Karjan Toll Plaza: Toll plazas are an essential source of income for the roadways ministry as the revenue procured is used for developing roads and other critical infrastructure liked bridges, tunnels as well as maintenance of already existing highways. But do you know that the highest-revenue earning toll plaza in the country is not located in any major city of town, but a tiny village in Gujarat which is home to less than 2000 people? Most profitable toll plaza
The Karjan Toll Plaza, located in Bharthana village in Gujarat's Vadodara district is the highest-earning toll plaza in India, raking in an annual revenue of around Rs 500 crore. The toll booth is located on the crucial NH-48, the only highway that connects Delhi and Mumbai, and reaching up to Chennai in Tamil Nadu, connecting the country's north, west, and southern states.
The NH-48 connects automobile hubs in Tamil Nadu and Haryana, and serves as a gateway to industries cities in Gujarat and the Dahej Port in the Gulf of Kambhat. The Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and the Delhi-Jaipur Highway are located in its northern part, while the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Highway lies in the west of the crucial highway. How Karjan Toll Plaza became a high-revenue earner?
The Karjan Toll Plaza is located on the industrial route between Vadodara and Mumbai, and with Gujarat being a major chemical and petrochemical manufacturing hub, with most units located in the state's central and southern parts which can be accessed only through the Karjan toll booth.
Owing to this, and the movement of goods from Dahej port, over 65% of the vehicles passing through the toll plaza are commercial, including cargo containers, trucks, and tankers, which account for higher revenue compared to private vehicles.
Built in 2009, the Karjan Toll Plaza, is managed by Prakash Asphalting's and Toll Highways (PATH) India Ltd on behalf of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
'The toll plaza has been doing extremely well for many years now. The industries in Gujarat use the route to transport their goods to the ports of Mumbai. Its serves as connecting linking between the north and the south,' says P R Patelia, Scretary, Road and Building Department, Gujarat . FASTag pilot site
The Karjan toll plaza famously served as the test site for NHAI's FASTag pilot project, which formed the basis of the service being launched nationwide.''This has been one of our star toll plazas for a long time. In 2017, the daily toll collection at this plaza had crossed Rs 1 crore,' said SP Sharma, former NHAI General Manager and Project Director.
The toll plaza is operates 24/7 with 190 employees working in three shifts under four managers. Around 80 employees are tasked with collecting toll from vehicles, while 33 employees are deployed in the lanes to help the drivers.
Five employees work in IT, while the rest are tasked with cleaning and maintenance work, according to authorities.
Interestingly, despite the massive rush it witnesses on a daily basis, the Karjan toll plaza rarely witnesses any traffic jams. There are 11 toll lanes on either side of the plaza and FASTag is used for quick checkouts.
Notably, the Karjan Toll Plaza made headlines 13 years ago when former BJP MP Vitthal Radadiya pointed a gun at a toll booth worker following an argument.

KTM 390 Adventure X Updated With Cruise Control And Riding Modes In India

KTM has introduced the updated version of the KTM 390 Adventure X with advanced features to further bolster the sale of the model launched in India in February. Kraftfahrzeuge Trunkenpolz Mattighofen, popularly known as KTM, has launched an updated version of the 390 Adventure X, packed with advanced features aimed at enhancing the riding experience. The latest iteration now comes equipped with cruise control, cornering traction control, and cornering ABS, along with three riding modes – Street, Rain, and Off-road. Although the bike's overall design remains the same as the model introduced in India in February 2025, the major upgrades lie in its functionality. The refreshed 390 Adventure X now features new switchgear, including a dedicated button for cruise control and a toggle switch to adjust the cruising speed. Under the hood, the motorcycle continues to sport the 399cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, delivering 45 BHP and 39 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed gearbox, ensuring the same performance KTM fans have come to expect. Equipped with a telescopic fork in the front and a mono-shock in the rear, the updated 390 Adventure X rides on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels wrapped in dual-purpose tyres and has disc brakes at both ends in its braking system. The KTM 390 Adventure X update will maintain the on-road characteristics of the previous model while handling off-road conditions better. The addition of different riding modes offers bike riders an enhanced experience, providing various throttle maps depending on the rider's needs. The riders can expect better control in different conditions and on different types of terrains. KTM is also offering a switchgear from the standard model to switch between modes. Bike riders will get the cruise control button and can also use the toggle switch for speed control. Indian bike riders, who have been enjoying the KTM 390 Adventure X since the start of the year, can expect a pocket-friendly switch to the enhanced version of the model that is available at a starting price of Rs 3.03 lakh (ex-showroom), only Rs 12,000 higher than the previous version. When launched in February, the bike came with an initial price of Rs 2.91 lakhs (ex-showroom). Through the upgraded model, KTM India is hoping to solidify its presence in the Indian auto market scene and rival some of the other leading manufacturing brands available in the country. view comments First Published: July 10, 2025, 11:39 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Make (more) in India: India switches to factory settings for niche electronics

