Paris Olympian woman wrestler tests positive for doping

CHENNAI: IN another embarrassing turn of events, a top wrestler who was part of the Olympic Games in Paris last year tested positive for banned substance. It is learnt that the woman wrestler has been tested during an out-of-competition test.
It is learnt that the wrestler had been a medallist at the U23 world championships as well. The woman wrestlers' sample was apparently taken in May and had even competed at the World Military Martial Arts Championship and had won a medal in June.
According to sources in the know of things, the notice of charge has been issued and the wrestler had been provisionally suspended. She can go for B sample test and contest the ban. The National Anti-Doping Agency, the testing authority in India, apparently had taken the urine samples and have sent the notices to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and even the World Wrestling.

New Delhi [India], July 8 (ANI): The Indian Under-15 wrestling teams delivered an outstanding performance at the 2025 Under-15 Asian Wrestling Championship held in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) from 4th to 7th July 2025, competing across Free Style, Greco-Roman, and Women's Wrestling categories. The Indian Under-15 Freestyle Wrestling Team emerged as Team Champions, securing a total of 203 points, leaving Japan in second place with 166 points. The Indian contingent claimed eight medals, including six gold, one silver, and one bronze, dominating the competition, according to a press release from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The medal rush in Free Style began with Vansh Ahlawat, who clinched the first Gold for India by defeating his Japanese opponent in a thrilling bout with a score of 9-8. Aaryan (44 kg) defeated a Kyrgyz wrestler by technical superiority (16-6). Prathmesh Suryakant Patil outplayed his Uzbek opponent with a 7-4 win. Rohit Mann secured a 10-0 technical superiority win over Tajikistan. Sachin (68 kg) pinned his Uzbek rival to win by fall. Kartik (85 kg) battled past Kazakhstan with a 3-1 victory. The Women's Wrestling Team displayed a valiant effort, finishing second overall with 202 points, just behind Japan, who scored 217 points. In an intense championship where seven gold medal bouts were contested between India and Japan, India managed to win two gold medals and a crucial bronze medal, eventually bagging a total of three gold, five silver, and one bronze medal. Jiya (33 kg) won Gold after a gritty 4-2 win against her Japanese counterpart. Purvi Sharma (66 kg) dominated her Japanese opponent with an 8-0 win. Diksha (39 kg) delivered a commanding performance by defeating her Kyrgyz opponent by fall. In the 58 kg Bronze medal bout, India outclassed Japan to add another medal to the tally. Despite narrow losses in several finals, the Indian girls displayed commendable skill and determination throughout the championship. The Greco-Roman team faced tough challenges and finished 5th in the overall medal tally. While most wrestlers lost out in Bronze medal bouts, Abhishek (48 kg) reached the final and secured a Silver Medal, falling short against Kazakhstan with an 8-0 scoreline. Additionally, Parnam Singh (68 kg) earned a Bronze Medal with a solid 10-1 win over the Kyrgyz wrestler. New Delhi : Paris Olympics quarterfinalist and Asian Championships silver medalist wrestler - who competes in the women's 76kg category - has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after her sample returned positive for prohibited substances. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Reetika, one of the country's brightest hopes in the women's wrestling after becoming the first-ever female grappler to qualify in a heavyweight category (76kg) at the Paris Games, was tested by the Nada's dope control officers (DCOs) during a selection trial at the Indira Gandhi (IG) stadium here, where the national camp is currently underway. After her positive dope result, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) told Reetika to leave the camp immediately and head back to her hometown in Haryana's Rohtak. Reetika's suspension period has kicked off on July 7 after the revelation of adverse analytical finding (AAF) and she will now have to appear before the Nada's Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) to prove her innocence. Since this being her first doping offence, Reetika is staring at a possible four-year ban. Based on doping failure, the United World Wrestling (UWW) - the sport's global governing body - also suspended Reetika for one year until July 7, 2026. The UWW posted on its website: "Suspended for the following reason until July 7, 2026. Provisionally suspended for ADRV by Nado India." The presence of banned substances in Reetika's urine sample is still unknown. The wrestlers was part of the Indian contingent for the upcoming UWW Ranking Series event in Hungary but her entry has now been withdrawn. Reetika was touted as one of the medal contenders for India at the World Wrestling Championships, scheduled in September. She has recently won the gold medal at the Ulaanbaatar Ranking Series in May.

The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has provisionally suspended her, pending further investigation and confirmation through the disciplinary process, as per a report in Hindustan Times. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Hooda has been asked to leave the ongoing national wrestling camp at the Indira Gandhi Stadium by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) following her provisional suspension for a doping violation. The report also mentions that two other wrestlers, including an Asian Championships bronze medallist, have also tested positive for banned substances and have been provisionally suspended. 'They have left the national camp. Interestingly all three are from the same training centre in Rohtak," the official was quoted as saying to HT. Who Is Reetika Hooda? Reetika, who competes in the 76kg weight class, has become one of India's top wrestlers since she qualified for the Paris Olympics and reached the quarterfinals. She secured a silver medal at the Asian Championships this year, and won gold at the Ulaanbaatar ranking series in May. She was a strong contender for a medal at the world championships scheduled in Zagreb in September. NADA provisionally suspended Reetika on July 7, 2025. It was revealed that she failed the test during a selection trial at the IG Stadium, where the women's national camp is being held. Following her failed dope test, UWW has suspended her until July 7, 2026. The national wrestling camp resumed this year after the Sports Ministry's suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India was lifted in March. A senior WFI official mentioned that since there was no national camp for almost two years, wrestlers were training at their centres and thus were not monitored.
