What card did Trump play to push Netanyahu toward a Gaza ceasefire?
Some prisoners would be exchanged as part of the plan, which is meant to open the door to more talks. Far-right ministers are against it, but it is a result of political necessity and a need to change strategies.
Recently, Hamas agreed to a modified ceasefire deal. This put more pressure on Netanyahu from the Israeli people and from U.S. President Donald Trump, who backed Israel in its fight with Iran and is now pushing for peace in the area.
Even though Israel has made military progress, including U.S. attacks on Iranian targets, Netanyahu has not been able to use this to his advantage in politics. Polls show that he would have a hard time putting together an alliance if elections were held soon. At the same time, people are getting more and more angry about the long war and what's happening with the Israeli POWs.
Adding to the stress, the Israeli military has told the cabinet that any more actions in Gaza will have little effect and cost a lot of money. Commanders wanted to be clear about the army's goals, saying that it had already done what it was told and that continuing to fight would have diminishing results.
Netanyahu is now trying to avoid a fight with military leaders and meet public demands. He seems to be finding a balance between making his far-right supporters happy and supporting Trump's peace efforts. This shift is shown by his recent trip to Nir Oz and change in tone, putting the release of prisoners first.
But talks are going to be hard. There are still disagreements about the prisoners chosen, the terms of aid delivery, and the size of Israel's retreat. Reports say that Netanyahu wants Trump to give him political rewards, possibly in the form of normalizing things in the area or giving Iran new guarantees.
While talks are still going on, Netanyahu's move shows both how the ground is changing and how he is trying to stay alive politically.

Shocking Hamas plot to infiltrate 'Israeli' intelligence unit with cleaning crew revealed
'Israeli' troops in Gaza uncovered an attempt by Hamas to infiltrate a base for the 'Israeli' Military Intelligence (Unit 8200) using a cleaning services tender, reports by Hebrew media said. Unit 8200 is an 'Israeli' Intelligence Crops unit of the 'Israeli' military that is responsible for clandestine operations, collecting electronic signal intelligence, counterintelligence, cyberwarfare, military intelligence, and surveillance. It is often likened to the US's National Security Agency (NSA). 'Israeli' soldiers operating in Gaza managed to capture documents for Hamas showing a plan to access a base for Unit 8200, using a cleaning service contract, 'Israel' Hayom said in a recent report. The Hamas plans were described as 'calculated'. An online cleaning services tender was put up for one of Unit 8200's facilities, which Hamas discovered and used as a 'potential pathway' to access the installation. The tender was posted after the events of Oct. 7, 2023, although the report did not specify when. After the 'Israeli' military discovered the plans, the cleaning services tender was put on hold and the military issued directives to strengthen security protocols for military publications on public internet space.

Gaza truce talks to resume in Doha before Netanyahu heads to US
Indirect negotiations between 'Israel' and Hamas are set to resume Sunday in Doha for a Gaza truce and captive release deal, ahead of a visit by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House. Netanyahu had earlier announced he was sending a team to Qatar, a key mediator in the conflict, though he said Hamas's response to a draft US-backed ceasefire deal contained "unacceptable" demands. Under mounting pressure to end the war, now approaching its 22nd month, Netanyahu is scheduled to meet on Monday with US President Donald Trump, who has been making a renewed push to end the fighting. A Palestinian official familiar with the talks and close to Hamas said international mediators had informed the group that "a new round of indirect negotiations... will begin in Doha today". The group's delegation, led by its top negotiator Khalil al-Hayya, had already arrived in the Qatari capital, the official told AFP. On Friday, Hamas had said it was ready "to engage immediately and seriously" in negotiations. Netanyahu, who confirmed 'Israeli' negotiators were also en route, said that "the changes that Hamas is seeking to make in the Qatari proposal... are unacceptable to Israel". Hamas has not publicly disclosed its response to the US-backed proposal, relayed by mediators from Qatar and Egypt. 'Enough' Two Palestinian sources close to the discussions told AFP the proposal included a 60-day truce, during which Hamas would release 10 living captives and several bodies in exchange for Palestinians detained by 'Israel'. However, they said, the group was also demanding certain conditions for 'Israel's' withdrawal, guarantees against a resumption of fighting during negotiations, and the return of the UN-led aid distribution system.
