Nilgiris police intensify measures to clamp down on drugs
The SP took part in an awareness rally to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Udhagamandalam. Ms. Nisha told reporters the police were continually taking steps to clamp down on the sale of illegal drugs in the district.
She said that while around 25 kg of marijuana had been seized and destroyed over the last few years, that the same amount had been seized in 2024-2025 alone.
'In addition to ganja, synthetic drugs like MDMA and methamphetamine have also been seized. For the first time, hydroponically grown ganja has been confiscated. Since synthetic drugs are now increasingly being used by youth, steps are being taken to eliminate them completely,' she said.
The police had also increased surveillance at the border checkposts to prevent the smuggling of synthetic drugs from Kerala and Karnataka. 'As a result, border checkpoints like the one at Kakkanallah have been reinforced, and buses, cargo vehicles, and cars are being checked, leading to the seizure of synthetic drugs,' said Ms. Nisha.
'Efforts are being made to control the demand through awareness and the supply through inspections and surveillance. Tourists visiting the district are also warned not to bring banned substances. Awareness banners have been placed at border checkpoints regarding this. Police are conducting daily vehicle inspections and carrying out special checks on weekends. Investigations are being carried out in forest areas near the borders to check for illegal marijuana cultivation,' she added, stating that the public can report information about the movement of drugs through the Drug-free Tamil Nadu mobile app.
Students participated in the awareness rally on Thursday. A human chain was also formed from ATC Junction as part of the event.

Rajasthan: MDMA worth over ₹3 crore seized in Jaisalmer, 2 held under anti-drug crackdown

The team intercepted an SUV allegedly being used to transport 336.4 grams of MDMA by the accused -- Prakash (28) and Prem Prakash (28) -- residents of Phalodi district. Police said the two intended to sell the MDMA in smaller quantities within Jaisalmer town. Shivhare said the crackdown was part of a statewide anti-narcotics drive. The suspects are being interrogated to uncover further links in the supply and distribution chain. According to police, Prakash has a previous case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act registered against him at Mandore police station. Further investigation is underway, they added.

Afghan man arrested in Jabalpur for ‘illegally' obtaining Indian passport, running racket; two others held too
The Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a man from Afghanistan for allegedly getting an Indian passport using forged documents and two of his accomplices from Jabalpur, police said on Friday (August 1, 2025). As per a statement from the M.P. Police, the accused — identified as Sohbat Khan, currently residing in Jabalpur, Dinesh Garg and Mahendra Kumar Sukhdan, both residents of Jabalpur — were arrested based on a tip off received by the city unit of the ATS. Mr. Garg is a forest guard in the Forest Guard and has been working in the election cell of the Jabalpur Collectorate for the past two years, the police said. 'The Jabalpur unit of the ATS had received a tip off from an informer that some Afghanistan nationals were living illegally in the city. Sohbat was living illegally in Jabalpur for the last 10 years and he had also married a local woman,' the police said. Apart from having obtained his own passport using fake documents, Mr. Khan was also getting Indian passports made for his Afghan friends living in West Bengal and Chhattisgarh by preparing documents on wrong addresses in Jabalpur and taking money for them, the police added. 'So far, the ATS has received information about about 20 such Afghan youths whose passports were tried to be made from Jabalpur addresses, out of which passports of Akbar and Iqbal, residents of West Bengal, have been made from fake addresses of Jabalpur,' it said, adding that information about transactions of about ₹10 lakh has been obtained so far. The police said that Mr. Khan is being questioned to find out about the people helping him in securing police verification, fake addresses from the post office and other necessary documents required for passports.
