
Sabah special athletes shine at national meet
Published on: Wed, Jul 09, 2025 Text Size: The Sabah Special Olympics contingent brought home six golds, eight silvers and two bronzes. Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah contingent to the National Special Olympics Junior Development Sports Championships (S-JDSC) 2025 has made the State proud by securing a total of 16 medals consisting of 6 golds, 8 silvers and 2 bronzes at the national-level tournament held on June 28-29 in Ipoh, Perak. Led by head of delegation Rusmani Binjin and team manager Taren Sunil Manoharan, the team exceeded expectations with stellar performances across three sporting categories: athletics, badminton, and bocce. 'It was a tremendous boost to the confidence of our athletes. They proved they could rise to the occasion and excel even at the national level,' said an elated Taren, who is also Vice-Chairman of Special Olympics Sabah and Chairman of the Sandakan Chapter. The championship saw participation of 532 athletes representing 13 contingents from across Malaysia. Sabah's gold medallists were Mohd Safri Ramis (shot putt); Daniel Fraez Felgius (long jump); Rickyden Heron (badminton men's singles); Esam Isa (bocce men's singles); Malisa Musrikin (bocce women's singles); and Natasha Nordin and Ainul Mardiani (bocce women's doubles). The silver medals were won by Yusri Ramli (long jump, mixed relay); Intan Azwana Ibrahim (shot putt); Sherlyn Rimond (badminton); Mohd Rafizwan Achmat and Mohammad Al Azierul Ajmain (badminton doubles); Delbert Chok (bocce men's singles); Natasha Nordin (bocce women's singles), Delbert Chok and Chia Vui Ken (bocce men's doubles); and Marissa Masiun, Ayumie Farain Abdullah and Iqram Muhaimin Abdullah (mixed relay). The bronze medals came from Chia Vui Ken and Ainul Mardiana (bocce mixed team) and Marissa Masiun (long jump). The Sabah contingent's athletics team was coached by Umi Kalsum Isa and Masdorah Bzamban; the badminton team by Fiona Baru and Rick Bett Rick Charles; and the bocce athletes were guided by Ahmad Aiden Asyraf Majanggong, Chang Chun Moi @ Maria J. Chang and Florence James. Taren expressed hope that the Sabah team's remarkable achievements will serve as a catalyst for greater public and private sector support for Special Olympics initiatives in the State. 'This success will motivate us to organise more sports programmes for individuals with special needs. It's high time that the public becomes more aware of the important work being done by Special Olympics Sabah and our Sandakan chapter.' All systems go for veteran soccer tourney

KUNAK: Mostyn FC has completed preparations for its upcoming veteran football tournament to be held this Sunday (July 13) at the Mostyn Estate field. Club president Citra Masadi said work was done to ensure the pitch is in good condition, while facilities such as the grandstand, toilets and changing rooms are ready for use. 'We've made the necessary arrangements to ensure the tournament runs smoothly. The public, especially residents nearby, are welcome to attend,' he said. He said volunteers, club members and strategic partners carried out a gotong-royong last week to clean and prepare the area. Eight teams are taking part in the tournament, open to players aged 41 to 60, with cash prizes and trophies to be awarded. The teams include Mostyn FC, Tong Talun FC, Sollog FC, Pakatan FC, MU Supporters (Otai) Lahad Datu, Pebisa FC and Peng-Yu FC. Vision School Sandakan archers clinch two gold, three silver medals

SANDAKAN: Vision School Sandakan's archery team delivered an impressive performance at the recent MSSD Sandakan Archery Championship here by bringing home two gold and three silver medals. The gold medals were won by Caleigh Chong Ky Ne in the U-12 Girls Recurve and Caden Yeo Kah Han in the U-15 Boys Recurve, while the silver medallists were Zachariah Lai Ao Jie (U-12 Boys Recurve), Nicholas Yeo Kah Hsien (U-15 Boys Recurve) and Dexter Tsang (U-18 Boys Recurve). The other archers were Bryan Hiew Jun Hao and Jeazel Yukin (Barebow Open) and Joshua Chong Yao Jet and Crystal Yong Shi Qi (Compound Open). In total, seven archers have been selected to represent Sandakan at the MSS Sabah Championship in Lahad Datu later this month. UMS trio receive incentives

Kota Kinabalu: Three World University Games (WUG) bound students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) received incentives of RM1,500 each from the University on Monday. The three, who qualified for the biennial games to be held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany starting July 18 are Chelsea Cassiopea Evali Bopulas (Faculty of Psychology and Social Work), Farrel Glenn Felix Jurus (Faculty of Education and Sports Studies) and Hizilawanty Jamain (Faculty of Education and Sports Studies. The incentive handover ceremony was officiated by UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Mansor at the Chancellery Building in UMS here. Also present were Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) UMS Associate Professor Dr. Raman Noordin, Director of the Sports Centre Ahmadi Nurdin and the Dean of the UMS Knowledge and Language Centre Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali. Dr. Kasim said the incentives were a form of support from the university to athletes who made it to the international level, as well as a source of encouragement for other athletes on campus. 'The championship, which will last for 12 days is set to bring together university athletes from all over the world to showcase their potential on the global stage.
