Perak Assures NR-REE Mining Will Not Harm Environment

Barnama4 days ago
LENGGONG, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Perak government has assured that all mining activities involving non-radioactive rare earth elements (NR-REE) will not harm the environment.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said although rare earth mining presents a new opportunity for generating state revenue, the government will not compromise on protecting the people's interests.
He said the state government guarantees that NR-REE activities will utilise modern mining technologies to improve efficiency and safety while safeguarding the environment.
'When we initiated the NR-REE mining pilot project in Mukim Kenering, Hulu Perak, one of the key requirements was strict compliance with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedures, particularly those concerning environmental protection.
'The latest extraction method for this mineral no longer involves digging, but instead uses the In-Situ Leaching (ISL) method, which involves injecting ammonium sulfate solution into the ground to dissolve the rare earth elements, which are then pumped back to the surface for processing,' he said at a press conference after presenting the third-year progress report of the Perak Sejahtera 2030 plan, here today.
Saarani said the state government would not allow NR-REE mining activities if it does not comply with standard operating procedures (SOP) and the requirements set by the relevant technical agencies.
'NR-REE mining using the ISL method is the latest sustainable approach with controlled environmental impact, low operational costs, and good worker safety standards.
'Therefore, we do not have to worry about landslides, there will be no clearing of trees, and the forest reserve itself will be protected. If it causes environmental damage, we will not allow it,' he said.
Previously, media reports stated that the state government had identified new potential NR-REE mineral sites in three additional districts apart from Hulu Perak, with estimated reserves of approximately 1.7 million metric tonnes.

Ringgit opens marginally higher vs US dollar

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened marginally higher against the US dollar amidst improving United States (US) economic data, which supported the greenback, said an analyst. At 8 am, the local note rose to 4.2125/2280 against the greenback, from Thursday's close of 4.2195/2255. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit remains well-supported, underpinned by the government's commitment to ongoing fiscal reforms such as the sales and service tax (SST) and RON95 subsidies rationalisation. "The foreign interest in Malaysian Government Securities (MGS) and Government Investment Issue (GII) has also been quite positive," he told Bernama. On the dollar performance, Mohd Afzanizam said the US Dollar Index (DXY) rose 0.42 per cent to 97.18 points as the latest jobs report indicates a resilient US labour market. He said the US economy looks resilient, which has led to lower expectations for an interest cut by the US Federal Reserve (Fed). "The two-year US Treasury note yielded 10 basis points higher to 3.88 per cent," he told Bernama. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It advanced against the Japanese yen to 2.9098/9207 from 2.9333/9376, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7568/7780 from 5.7621/7703, and rose against the euro to 4.9577/9759 from 4.9756/9827 yesterday. The local note also traded higher against its ASEAN counterparts. It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3057/3182 from 3.3146/3196, went up against the Thai baht to 12.9835/13.0421 from 13.0211/0457, and strengthened against the Philippine peso to 7.48/7.52 from 7.50/7.51. However, it was almost flat against the Indonesian rupiah at 260.0/261.1 from 260.5/261.0 at yesterday's close. - Bernama

LHDN identifies 845 cases for action under Ops Tanjong in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) has identified 845 cases for audit and enforcement action in the 10th Tax Compliance Operation, codenamed Ops Tanjong, conducted around Penang. LHDN deputy chief executive officer (Compliance) Datuk Hisham Rusli said the operation, involving 238 officers, focused on key economic sectors, including manufacturing, electrical and electronics, digital and technology, logistics, contractors, and engineering. He said inter-agency collaboration will continue to be strengthened as a vital element of effective and sustainable governance. "The implementation of OP Tanjong demonstrates LHDN's readiness to adapt its compliance strategies to the local economic landscape, without compromising the principles of fairness and transparency. "We believe that integrated efforts like this will continue to be the foundation for a sustainable and transparent tax ecosystem, directly contributing to the country's fiscal capacity to support the national development agenda," he said in a statement on Thursday (July 3). He said the decision to conduct the operation in the state is a continuation of the LHDN's targeted initiative to strengthen fiscal accountability and ensure that fairness in the tax system is effectively implemented at the grassroots level. Six key activities were carried out during the operation, including tax audits, verification of taxpayer information, strategic compliance, collections, enforcement of stamp duty, and legal action. The approach also emphasises education by engaging directly with taxpayers to raise awareness of their rights and responsibilities within the national tax system. - Bernama
