Ileana Garcia has ‘zero regret' on voting down campus-carry bill
In 2018, the Florida Legislature reacted to the mass shooting in Parkland by passing major safety regulations. Chances for a such a response to Thursday's shootings at Florida State University are slim.
That doesn't mean legislators are ignoring the politics of guns.
Start with Miami Republican state Sen. Illeana Garcia, who joined with three Senate Democrats in a committee vote last month rejecting a proposal sponsored by then-GOP Sen. Randy Fine (SB 814) to allow concealed weapons on college and university campuses.
'I have zero regret,' Garcia said on X late Thursday night about that vote, in which she joined with Democratic Sens. Jason Pizzo, Mack Bernard, and Carlos Guillermo Smith in opposing the proposal. Two other Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee were absent for the vote.
'Proud to have voted against your moronic campus carry bill, that didn't have a house companion,' Garcia said, referring to Fine. 'This decision wasn't about partisan politics; it was rooted in common sense. The incident at FSU was tragic, but the real issue lies not with the firearm itself, but with the factors that led to it. The individual involved was the child of a deputy sheriff and had knowledge of weapon handling, yet chose to act recklessly.'
Fine noted the vote in a posting on X on Friday, where he included an excerpt of his speech in the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 25.
'There is no magic force field that keeps guns from coming onto our college campuses,' he said. 'Less than one month ago, in my last bill presentation as a Florida Senator, I attempted to give adults the same right to protect themselves on campus as they have off. My four-minute closing speech is below. For the first and only time in 8.5 years in the Legislature, I failed. By a vote of 3-4, with two absent, the committee voted to keep universities 'gun-free zones.' An offensive name given what happened yesterday. The no vote included all three Democrats plus one so-called Republican. I am incredibly grateful to the law enforcement who ran into the gunfire yesterday to subdue the gunman. But in the time that took, this murderer was able to shoot seven people, two of whom have died. Today, I wonder if one of those seven had been able to defend themselves, the outcome would have been different. In any event, I will continue praying for all.'
Following the Parkland school shooting in February of 2018, within weeks the Florida Legislature and then-Gov. Rick Scott came together to pass the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public High School Safety Act, a comprehensive measure that included numerous provisions regarding firearms and school safety, plus community mental health resources.
There have been attempts over the past three legislative sessions to repeal a provision of that law that bans individuals under 21 years of age from purchasing rifles and shotguns, and prohibiting licensed firearm dealers, importers, and manufacturers, from selling them to people of that age. Those measures have passed the House in 2023, 2024, and this year. In the past two years, the Senate did not pass a companion measure, and a similar measure has yet to advance in the 2025 legislative session.

Budget office says Trump's tax law will add $3.4 trillion to deficits, leave 10 million uninsured
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump's tax and spending law will add $3.4 trillion to federal deficits through 2034, the Congressional Budget Office reported Monday, a slight increase in the projection that takes into account the final tweaks that Republicans made before getting the legislation over the finish line. More than 10 million people will be uninsured under the law in 2034 because of the law, CBO found, an improvement from an earlier projection that found 11.8 million people losing coverage over the decade. The release of the CBO analysis Monday comes at the end of a grueling legislative fight, but at the start of a longer political struggle to come as the two parties clash over the law's impact on the economy, healthcare and government programs. Republicans are touting the bill as a tax cut for all Americans, yet a recent AP-NORC poll found about two-thirds of U.S. adults expect the new tax law will help the rich as Democrats attack the legislation. The bill Trump signed into law on July 4 extended current tax rates for individuals that were set to expire at the end of this year and temporarily created new tax deductions for tips, overtime and auto interest loans for new vehicles assembled in the U.S. Republicans also used the bill to cut future spending on Medicaid and food assistance, and to phase out certain clean energy tax credits more quickly. Democrats were quick to highlight the CBO's findings. 'Today's report reminds us of something: facts are stubborn and the facts are clear,' said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer. 'The big, ugly betrayal is a loser for the country and will be a loser for the Republicans." Republicans say the bill was critical to ensure most Americans didn't experience a significant tax increase next year. Trump and Republicans have also insisted that economic growth will exceed the CBO's projections for the next decade, erasing the projected deficits as more revenue comes into the Treasury than anticipated. Nonpartisan fiscal watchdogs also highlighted the CBO's latest projection. Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said there will be a shorter-term 'sugar high' as stimulus makes its way through the economy. But modelers from across the ideological spectrum agree that any sustained economic changes are likely to be modestly beneficial, or negative. 