreted as a public rebuke of the govt's crackdown.
Keeping Amritpal's panthic image in mind, Waris Punjab De initially approached Paramjit Kaur Khalra, widow of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, to contest the bypoll, but she declined. Focus then shifted to Satwant Kaur, who is part of the five-member committee opposing Sukhbir Badal's hold on Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Waris Punjab De is banking on its panthic image in the bypoll. Tarn Taran's tilet for panthic candidates is visible in the last five assembly elections. The seat elected Shiromani Akali Dal's (SAD) Harmeet Singh Sandhu in 2002, 2007 and 2012. In the last two elections, he lost, but was a close second, as he got 45,156 votes in 2017 and 39,347 in 2022.
AAP, for its part, is banking on governance and development. Party spokesperson Shashivir Sharma said, "We have our work to show for it. Our high command will present a strong and dedicated candidate focused on the development of Tarn Taran. What other parties do is their own business." While the date of the bypoll is yet to be announced, Khalsa University vice-chancellor Mehal Singh remarked that development and drug eradication would likely outweigh identity politics.
"There was a time when people voted for Amritpal, but that may not be repeated," he said.

War of words between BJP-AAP over revised phone reimbursements for ministers
The upper limit of mobile handset price for the chief minister has been set to Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 1.25 lakh for the ministers. The monthly call charges were fixed as per the actual bills. In an office memo issued on July 9, the General Administration Department (GAD) of Delhi government revised ceilings for the cost of mobile handsets and monthly charges payable to service providers. New Delhi, Jul 14 (PTI) The ruling BJP and opposition AAP indulged in a war of words over enhanced reimbursements of the Delhi government for mobile phones of the chief minister and the ministers. The mobile handset will not ordinarily be replaced within a period of two years from the date of its purchase. However, if at any point in time, the probable cost of repairs exceeds 50 per cent of the total initial cost of the mobile set, replacement will be allowed on a case-by-case basis, the memo said. Officials said that the reimbursement amounts for the mobile phone sets were revised in 2013. The upper ceiling of mobile phones was around Rs 45-50,000. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj took a dig at the BJP government and congratulated the chief minister and the ministers. AAP MLA Anil Jha, in a press conference, accused the BJP of being 'anti-poor' and celebrating by gifting expensive mobile phones to the minister. He said that the BJP, despite presenting an annual budget of Rs 1 lakh crore this year, has failed to deliver on its promises of providing Rs 2,500 to women, laptops to girl students, or jobs for youth. Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor hit back at AAP, saying even MCD councillors and MLAs use high-end phones because they use them for storing records and doing official work. He asked Jha if he had any objection to the cost of the chief minister and ministers' mobile phones, then he should also say something about the vehicles purchased with Rs 1.43 crore during 2015-2022, for the then chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal. Kapoor said AAP leaders should make political statements while maintaining dignity. PTI VIT HIG This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. In Tarn Taran, stakes go beyond bypoll for jailed MP Amritpal Singh's party
Tarn Taran: For NSA detainee and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh 's father, Tarsem Singh, his party's interest in contesting the Tarn Taran assembly seat bypoll is both symbolic and strategic. "Bhai Amritpal's followers want his party to contest to express support for him and his cause," he says. Box Both ran anti-drug campaigns Both AAP and Amritpal have placed anti-drugs campaigns at the heart of their messaging — though the methods differed. AAP recently launched a broad crackdown on the drug trade, while Amritpal's grassroots campaign in 2022-2023 urged youth to embrace traditional Sikh values and reject addiction. Ultimately, for Amritpal's party, the stakes go beyond one seat. Winning Tarn Taran would be a step toward consolidating Amritpal's symbolic authority and sustaining a panthic narrative. For his opponents, the bypoll will be a litmus test of how deep his influence really runs and whether it ends at the prison gates.

Sood: Plans in place to boost network & power output in city
New Delhi: Several power transmission projects worth Rs 3,310 crore were in various stages of implementation, and more schemes costing nearly Rs 1,810 crore were in the pipeline, which will improve Delhi's power sector in the coming months, minister Ashish Sood told TOI. The power minister said due to the lack of attention of the previous AAP govt, the transmission network of Delhi largely stagnated over the past few years, and there was no significant capacity addition, resulting in an increase in power outages over a period of time. Sood agreed that Delhi Transco Limited executed only 58 of 120 schemes under its 13th business plan, and only one substation was commissioned under their 14th plan. "The result was an increase in constraints and bottlenecks in the transmission and distribution network in Delhi. But, just in a few months of the BJP govt coming into office, significant reforms are taking place to revive and revitalise the power sector of Delhi," Sood said. "The transmission capacity of Delhi will increase from the present 13,040 MVA to 19,835 MVA at the 400kV level and from 14,780 MVA to 19,340 MVA at the 220kV level. This significant capacity addition in the power network is going to ensure reliability and uninterrupted power supply to residents of Delhi for the coming years," Sood said. The minister informed that power discoms have also planned to infuse capital investment of around Rs 1,937 crore in the current financial year for strengthening the distribution network of Delhi, which was significantly higher than the last two years. "There was less network upgradation during the tenure of the previous govt, but due to the continuous review and decisions of the BJP-led dispensation, using creative strategies and load rationalisation in consultation with all stakeholders, Delhi was able to meet a peak demand of 8,442 MW on June 12 without any load shedding. The unscheduled outages also reduced significantly from 2,045 in the previous year to 1,946 in the current year. With the concentrated effort of the BJP-led govt, the outages are going to further decrease in the coming years," Sood said. The minister also highlighted the increase in subsidy for installing rooftop solar plants as a step towards providing clean, green, and uninterrupted power supply in Delhi. He added that the power regulator recently released guidelines for rooftop solar installations under the utility-led aggregation model.
