Government school teacher accused of molesting over 20 students booked under Goondas Act in Ooty

A 50-year-old government school teacher, who is alleged to have molested more than 20 students has been booked under the Goondas Act in the Nilgiris district. The accused, identified as M. Senthil Kumar (50) from Iduhatty in Udhagamandalam, had been working as a science teacher at a government school in the Nilgiris. He is said to have been working as a teacher for over 23 years in different parts of Tamil Nadu and had transferred to the school in Udhagamandalam a few months ago. It has been said that the Nilgiris district police, who have been conducting awareness programmes to sensitise school students on sexual assault, harassment and sexual violence committed against children, were informed by students that their teacher had sexually assaulted them since he joined the school. So far, more than 20 students have come forward and have alleged that they were molested by the accused. Police said that they have widened their investigation to schools where Senthil Kumar has worked over the last two decades to ascertain if he had committed the crime on other children. Senthil Kumar was arrested earlier this month under Sections 75(2) (sexual harassment) of the BNS Act and various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, including sexual assault, as well as the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Based on the recommendation of the Nilgiris district superintendent of police N.S. Nisha, orders were passed by the Collector to book Senthil Kumar under the Goondas Act, who has currently been lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.

Nilgiris police intensify measures to clamp down on drugs

In the last year alone, the Nilgiris district police have seized around 25 kg of marijuana, said Nilgiris district Superintendent of Police N.S. Nisha on Thursday. The SP took part in an awareness rally to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Udhagamandalam. Ms. Nisha told reporters the police were continually taking steps to clamp down on the sale of illegal drugs in the district. She said that while around 25 kg of marijuana had been seized and destroyed over the last few years, that the same amount had been seized in 2024-2025 alone. 'In addition to ganja, synthetic drugs like MDMA and methamphetamine have also been seized. For the first time, hydroponically grown ganja has been confiscated. Since synthetic drugs are now increasingly being used by youth, steps are being taken to eliminate them completely,' she said. The police had also increased surveillance at the border checkposts to prevent the smuggling of synthetic drugs from Kerala and Karnataka. 'As a result, border checkpoints like the one at Kakkanallah have been reinforced, and buses, cargo vehicles, and cars are being checked, leading to the seizure of synthetic drugs,' said Ms. Nisha. 'Efforts are being made to control the demand through awareness and the supply through inspections and surveillance. Tourists visiting the district are also warned not to bring banned substances. Awareness banners have been placed at border checkpoints regarding this. Police are conducting daily vehicle inspections and carrying out special checks on weekends. Investigations are being carried out in forest areas near the borders to check for illegal marijuana cultivation,' she added, stating that the public can report information about the movement of drugs through the Drug-free Tamil Nadu mobile app. Students participated in the awareness rally on Thursday. A human chain was also formed from ATC Junction as part of the event.

First Plantation Show inaugurated in the Nilgiris

The first-ever Plantation Show was inaugurated as part of the final event of the annual summer festival in the Nilgiris at Kattery Park near Coonoor on Friday. Despite the inclement weather, the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops set up exhibits showcasing traditional lifestyles of farming communities from across Tamil Nadu, with thousands of tourists also visiting the park on their way to Coonoor and Udhagamandalam. The Horticulture Department said the plantation show was organised to showcase the tea and coffee industries in the Nilgiris and also to highlight the scope for growing plantation crops such as cashews, coconut, palmyra, cocoa, oil palm, and areca nut to farmers. Plantation crops were used in exhibits that portrayed the lifestyle of villagers engaged in farming and agriculture. Cultural events were also organised as part of the plantation show, with the department announcing that awards and prizes will be distributed to farmers growing plantation crops under four different categories at the completion of the show on Sunday (June 1, 2025). This year, the plantation show will signal the end of the summer festival season in the Nilgiris. Nilgiris Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru and District Superintendent of Police N.S. Nisha were present at the inaugural event. Tourist spots reopen Following the easing of rain, which had affected parts of Udhagamandalam, Gudalur, Kundha and Coonoor, in the Nilgiris over the last week, the Forest Department announced the reopening of a few tourist spots in Coonoor on Friday, with Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose being among them. The district administration said an average of 30 mm of rain was recorded from Thursday evening to Friday morning across the Nilgiris.
