Innovation is key to self-reliant India: Governor
Bengaluru: Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday said innovation is the only path for India to achieve self-reliance and global leadership in today's intensely competitive world. Highlighting India's rich heritage of innovation, the Governor said, 'India has always been a land of ideas. From the ancient universities of Takshashila and Nalanda to medical pioneers like Charaka and Sushruta, and mathematical legends like Aryabhata – innovation lies at the heart of our civilization. Today, it's not just about thinking; it's about transforming ideas into impactful reality.' He was addressing the gathering at 'Innovasthan – A Vichar to Vikas Yatra', a national campaign focused on fostering innovation, intellectual property (IP), and enterprise-led growth. The event was jointly organised by the Council for Industrial Innovation and Research and Jain (Deemed-to-be) University in Bengaluru. Gehlot noted India's remarkable rise in the Global Innovation Index, moving from 81st position in 2015 to 40th in 2023, and emphasised that innovation in India must expand beyond laboratories to influence policy, education, industry, and society at large. 'To become a global innovation leader, India must bring together its higher education institutions, startups, MSMEs, corporate sector, and policy bodies onto a common platform,' he said, adding that coordination and collective commitment must make innovation a national mission. The Governor also emphasised the growing potential in India's startup ecosystem. 'With over one lakh startups and 110 unicorns, India is now the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world. However, only a fraction of these are protected by intellectual property rights. This gap must be bridged through greater awareness and institutional support for IP protection,' he said. Referencing the Patent Annual Report 2022–23, he lauded Karnataka for filing over 6,500 patent applications but urged stakeholders to further accelerate these efforts, especially within higher education, MSMEs, and startups. 'Innovation is being encouraged at every level—schools, colleges, universities, industries. The government is also supporting this with the National Intellectual Property Policy. Our universities must be encouraged to establish IP centres and adopt frameworks to manage and commercialize intellectual property,' he said. Calling for a mindset of 'Innovate – Protect – Scale,' Gehlot stressed the importance of national initiatives like Startup India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, Innovation Mission, and Make in India in nurturing innovation ecosystems. 'An idea, a tool, a device, or an app that improves lives is more than just technology—it is development in action.' Praising Bengaluru as a hub of technology, education, and cultural vibrancy, he commended Jain (Deemed-to-be) University for its contribution to the city's emergence as a premier education centre. The Governor also described 'Innovasthan' as a movement aligned with the vision of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to build a self-reliant and innovation-driven India.

Bengaluru: Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot Saturday called for urgent action to bridge the intellectual property (IP) gap in the country's booming startup ecosystem and underlined the importance of establishing IP centres in universities. Highlighting the country's rise in the ecosystem globally (third largest now) with over 1 lakh startups and 110 unicorns, the governor warned that only a fraction is currently protected by IP rights, suggesting the need for increased awareness and institutional support. H e was speaking at the launch of Karnataka chapter of Innovasthan, a campaign focused on fostering innovation, IP and enterprise-led growth. Drawing parallels with China, he stressed that India could compete globally by leveraging its vast talent pool. He also called for regional language integration in technical education, urging that textbooks be developed in Kannada, with local institutions and experts taking the lead in making education more accessible and inclusive. Organised by the Council for Industrial and Innovation Research (CIIR) and Jain (Deemed-to-be University), the event highlighted India's rise in the Global Innovation Index—from 81st in 2015 to 40th in 2023. Mr. Gehlot praised initiatives such as 'Make in India' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' and stressed the importance of intellectual property (IP) management. Karnataka's 6,500+ patent filings in 2022–23 were cited as a model, with a call for educational institutions and MSMEs to prioritise IP. He urged that innovation must permeate education, policy, industry, and society, making it a national priority for sustainable development.

