Thai police arrest woman in Buddhist monk blackmail and sex scandal

The possible violation of the celibacy rule for monks has rocked Buddhist institutions and gripped public attention in Thailand in recent weeks. At least nine abbots and senior monks involved in the scandal have been disrobed and cast out of the monkhood, the Royal Thai Police Central Investigation Bureau said.
Wilawan Emsawat, in her mid-30s, was arrested at her home in Nonthaburi province north of the capital Bangkok on charges including extortion, money laundering and receiving stolen goods. Police said they traced money transferred to her by a senior monk from a bank account belonging to his temple in northern Thailand.
Wilawan has not made a statement since her arrest, and it was unclear if she has legal representation. Speaking to local media before her arrest, she acknowledged one relationship and said she had given money to that monk.
Scandals involving monks surface a few times a year in Thailand, but usually don't involve senior members of the clergy. The case also puts a spotlight on the large sums of money donated to temples controlled by abbots, which is in marked contrast to the abstemious lives they are supposed to lead under their religion's precepts.

Wilawan deliberately targeted senior monks for financial gain, police said, noting they found several monks had transferred large amounts of money after Wilawan initiated romantic relationships with them.

Naked US man rescued from sewer in Thailand after chaotic struggle

A naked American man who accidentally got stuck in a drain in Thailand tried to crawl deeper into the sewer and fight off his rescuers, biting and spitting at them when they finally broke through the concrete to get to him. The chaotic rescue on Monday morning started with a phone call from the residents of a block of flats along Kalpapruek Road in Bangkok. They told the police that a man had fallen through a gap in the concrete slabs covering a drain separating the building from a canal, the Bangkok Post newspaper reported. When rescuers arrived, they found a man wedged between the slabs with only his legs protruding from the opening of the drainage pipe connected to the canal. Despite being clearly stuck, the man, later identified only as 28-year-old 'Jack', refused help and shouted in English that he could get out on his own, according to the KhaoSod newspaper. Jack stuck in the drain. After being rescued, he was sent to hospital for further examination and psychiatric care. Photo: Poh Teck Tung Foundation He even tried to crawl deeper into the drain, while shouting incoherently, as the rescuers began to cut and drill through the concrete. Eventually, some of the rescuers had to crawl into the small space to pull him out, after binding his torso with cloth. Others had to push his legs from the opening. Jack became more agitated during the rescue process, even biting off the strap of a female rescuer's wristwatch and chewing on it, according to the Thai Examiner news website. His erratic behaviour continued above ground. After he spat at his rescuers, they placed a medical mask over his mouth and strapped him to a backboard to restrain him. During the initial medical assessment, paramedics found only scratches and no broken bones. But as his mental state was unstable and he appeared paranoid and disoriented, they suspected that substance abuse might be involved. A foreign resident of the block of flats who helped translate Jack's conversation told the rescuers that Jack claimed to be living in the building with his Thai girlfriend. But he could not explain how he came to be stuck in the drain.

Thailand defrocks 6 senior monks as sex and blackmail scandal engulfs Buddhist clergy

Six senior monks in Thailand have been defrocked and two others are missing after authorities uncovered tens of thousands of pornographic images and videos allegedly featuring a woman in sexual acts with high-ranking clergy – a scandal that has rocked the kingdom's conservative Buddhist establishment. The investigation began after the sudden disappearance of the abbot of Wat Tritossathep, a prominent temple in Bangkok, raised suspicions of misconduct. Eleven monks have so far been implicated, according to the Thaiger news website. The case came to light when police raided the home of a 35-year-old woman on July 4 in connection with an investigation into the disappearance, the Bangkok Post reported. The abbot, identified only as Arch, abruptly left the monkhood and severed contact with both the temple and his family in June, raising suspicions of fraud or romantic affairs. Upon investigation, authorities found that Arch had been in a relationship with a woman, known by her nickname of 'Sika Kor' or Golf. When Arch tried to break up with her, she allegedly claimed she was pregnant and demanded 7.8 million baht (US$241,000) from him. 13:20 Why Thailand could bring a fresh start to the world's chocolate industry Why Thailand could bring a fresh start to the world's chocolate industry Arch found out that her pregnancy claim was false and refused to give her the money, so she shared their private conversations with senior monks.
