The groups claimed the strikes were in retaliation for an earlier drone and missile attack on radar and military infrastructure in Iraq, an attack allegedly carried out by Israel-linked operatives from within Iraqi territory.
The renewed violence has fueled concerns of escalating proxy conflict in Iraq, with the U.S. military presence remaining a flashpoint.

What card did Trump play to push Netanyahu toward a Gaza ceasefire?

ALBAWABA - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's sudden agreement to a peace plan with Hamas is a big change from how he has been acting during the war. He did this because of growing pressure from both inside and outside of Israel. Some prisoners would be exchanged as part of the plan, which is meant to open the door to more talks. Far-right ministers are against it, but it is a result of political necessity and a need to change strategies. Recently, Hamas agreed to a modified ceasefire deal. This put more pressure on Netanyahu from the Israeli people and from U.S. President Donald Trump, who backed Israel in its fight with Iran and is now pushing for peace in the area. Even though Israel has made military progress, including U.S. attacks on Iranian targets, Netanyahu has not been able to use this to his advantage in politics. Polls show that he would have a hard time putting together an alliance if elections were held soon. At the same time, people are getting more and more angry about the long war and what's happening with the Israeli POWs. Adding to the stress, the Israeli military has told the cabinet that any more actions in Gaza will have little effect and cost a lot of money. Commanders wanted to be clear about the army's goals, saying that it had already done what it was told and that continuing to fight would have diminishing results. Netanyahu is now trying to avoid a fight with military leaders and meet public demands. He seems to be finding a balance between making his far-right supporters happy and supporting Trump's peace efforts. This shift is shown by his recent trip to Nir Oz and change in tone, putting the release of prisoners first. But talks are going to be hard. There are still disagreements about the prisoners chosen, the terms of aid delivery, and the size of Israel's retreat. Reports say that Netanyahu wants Trump to give him political rewards, possibly in the form of normalizing things in the area or giving Iran new guarantees. While talks are still going on, Netanyahu's move shows both how the ground is changing and how he is trying to stay alive politically.

Hezbollah armed parade sparks outrage from Lebanese government

ALBAWABA - Hezbollah soldiers held an armed parade in central Beirut, which was strongly criticized by Lebanon's Prime Minister and other political leaders. This made arguments about the group's weapons and the state's power even stronger. The controversial display of force happened in the Zoqaq al-Blat district on Saturday during celebrations for Ashura. The event happened just a few hundred meters from the government offices. Dozens of armed Hezbollah members were seen marching through the streets with assault weapons and chanting "At your service, Hezbollah" and other phrases in support of the group. Politicians criticized the show right away, but Hezbollah hasn't said anything in public yet. The parade was strongly condemned by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who said it was "completely unacceptable under any circumstances." In a post on the social network X, Salam said he had called the Ministers of Interior and Justice and asked them to start legal action and look into those who did it. Ibrahim Mneimneh, an independent MP from Beirut, agreed with the others and called the parade an act of "thuggery and intimidation" meant to keep military power over Beirut without any checks. He said that these kinds of displays don't show a good understanding of the current situation in Lebanon and are "void of real value." He also asked the police and the courts to step in right away and arrest those responsible. @grandserail @LBpresidency

Gaza raid a mysterious message: Al-Qassam targets Israeli forces in bold attack

Published July 5th, 2025 - 10:14 GMT ALBAWABA - Hamas's military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, said on Saturday that its fighters had attacked Israeli forces successfully in downtown Khan Younis, killing at least one person. The operation comes at a time when fighting has gotten worse and diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire deal are picking up speed again. Also Read Israeli soldiers killing each other amid heavy censorship in Gaza Al-Qassam said in a Telegram message that the fighters attacked Israeli troops and armored trucks on Friday morning near the Directorate of Education in Khan Younis. The group said they destroyed an armored personnel carrier (APC) by planting a "Shuwadh" explosive device in the command cabin of the vehicle. They said the blast fully destroyed the vehicle and its crew. The group also said that its fighters fired a "Yasin 105" anti-tank rocket at the APC and then used light and medium weapons to attack the rescue workers as they arrived. Similar bombs were also aimed at two Merkava tanks, and Al-Qassam said that some of their crew members were killed. Al-Qassam said that Israeli planes took a long time to evacuate people after the attack. The Israeli military has not yet made a formal comment about what happened. The action happens at a time when resistance activity in the Gaza Strip is growing and peace talks are expected to happen soon. Before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned trip to Washington, D.C. on Monday, Hamas recently sent an answer to mediators that was described as "positive." — AHMAD SLMAN (@ahmadslmanx) June 28, 2025 They said on Friday that two soldiers were killed in different incidents in Khan Younis and Beit Hanoun. In the past few days, attacks on Israeli troops and military infrastructure have been recorded by both Al-Qassam and Islamic Jihad's Al-Quds Brigades. According to the Israeli military, 883 soldiers have died since the war on Gaza began on October 7, 2023. Of these, 439 were killed during operations on the ground that began on October 27. There are now 6,032 people who have been hurt, including 2,745 people who were hurt during the ground attack in Gaza. Observers and rights groups keep pointing out that Israel has tight control over information about the war. They say that the military stops the media from reporting on Israel's loses, limits access to photos and videos, and only lets official information be shared through heavily watched channels. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (
