Reduced inspection frequency for low-voltage standby gensets in Sabah
Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos) has clarified that not all registered standby generator installations in residential premises require periodic checks by Competent Persons under the new Electricity Supply Enactment 2024. Ecos CEO Datuk Abdul Nasser bin Abdul Wahid ( pic ) said installations operating at low voltage and connected via switchgear rated below 100 amperes are exempt from such visits, whether in homes, commercial, or industrial premises. He added that low-voltage setups using switchgear rated between 100 and 300 amperes in residential and commercial premises will also not require mandatory visits. For industrial sites, including petrol stations, the required visits may be reduced from monthly to once every three months, while premises supplied at 11,000 volts may now only require monthly instead of fortnightly visits. Sabah charts green energy path at Energy Asia 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos) presented the state's energy transition roadmap at the recent Energy Asia 2025 conference, outlining key goals under the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040). Ecos CEO Datuk Abdul Nasser bin Abdul Wahid joined national energy leaders on a panel discussing Malaysia's sustainable growth and detailed Sabah's target of achieving 80 per cent renewable energy by 2050, up from its current 80 per cent gas dependence. Sabah's plans include Southeast Asia's largest Battery Energy Storage System (Bess) in Lahad Datu, operational by July 2025, alongside other projects to ensure a 25 per cent reserve margin by Q3 2025. Ecos, empowered by recent State energy laws, is also pushing for universal rural electrification, carbon neutrality by 2050, and improved reliability through strategic power plant development and interconnection with Sarawak. Sabah Energy Commission backs state's TVET drive with electrical competency certification

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 15 training institutions across Sabah have been accredited by the Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos) to run Electrical Competency Programmes across various categories. The certification was handed over on May 19 during the launch of the Sabah TVET Council, witnessed by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya who represented the Chief Minister. Ecos chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said the move demonstrated their commitment to support the state government's efforts to promote Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a preferred path for local youths. 'This accreditation is expected to boost industry confidence in the quality of TVET graduates from Sabah, thereby improving their employability and contributing to the state's economic development,' he said. Ecos also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the state-run Technical and Commercial Training Institute (ILTP) under the TVET Institution Adoption Programme, which will focus on competency development in energy-related sectors such as electricity, gas and renewable energy. One of the key collaborations under the MOU is the development of a Gas Installer Competency Programme at ILTP aimed at increasing the number of certified gas personnel in Sabah. ECoS will provide technical expertise and advisory support in curriculum development, training modules and facility requirements. The ILTP will also be gradually upgraded to run Electrical Competency Programmes in the Electrical Machine Supervisor (up to B4 level) and Electrical Wiring (up to PW4 level) categories, under Ecos technical guidance. Nasser said both parties would work closely to enhance the employability of ILTP graduates and Ecos would serve as the main reference body to ensure ongoing compliance and accreditation. The 16 accredited institutions include UMS Investment Holdings, UTM-MPRC Institute for Oil and Gas, Institut Kemahiran Mara Kota Kinabalu, ILP Kota Kinabalu, IKBN Kinarut, GiatMara centres in Semporna, Kota Belud, Sandakan, Tawau, Kinabatangan, Keningau, Gaya and Limbawang, Akademi Binaan Malaysia Sandakan, Institut Latihan Teknik & Perdagangan, ILP Sandakan, and IEM Training Academy Sdn Bhd.

No new fees, just continuation of existing power regulations: Ecos

Ecos CEO Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid ( pic ) said registration is essential for verifying safety through documentation checks, professional testing, and inspections where needed. Advertisement He assured the public that Ecos only charges a single annual fee based on installation capacity, ranging from RM30 to RM3,000, maintaining the previous fee structure under the former federal regulator. Nasser dismissed viral social media claims of high charges, stating that the quoted figures are likely fees from private consultants, not from Ecos, which functions solely as a regulator.
