Bengaluru: Karnataka Governor calls for collective action on environmental protection at Sustainability Summit
Addressing the Bangalore Sustainability Summit on Tuesday, themed 'Advancing Sustainable Development Goals: Enhancing the Impact of Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships through Knowledge Sharing and Collaboration', jointly organised by O P Jindal Global University and RV University.
'The recent challenges, especially the oxygen crisis, have underlined the critical importance of protecting our environment. Sustainable development is deeply embedded in our national ethos and governance philosophy,' the Governor said.
He highlighted that India has been committed to sustainable progress through landmark initiatives, including Make in India, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, National Rural Drinking Water Programme, National Health Mission (Urban & Rural), Digital India, Deendayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana, Kaushal Bharat, and the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana. 'States play a pivotal role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and several state-level schemes are contributing meaningfully to this national vision,' he added.
Praising Bengaluru as a hub of innovation and technological advancement, the Governor noted that the city also grapples with challenges such as rapid urbanisation, climate change, and pressure on natural resources. 'It is encouraging to see this summit focus on the power of knowledge sharing and cross-sector collaboration to tackle these challenges and drive impact.'
He lauded the efforts of Indian universities in promoting sustainable practices and preserving local biodiversity. 'Institutions across the country are becoming custodians of environmental responsibility, reflecting the true spirit of World Environment Day.'
Acknowledging the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor Gehlot cited national campaigns such as Clean Air, Save Water, Save Energy, Grow More Plants, and Green Cities as instrumental in spreading environmental awareness among citizens.
He also commended the University for its commitment to sustainability. 'Since its inception in 2009, the university has consistently demonstrated its dedication to the SDGs. Its recent Gold Medal in the Times Higher Education Online Learning Rankings 2024 and top rank in the Ministry of Education's Clean Campus Ranking are testaments to its environmental leadership and the critical role of youth in nation-building.'
Concluding his address, Governor Gehlot made a heartfelt appeal, 'We must collectively embrace our responsibility to safeguard the environment. Only through unified action can we ensure a clean, healthy planet for future generations. (ANI)

Ashok Gehlot questions Amit Shah on delay in Kanhaiyalal case probe
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has raised questions over the prolonged delay in justice for Kanhaiyalal, whose murder became a political flashpoint ahead of the previous Assembly elections. Taking to social media just ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Jaipur, Gehlot alleged that despite quick action by the Rajasthan Police, the case has seen no substantial progress under the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which falls under Shah's ministry. Gehlot recalled that before the 2023 Assembly elections, Amit Shah repeatedly invoked the Kanhaiyalal case in election rallies across Rajasthan to target the then Congress-led state government. 'In this case, the Rajasthan Police arrested the accused within just four hours. Both were found to be linked to the BJP. Yet the NIA took over the investigation overnight. We did not object, despite that,' Gehlot stated. He alleged that the BJP misled the public with false claims of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 50 lakh compensation being paid, which he claimed significantly contributed to the Congress government's defeat. 'Even after three years, justice has not been served. The NIA court doesn't even have a regular judge, and it has failed to get the statements of key witnesses recorded to date,' Gehlot added. Demanding answers from the Union Home Minister, Gehlot questioned how much longer Kanhaiyalal's family will have to wait for justice. 'The BJP used this case for political mileage, but they have done nothing to ensure speedy justice,' he said. He urged Shah to speak on the status of the case during his Jaipur visit and asked whether the Centre plans to strengthen the judicial process or continue using such sensitive matters for political benefit. It needs to be mentioned here that Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will visit Jaipur to participate in the Cooperative and Employment Festival being organised in Dadiya village on Thursday. The event is set to bring several major benefits to Rajasthan. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said that over 8,000 youth will receive appointment letters during the event. He also confirmed that Union Minister Shah will announce several developmental initiatives for the state. As part of the programme, HM Shah will inaugurate 24 warehouses constructed under the Food Storage Scheme and launch 64 millet outlets to promote "Shri Anna". In addition, loans worth approximately Rs 12 crore will be distributed to 1,400 beneficiaries under the Gopal Credit Card Scheme. He will also hand over 2,346 micro ATMs to milk-producing cooperative societies. A significant highlight of the event will be the launch of the White Revolution 2.0 PDCS online registration platform, aimed at streamlining the dairy cooperative sector. HM Shah will also flag off 100 new police vehicles during the occasion. The Home Minister is expected to visit an exhibition showcasing the achievements of the Cooperative Department, underlining the government's commitment to empowering the rural economy and youth employment

Custody battle unfolds after Russian woman found living in Gokarna cave with daughters: Report
A custody dispute has emerged following the discovery of a Russian woman and her two young daughters living in a remote cave in the forests of Karnataka's Gokarna region. Days after authorities located Nina Kutina and her children during a post-landslide inspection near Ramatirtha hills, her former partner, Dror Goldstein, has stepped forward seeking shared custody of the girls, news agency PTI reported. "I just want to be able to see my daughters a few times a week and take care of them, too. My concern is that if they go to Russia now, it will get tougher to keep in touch with them. So, I wish they could stay in India," he told the agency. The 38-year-old said he and Kutina, 40, had been estranged for a couple of years and had lost contact entirely when she left Goa with the children several months ago. 'I managed to find them on a beach in Gokarna, but Kutina refused to let me be with my children as I don't live with them anymore,' he explained. Odisha Bandh Today Over Student's Self-Immolation: What's Open & What's Closed

Several opposition parties have jointly called for a 12-hour Odisha bandh on Thursday, July 17, to protest against the death of a college student, who set herself on fire, alleging inaction by authorities over a harassment complaint against a professor. The bandh was called by eight Opposition parties in Odisha, demanding justice for the student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College. The bandh call is set to remain in place until 6 pm Today. According to news agency ANI, transport services were hit and shops remained shut in Bhubaneswar on Thursday. A man who was waiting to board a bus in Bhubaneswar stated that people are facing transportation issues due to the state bandh, but added that the protest is necessary when the administration fails to act. Security forces were deployed, and petrol pumps remained closed in Odisha's capital city as several opposition parties observed the state bandh. The bandh also caused long traffic jams on the Chennai-Kolkata Highway, where trucks and other vehicles were left stranded. Bus services were impacted in different parts of the state. Eight Opposition political parties, including the Congress, on Tuesday unitedly called for 'Odisha Bandh' on Thursday, July 17. They are demanding the resignation of the State Higher Education Minister and a judicial investigation in the demise of the student. The 20-year-old student had allegedly faced prolonged sexual harassment by the Head of Department (HoD) at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore. Despite filing a formal complaint and seeking help from the college principal, her grievances reportedly went unheard, leading her to take the extreme step on campus last Saturday. She was initially admitted to the Balasore district hospital and later referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar, where she succumbed to her burn injuries on July 14.
