Police bust imported cockfighting ring worth RM4.7m in major Sabah raid

Malay Mail6 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — A police raid in Papar, Sabah has uncovered a large cache of 936 fighting cocks believed to be imported from the Philippines, as authorities intensify their crackdown on illegal cockfighting.
The operation, led by the Wildlife Crime Bureau and several local agencies, took place at a remote location in Kampung Kambizaan on July 25, the Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) Department of Internal Security and Public Order said.
Three men — a Malaysian, an Indonesian, and a Filipino — were arrested during the raid and are being investigated under local animal import laws.
Items seized included vitamin bottles, syringes, and over 100 bird-tagging rings, indicating the birds were being prepared for organised fighting events.
The department said the seizure, worth RM4.68 million, is one of the largest of its kind in the state this year.
Authorities suspect the site was used to rear fighting birds for underground betting syndicates.
The use of unlicensed foreign animals poses a risk to public health and contributes to illegal gambling.
The raid forms part of Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah (OBK), aimed at curbing wildlife crime and smuggling.
Between January and July, PDRM conducted 179 raids and arrested 314 individuals in similar operations nationwide.
Police say they will continue to intensify intelligence-led raids to protect public safety and wildlife.

Don't panic: Cannon fire, road closures expected for Warriors Day in Putrajaya

PUTRAJAYA, July 28 — The public has been advised not to be alarmed by the sound of cannon fire and to plan their journeys ahead of the 2025 Warriors Day parade, which will take place at Dataran Pahlawan Negara on July 31. Putrajaya police chief ACP Aidi Sham Mohamed said the Malaysian Armed Forces will fire 21 ceremonial rounds on Thursday, while a full rehearsal on July 29 will involve two rounds at the same location. 'Residents in nearby areas are advised to remain calm upon hearing the blasts. Traffic congestion is expected from 7am to 10am. Motorists are advised to cooperate and follow police instructions to ensure the parade proceeds smoothly,' he said in a statement today. Major roads expected to be affected include Persiaran Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Lebuh Perdana Timur and routes around Kompleks E. The public is encouraged to plan their travel early and consider alternative routes to avoid delays. Warriors Day is observed annually on July 31 to honour the service and sacrifices of Malaysia's security forces in safeguarding national peace and sovereignty. Since 1968, the event has been organised on a rotational basis by the Armed Forces and the Royal Malaysia Police. — Bernama

Cops probe ‘flogging' of PM effigy during Turun Anwar rally

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report on the incident was one of four received in relation to the rally at Dataran Merdeka. PETALING JAYA : Police are probing the reported flogging of an effigy resembling Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim near Masjid Negara during the Turun Anwar rally last Saturday. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report on the incident was one of four received in relation to the rally at Dataran Merdeka, Bernama reported. He said the case had been referred to the classified crime investigation unit in Bukit Aman for investigation under Section 41 of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, he said the other three reports were related to the use of drones. 'The three other reports related to drones have been forwarded to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia for further action,' he said, adding that any misconduct by rally participants would be investigated by the police. About 18,000 people took part in the rally, according to police estimates, although the organisers, PAS Youth, claimed that more than 200,000 participants were present. Protesters had called for Anwar to step down as prime minister over the rising cost of living, among others. At an anti-corruption rally in Sabah last month, organised by several Universiti Malaysia Sabah students, protesters burned a caricature of the prime minister. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 protest saw more than 100 people call for action over the Sabah water department scandal. Police later said they were investigating the burning of the caricature under the Sedition Act 1948 and Penal Code.

3,700 enforcement ops target misuse of retail licences by foreigners

by HIDAYATH HISHAM LOCAL authorities have carried out over 3,700 operations since 2023 to curb the misuse of retail licences by foreigners operating under Malaysian names. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the actions were aimed at protecting economic opportunities for local traders, particularly those benefitting from subsidised business facilities under the Madani Government. 'Local authorities have never permitted any foreign nationals to apply for or own hawker and petty trader licences, business premises, grocery shops, eateries, car workshops or market stalls,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was replying to Mohd Hasnizan Harun (Perikatan Nasional [PN]-Hulu Selangor), who had asked about current policies on foreigners operating in the retail sector and the misuse of business licences under the names of Malaysian spouses. Offences involving misuse of licences or proxy operations by foreigners are dealt with through strict enforcement measures, including licence revocations, compound fines, seizures and business closures. As of 2023, these actions have resulted in the cancellation of 23 business licences and the seizure of 2,880 premises for various violations, including illegal subletting and the use of local nominees. Among the steps taken by local authorities are regular monitoring of business areas with high foreign presence, seizure of goods from unlicensed foreign hawkers and revocation of licences where the actual operators are found to be foreigners. The government has also tightened the conditions for new applications and licence renewals across different states and increased joint enforcement efforts involving the Immigration Department and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). Nga added that inter-agency coordination remains crucial, as local authority (PBT) jurisdiction only covers licensing and premises inspections. 'PBT and the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) are always open to constructive cooperation with other agencies, including the Immigration Department and the PDRM,' he said. He stressed that these measures are necessary to ensure that facilities designed to uplift local entrepreneurs are not exploited by outsiders. The ministry views such abuse seriously, especially when government-provided business spaces — offered below market rates — are diverted to non-citizens through deceit or proxies. The Madani Government, Nga added, is committed to supporting local traders through structured empowerment initiatives, but insists on fair enforcement to prevent manipulation of the system.
