Saints bring back coaches from last year's team, including future Hall of Famer
The New Orleans Saints announced their 2025 coaching staff on Thursday, and while we knew many of the names on it from previous reporting, the team did answer a couple of questions we had about who was coming back. Four key assistants are confirmed to return, and several of them are getting promotions.
First and most obvious: Jahri Evans is returning and will continue to work with the big men up front, but with a new job title. The future Hall of Famer and Super Bowl XLIV champion was previously listed as an offensive assistant. Now he's been named assistant offensive line coach. It's a small distinction, but an important one. It also sets him up to run the offensive line room himself someday if he keeps climbing the ladder.
Next up: Brian Young, the team's longtime pass rush specialist who has now been given the title of assistant defensive line coach. Young earned positive reviews from his players after taking over the defensive line midway through last season, and now he's going to work closely with legendary position coach Bo Davis.
Additionally, assistant linebackers coach Adam Gristick is returning to the team after previously working as a defensive assistant, often splitting time with the linebackers and safeties. He represented the Saints at the Senior Bowl where he coached linebackers on the National Team, so this isn't new to him even if it's technically a new title. He's one of the few hires made by Dennis Allen who has stuck around with the Saints.
Also, senior defensive assistant Peter Giunta is returning in the same role. He's been a part of the organization for ten years and has 34 years of NFL coaching experience. Giunta has played a critical role in scouting and developing defensive backs over the years, helping the Saints identify diamonds in the rough like Rico Payton, Jordan Howden, and J.T. Gray.
A handful of other coaches in less-prominent roles are returning from the 2024 staff: strength and conditioning coaches Charles Byrd and Riley Ireland, plus Mike Martinez, who has worked as an assistant to the head coach for Sean Payton, Dennis Allen, and now Kellen Moore.

Saints safety J.T. Gray just suffered the first injury of training camp

New Orleans Saints veteran safety J.T. Gray suffered a lower-body injury during Monday's practice, which was the first injury of this year's training camp. Afterwards, Saints head coach Kellen Moore said that Gray was still being evaluated, but that he did not "think that it was anything bad." Moore also later added that he will be able to provide more of an update on Tuesday after tests are completed. Rod Walker of The Times-Picayune noted that Gray had slipped during a special teams session, which makes sense as that is the main role that Gray plays on the team. Gray is one of the longest-tenured players on the roster, having been in New Orleans since he entered the league as an undrafted rookie in 2018 (out of Mississippi State)). He has only played 153 career snaps on defense, but has 2,065 career snaps on special teams. He made the All-Pro first team in 2021, when he was also recognized as a Pro Bowler, and has made the second team twice, most recently last year.

The NFL's best players wear black and gold in 'Madden NFL 26' 99 Club

When will the Saints' best join them? What do Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Saquon Barkley and Ja'Marr Chase have in common? They were some of the players to receive 99 overall ratings in Madden NFL 26, this year's edition of EA Sports' long-running video game franchise. Along with Justin Jefferson, Lane Johnson, and Myles Garrett, they make up the latest class of Madden's exclusive 99 Club. And a slick graphic from Bleacher Report Gridiron gave each of these players the gold-medal treatment they deserved, swapping their teams' colors for black and gold. We probably won't see Allen or Jackson throwing to Chase and Jefferson for the New Orleans Saints, but it's a good vision. You can see it for yourself right here. But how long has it been since the Saints were represented on the 99 Club? Pro Football Hall of Fame left tackle Willie Roaf made the cut on Madden NFL 99, and quarterback Drew Brees was recognized for Madden NFL 11 (not just on the 99 Club; he was also that year's cover player). Fresh off of setting NFL records for catches and yards in a 16-game season, wide receiver Michael Thomas was highlighted on Madden NFL 21. So it's been five years since a Saints player earned a 99 overall rating. Hopefully the Saints can get one of their own in the 99 Club before too long. Five-time All-Pro linebacker Demario Davis is the highest-rated Saints player in this year's game, with a 90 overall rating, followed up by Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy (89). But they're the only players representing New Orleans in the game's top 100 highest ratings. Let's see if guys like young wide receiver Chris Olave, and offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga can elevate their game this season to stand among the best in the league.

Broncos QB Bo Nix reveals what he discussed with Drew Brees this offseason

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton broke some news last week, casually mentioning that quarterback Bo Nix traveled to San Diego to work with former NFL quarterback Drew Brees (who won a Super Bowl with Payton while playing for the New Orleans Saints). Nix has also connected with Peyton Manning, and he had the chance to pick the brain of Eli Manning while filming a show for ESPN+ earlier this offseason. 'It was fun," Nix said Saturday when asked about visiting Brees. "Any time you can spend some time with a guy like that, with that experience and just that mind and the knowledge of the game. Just his routine and what he was able to do. More than anything, it was just sitting down and talking to him. "A lot of guys are like that. Peyton and Eli are the same way. Any time you can pick those guys' brains, and just kind of stand in their shoes and see what they went through, and if you can pick up on any one thing that's a win in the conversation.' Nix was asked in a follow-up question if he discusses Xs and Os or things like leadership and routines when he has the opportunity to connect with legendary quarterbacks. The second-year QB had an impressive answer. 'That's a great question," Nix said. "I go with the leadership, how to handle the job. Xs and Os are going to change. They're going to adapt over time, and really technique could adapt over time because we find different ways, unique ways to do things. With technique, it goes a lot to your physical capabilities. It can be different per person. How to be a leader and how to handle certain situations, those kind of can carry over. That's more or less what I'm trying to do with a guy like that, is figure out, 'What are some things that if you were in a bad spot, what would you do here? If you were going through this, what would you do here?' Just seeing how they handled things, seeing how they handle situations and experiences. "For our job, we talk about leading and all that kind of stuff. That's the name of the game. They don't really care… Your job is to go out there and complete passes and to score points. Everybody understands that. It's the off the field. How are you encouraging guys? How are you making sure guys are seen, and making sure guys are getting what they need and being put in a position to succeed so that we all can help each other? We're all good players. We're all talented. We all know the object of the football game. Now it's all about those second-layer things that are deeper than just what's on the football field. To me, that's what makes a good team. That's what makes good leadership and a close football team that wins a lot of games.' With mentors like Brees and the Mannings, as well as an accomplished quarterback-friendly coach in Payton, Nix has clearly been set up for success going into his second season. After an impressive rookie campaign, Nix is doing everything he can to take the next step in Year 2. So far, so good. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X!