TIL Creatives Representative Image Kolkata: After iPhones, smart televisions and microwave ovens, India is now scaling up manufacturing of more niche electronic products such as robotic vacuum cleaners, coffee makers, built-in refrigerators and air fryers, which, till recently, were fully imported. The development, according to industry executives, is driven by the government's expanding list of electronic products whose factories need certification under the quality control orders (QCO) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) that are meant to control imports from China and other places, as well as promote local production. Most of these specialised products have come under QCO in the past eight to nine months. Till recently, most consumer goods firms argued that the market size for these categories was so small that local production did not make sense. 'BIS norms have been a big trigger, with more and more brands — including premium ones — exploring local production for small appliances despite small market size,' said Atul Lall, managing director of Dixon Technologies. 'It's a nice business opportunity.' Earlier this week, Dixon signed an agreement with Eureka Forbes to manufacture robotic vacuum cleaners, a category with a market size of just about Rs 700 is the largest home-grown electronics contract manufacturer. Europe's Liebherr has set up a plant for built-in customised refrigerators in Aurangabad, with production commencing in April, despite domestic annual sales of only 14,000-15,000 Agarwal, India managing director (sales) at Liebherr Appliances, said that implementation of the BIS norms for refrigerators from this year served as a wake-up call to set up a factory locally, further aided by the premiumisation wave. 'We were importing from Germany but getting the factory certified is a tedious process. We also believe the market will grow to 1 lakh units in five years. So a local plant made a business case and will reduce import lead time,' he Greaves Consumer Electricals' annual report said it will prioritise local sourcing this fiscal. Havells India said in its annual report it will further support localisation of products to reduce import dependence, from about 8% of its total sourcing in the previous financial year, having scaled it down from around 15% of total sourcing in of QCOs has opened up more attractive categories, according to Ajay Singhania, MD of contract manufacturer Epack Durable, while the business for more mature categories such as mixer grinders has been either flat or growing at a nominal rate of 3-4% annually. The opportunity includes 72 categories, such as air fryers, electric kettles and hair dryers, most of which were earlier fully imported, he said. 'We are taking a lead in localising these categories and meeting the requirements of most of the marquee customers,' he told analysts last firms imported these products in bulk in the past few months before the QCO came into executives said that while the market size may be small for standalone categories, it's altogether a business opportunity of more than Rs 12,000-13,000 crore. To put it in perspective, the market size of air-conditioners alone is more than Rs 40,000 crore and that of smartphones is more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore. Another leading contract manufacturer, PG Electroplast, began small appliance production seven to eight years ago, but had to discontinue it as the opportunity was very small at the time, said its managing director (operations) Vikas Gupta. 'But with the BIS norms, we are now relooking at it as a lot of brands are approaching us,' he said. The government has, over the past few years, expanded the compulsory BIS QCO certification to products such ACs, washing machines, refrigerators, ceiling fans, plugs, switches and cables, and very few overseas factories have received the BIS certification.
