Pony.ai steps up mass production of robotaxis, targets overseas expansion
Chinese autonomous driving technology firm is gearing up to mass produce driverless cabs to make its robotaxis widely available and more affordable, as technological advancement helps shorten its path to commercialisation. The Guangzhou-based company – the only firm with approval to operate robotaxi services on the mainland's four most developed cities – is banking on an accelerated pace of commercialisation at home and abroad to achieve cost efficiency, according to Lou Tiancheng, co-founder and chief technology officer. 'We are anticipating a pickup in production [of robotaxis],' he said in an interview on the weekend. 'Over the past few years, we have solidified our tie-ups with carmakers to attest to the feasibility of building a large volume of driverless cabs.' would partner with local carmakers GAC and BAIC, and Toyota of Japan in production, and target a fleet of 1,000 robotaxis by the end of this year, he added. Nasdaq-listed received a permit to run its robotaxis in Shanghai's Pudong New Area last week. The permit allows the company to charge fares, pioneering the move in the nation's major commercial and financial hub. will initially operate its fleet in the Jinqiao and Huamu areas totalling a combined 40 sq km. That will be gradually expanded to other parts of Pudong, China's 1,400 sq km pioneer zone to showcase progress in building a modern socialist system. 'We believe this milestone demonstrates Pony's technological and operational readiness in the robotaxi business,' BofA Securities said in a report on Monday, reiterating its buy recommendation. 'We believe that Pony will scale up its robotaxi fleet size and see improving profitability, given better economies of scale.' Meanwhile, has expanded its operations in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, offering its services 'at any time'. It previously operated only between 7am and 11pm. The company is also looking to create new revenue sources by offering value-added in-car infotainment services to customers or supplying autonomous driving control systems to carmakers, Lou said. It was looking at Hong Kong, South Korea, the Middle East and Europe as potential markets to widen its reach, he added. Baidu's autonomous driving unit Apollo, and robotaxi start-up WeRide are deemed by analysts and industry officials as China's answer to US-based Waymo, the global leader in self-driving taxi service. Driverless cabs could account for 6 per cent of China's taxi market, aided by advanced digital infrastructure and public acceptance, HSBC said in a report earlier this month. China's robotaxi market could eventually be worth about US$40 billion a year, the bank said, without giving a time frame. reported a 4.3 per cent increase in revenue to US$75 million last year, while its net loss more than doubled to US$275 million. Shanghai authorities also granted licences to Baidu's Apollo, WeRide, Jinjiang Taxi, Dazhong Transportation and SAIC Motor to operate robotaxis in Pudong, on the sidelines of the three-day World Artificial Intelligence Conference in the city. The issuance of these licences – on a pilot basis – demonstrates Shanghai's efforts in advancing the development of driverless technology.

Mercedes-Benz profit skids nearly 70pc as US tariffs, China slump hit hard
FRANKFURT, July 30 — Premium German carmaker Mercedes-Benz said Wednesday its second-quarter profit plunged nearly 70 per cent due to US tariffs and weak sales in China, prompting it to lower its full-year revenue outlook. Net profit for the period was €957 million (RM4.69 billion), far below the €1.5 billion analysts polled by financial data firm FactSet had expected. Without tariffs the firm's car business would have achieved a profit margin of 6.6 per cent compared to an actual 5.1 per cent, Mercedes-Benz said. That amounts to a cost of hundreds of millions of euros given overall sales of €24.2 billion at the cars division for the quarter. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kaellenius said the results were 'robust' considering 'the dynamic business environment'. 'We're adapting to new geopolitical realities by using our global production footprint intelligently,' he added. Trump in April slapped an additional 25 per cent levy on imported cars as part of an aggressive trade policy he says will help boost US manufacturing. That hit European carmakers, with Jeep- and Citroen-owner Stellantis as well as auto giant Volkswagen all reporting slumping North American sales at recent results. Mercedes-Benz's own sales by volume fell 12 per cent in the United States over the period. In China they tumbled 19 per cent, underlining the challenge the company faces against local competitors such as BYD. Mercedes-Benz put out new guidance for the year to take account of tariffs, forecasting groupwide revenue 'significantly below' the €146 billion it took in last year. Back in February it expected 2025 revenue to be 'slightly below' the 2024 level. Along with other carmakers, Mercedes-Benz then withdrew its guidance in April whilst it digested the impact of Trump's tariff blitz. At its key cars division Mercedes-Benz said that it now forecasts a profit margin of between 4 and 6 per cent, including the effects of tariffs. Excluding tariffs it expects a profit margin of between 6 and 8 per cent. — AFP

Motor racing-Revolut to become title partner of Audi F1 team
Revolut logo is seen in this illustration taken July 29, 2024. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration LONDON (Reuters) -British financial technology giant Revolut will become title partner of the Audi Formula One team from next season in a "monumental" multi-year deal, both parties announced on Wednesday. The fast-growing London-based fintech company was valued at $45 billion last year through a secondary share sale to new and existing investors. Swiss-based Sauber are becoming the factory Audi team in 2026, when Formula One starts a new engine era with major rule changes and an 11th team on the grid with the arrival of Cadillac. Jonathan Wheatley, principal of the Audi team, said the deal had been put together in less than four months and had obvious benefits for both sides. "If you imagine we need to engage with our fans, we need a partner that's going to help us do that," Wheatley told Reuters in a video call. "We need to expand hugely into this incredible global space that Formula One is in at the moment, and we need to become the most attractive team in Formula One." Wheatley said the deal reflected Audi's brand strength and was a "good news story for Formula One." "It's the Audi magnet that's drawing a lot of people here right now," he said, speaking from the team headquarters in Hinwil, Switzerland. Revolut has more than 55 million customers but has no physical branches. It gained a banking licence in Britain in 2024, after a three-year wait, and has global expansion plans. Antoine Le Nel, Revolut's chief marketing officer, gave no financial details of the F1 partnership but said the company was in for the long run with Audi and aiming for 100 million customers by 2027. He said Revolut had been looking for a platform to help the company build on its expansion. "I think we have a true opportunity to really bring F1 to a huge audience," he told Reuters. "From a retail perspective as well as a business perspective, I think there's going to be a lot of opportunities for us to connect the fan base to the sport through the Revolut platform." Le Nel said Audi taking on the established teams in Formula One was like Revolut competing against traditional banks. "If you look at Audi, very premium German brand dominating its market, it's where we want to be," he said. "It's a way for Revolut to elevate and get to where Audi has been for such a long time." Audi said Revolut Business would be extensively integrated into the team's financial operations. Sauber are sixth in the 10 team championship ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix and have scored in their last five races. German driver Nico Hulkenberg celebrated his first F1 podium at Silverstone this month, finishing third in the British Grand Prix in a major boost for the team.