'And not one serious estimate claims this bill will improve our fiscal situation,' MacGuineas said. 'Rather, positive growth effects are likely to be swamped by the effects of higher debt and interest rates.' The CBO said more than $1 trillion in deficit savings is generated through the health portions of the bill, which includes new work requirements for certain Medicaid beneficiaries in states that expanded the program through the Affordable Care Act. Some late changes on Medicaid were made to the bill to win over holdouts. The Pentagon continues to withdraw troops sent to Los Angeles to handle protests against immigration enforcement. WASHINGTON — The Pentagon continued its withdrawal of troops sent to Los Angeles as part of President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration, ordering 700 Marines back to their base. Monday's move follows a similar drawdown last week of 2,000 National Guard soldiers from Los Angeles. Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had ordered thousands of National Guard and the active-duty Marines to Los Angeles after some protests against immigration enforcement became violent in June. The Guardsmen had protected Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers who were rounding immigrants suspected of being inside the United States illegally. Marines protected federal property. The deployments came despite opposition from California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, both Democrats, who said local law enforcement officials had control of the protests. In a statement, Sean Parnell, the Pentagon's chief spokesman said the Marines were 'instrumental in restoring order.' 'With stability returning to Los Angeles, the Secretary has directed the redeployment of the 700 Marines whose presence sent a clear message: lawlessness will not be tolerated,' Parnell said. Bass, in a statement, blasted the Trump administration for the deployment to her city. "This is another win for Los Angeles but this is also a win for those serving this country in uniform,' Bass said. 'Just this morning I stood with veterans, families of active duty officers, and business leaders to show the impact of this unnecessary, unprecedented, and unconstitutional assault on our city." About 2,000 California National Guardsmen remain on duty in Los Angeles. The Department of Homeland Security has asked the Pentagon for 20,000 National Guard troops to assist its immigration enforcement efforts across the country, USA TODAY reported in June.

Will NY pols finally come to their senses after shooting of CBP agent by an illegal immigrant?
Saturday night's shooting of a border agent by an illegal immigrant sums up nearly everything wrong with progressive policies — on the border, crime, New York's sanctuary-city status and more. The 42-year old off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer was sitting in a park with a friend when two armed thugs rolled up on a moped aiming to mug the unsuspecting pair. One shot the agent in the face, yet the hero agent somehow managed to fire back. Advertisement No surprise: Both suspects turned out to be illegal immigrants who slunk in during the Biden border rush. Alleged triggerman Miguel Mora, 21, has a lengthy record of arrests for violent crimes in The Bronx and Massachusetts, and a deportation order back to the Dominican Republic, to boot. Christhian Aybar-Berroa also has violent-crime rap sheet with an order of removal to the DR. Advertisement Aybar-Berroa and Mora were each stopped at the border and then ushered into the country. That was the norm for four long years: Joe Biden opened the doors wide and invited any miscreant or predator who made his way to the Mexican border to come in and make himself at home. Advertisement Then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Democrats in Albany passed disastrous criminal-justice 'reforms,' including the elimination of cash bail in 2019. Soft-on-crime judges and prosecutors released perps with abandon. How'd that work out? Failures to appear and rearrests for new crimes rose, predictably. Thugs like Mora and Aybar Berroa were often freed minutes after being booked. Gov. Kathy Hochul added to the damage by extending a Cuomo-era order that makes New York a 'sanctuary jurisdiction.' State employees are directed not to cooperate with federal immigration officers. The result: New York City has become a haven for illegal immigrants who want to prey on locals. Its 'sanctuary' laws removed ICE from Rikers Island and forbade NYPD and Corrections from handing almost anyone over to the feds. And remember: New York pols are generally on the side of the criminals; the City Council openly says it designs laws to minimize the 'immigration consequences' for illegal migrants. Advertisement And if ICE comes to arrest you, you can count on clowns like city Comptroller Brad Lander to create a scene — assuming there's a camera nearby. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem got it wrong when she blamed Mayor Eric Adams for the city's sanctuary-city rules. He's actually fought to roll them back and has tried to cooperate with ICE officials when legally allowed to. But she was 1,000% right in fuming that there's 'zero reason' someone 'who is scum of the earth like this should be running loose on the streets of New York City.' Advertisement President Donald Trump has done his bit by closing the border and empowering ICE to deport violent criminal illegal immigrants. But progressives have fought him tooth and nail to keep us unsafe, helping create an environment where an innocent border agent gets shot in a park. How many more such shootings before they come to their senses?