Ashok Gehlot hits out at BJP, NIA over delay in justice for slain Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal's family
Jaipur: Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Ashok Gehlot has criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Central government and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for failing to deliver justice to tailor Kanhaiya Lal Sahu, nearly three years after his brutal murder in Udaipur. Marking the third death anniversary of Kanhaiya Lal, Gehlot paid tribute to the deceased tailor and expressed grief that justice continues to elude the victim's family. "It is a matter of great sadness that even after three years, he and his family have not got justice," the former Chief Minister said in a social media post. Gehlot accused the BJP of politicising the murder case without making any real effort to ensure accountability. "The BJP used this case politically but made no effort for justice, whereas this is a very clear case in which the entire crime and even the confession of the accused is recorded on video," he said. Highlighting the swift action taken under the previous Congress government in Rajasthan, Gehlot said, "During our government, the accused was arrested within just four hours. But that very night, the NIA took over the case. Since then, justice has remained pending." He criticised the NIA and the Central government for procedural delays in the murder case. "Only six out of 166 witnesses have testified in the last three years. No special court or fast-track court was constituted, despite the heinous nature of the crime. Today, this case is being heard under the additional charge of a CBI court," Gehlot said. Taking a jibe at the BJP government in the state, the former Chief Minister alleged that the BJP misled the people with false claims of compensation to the family of the slain tailor Kanhaiya Lal. "They spread confusion with propaganda of Rs 5 to Rs 50 lakh as compensation and used the incident to gather votes," Gehlot said. He also questioned the timing of a new film based on the brutal murder of Kanhaiya Lal up for release. "Everyone knows who stands to benefit politically from this film, but justice has still not been served," he said, adding that if the case had remained with the Rajasthan Police, the accused would likely have been convicted by now. On this day in June 2022, Kanhaiya Lal Sahu was brutally murdered in broad daylight at his tailoring shop in Udaipur, with his throat slit in a gruesome act that shocked the whole country. Three years later, his elder son, Yash Sahu, continues to live by the three solemn vows he took after his father's death, during a protest demanding justice. Yash has neither immersed his father's ashes nor worn shoes or slippers since the murder. He has also not cut his hair for the past three years. "Until the killers of my father are hanged, I will not break these vows," Yash says with quiet determination. The Kanhaiya Lal case is currently being investigated by the NIA.

Gehlot accuses BJP, RSS of plotting to alter Constitution
Jodhpur/Jaipur: In a sharp escalation of political wrangling, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot Friday accused BJP and RSS of harbouring a long-standing agenda to amend India's Constitution. His remarks came in response to controversial statements made by RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, who suggested changes to the Preamble. Speaking in Jodhpur, Gehlot cited multiple Supreme Court judgments, including the landmark 1973 Kesavananda Bharati case, to emphasise the legal sanctity of the Constitution's Preamble. "This interpretation was further fortified in 1976 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who formally inserted the terms secular and socialist into the Preamble during the 42nd Constitutional Amendment," said Gehlot. He highlighted how the apex court established that secularism and socialism were fundamental to the Constitution's basic structure in the Minerva Mills case, SR Bommai judgment (1994) and most recently in Balram Singh case (2024). "The BJP-RSS ecosystem has consistently shown discomfort with the inclusive and pluralistic spirit of our Constitution," Gehlot stated on social media platform X. The ex-CM said Congress has demanded legal action against those "threatening the constitutional fabric" and has urged the judiciary to take suo motu notice of such statements. The political discourse took an additional turn when Gehlot responded to current CM Bhajan Lal Sharma's criticism of Congress's role during the Emergency period (1975-77). Gehlot acknowledged past mistakes, noting that Congress publicly expressed regret for the Emergency era. He pointed out that Indira Gandhi's subsequent electoral victory in 1980, securing 353 seats, demonstrated public forgiveness. "During the Emergency, many people were imprisoned. When Congress leaders, including Indira Gandhi, returned to power, we publicly acknowledged that there were many shortcomings and mistakes during that time (Emergency), and we expressed regret for these. That chapter is closed now. What more do you want?" Gehlot said. He added, "We were also imprisoned. Bhajan Lal Ji may not know this. The difference is that they went to jail during the Emergency and we went to jail in support of Indira Gandhi when she was expelled from Parliament despite winning the Chikmagalur election. Thousands of people across India were imprisoned in her support. I think about 2000 people from Jodhpur alone went to jail. The atmosphere was different then." Calling Sharma politically inexperienced, Gehlot said, "Bhajan Lal ji is new to this; he has become chief minister for the first time and he's a young first-time legislator, so he might not have all the information. We shouldn't mind what he says. He is Bhajan Lal ji, and Bhajan Lal ji also means someone who sings devotional songs, so he might not be aware of everything."
