SOGT maintenance rescheduled to Aug 5–11 to support power grid stability
Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The integrated maintenance work at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) in Kimanis has been rescheduled to Aug 5–11, from the earlier Aug 1–7 timeline. The decision was reached during a joint meeting between the Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos), Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, and the Grid System Operator on July 30. Ecos CEO Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said the new dates allow for key repair and testing work, including diesel-based reliability tests and completion of a 40MW battery storage expansion. The rescheduling aims to minimise the need for power rationing during the maintenance period, helping maintain grid stability in Sabah. Gas supply to Kimanis Power Plant and SPR Energy will be shut off during the works, with both plants temporarily switching to diesel. A new 100MW generation project by Sabah Electricity in Kimanis will also undergo pipeline connection work during this shutdown. Centralised price system to boost transparency

PENAMPANG: The Government will develop a centralised Price and Supply Repository System to monitor price trends and prevent manipulative practices in the market, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. He said the system, to be introduced under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), will provide a transparent data platform to detect abnormal price movements and support enforcement action against profiteering and cartel-like behaviour. 'This is a proactive step toward ensuring fairer market practices and greater price transparency across the supply chain, especially for essential goods,' he told reporters after officiating the Seminar Kenegaraan Malaysia Madani: Rancakkan Madani Sabah at ITTC Penampang. According to Armizan, the repository system will consolidate real-time information on pricing, supply volumes, and distribution to assist both consumers and regulators in making informed decisions. 'Through this system, enforcement agencies will be able to act more swiftly and decisively using data-driven evidence. It's a game-changer in combating unethical manipulation and protecting consumer interests,' he said. He added that the system will be developed through inter-ministerial cooperation and partnerships with industry players, including suppliers, retailers, and logistics operators. Armizan emphasised that the initiative reflects the Madani Government's commitment to protecting consumers while creating s healthier market environment that encourages genuine competition. It was better than usual as it was swarmed by people on a scale never seen before since the RM28 million facility was opened in 2001. Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii said there is no denying that for the five days it was sunshine over the gloomy local economy. 'While this is highly appreciated , what the island needs is something more than a temporary spell of boom or else this is akin to good weather followed by long drought,' he said. Wong reiterated that what would have a more lasting effect on the economy would be to restore the full duty free status of the island on cigarettes and abolish the restricted shopping of duty-free beer to only four cans for visitors. Anwar on Trump's call

Kota Kinabalu: PM Anwar spoke of Malaysia's growing international reputation in the wake of the nation's recent diplomatic success in mediating the border skirmish between Cambodia and Thailand. He said Prime Ministers agreed to hold talks in Kuala Lumpur after extensive diplomatic efforts involving multiple phone calls with world leaders including President Trump and China's President Xi Jinping. 'President Trump called me at 6.50am on Monday and the first thing he said was 'Prime Minister Anwar, fantastic job. Thank you for helping to resolve this conflict',' Anwar said. He also spoke about Malaysia's trade negotiations with the United States, particularly regarding tariffs that could impact the country's significant electronics and semiconductor exports worth RM200 billion annually. He said Malaysia successfully negotiated a reduction in tariffs from 25 per cent to 19 per cent, while maintaining firm positions on key issues including the Bumiputera Economic Policy and halal certification standards. 'I told Trump we are a trading nation, we believe in free trade. I do not act like some people saying 'Dear Mr President, I am sorry'. No, no. I represent Malaysia. 'The Malaysian people are proud, independent and sovereign and do not bow to anyone,' Anwar said. He also spoke about Malaysia Airlines' recent aircraft purchase agreements, including 30 Boeing aircraft from the United States and several Airbus planes from France, noting how these commercial deals support Malaysia's negotiating position in trade discussions. Addressing agricultural development specifically, Anwar said the government's focus is on fertile land utilisation and the Blue Economy concept under the 13th Malaysia Plan. He noted that 28 Farmers' Area Organisations currently oversee 842 farming units with 64,108 farmer members across the nation. 'Malaysia maintains its principled foreign policy stance, including our position on humanitarian issues in Gaza, while our government remains committed to treating all Malaysian children equally regardless of ethnicity,' he said.
