71 newly constructed govt degree colleges to start classes for 2025-26 academic session

A key highlight of these new colleges is the full implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Along with two colleges in Prayagraj and one in Kaushambi, other districts include Agra and Jhansi (nine colleges each), Lucknow (12), Bareilly (13), Meerut (10) and Gorakhpur (four). In all, 1,562 posts have received in-principal approval for direct recruitment, including 1,065 appointments of assistant professor.
According to officials, more than 40 of these colleges were already formally handed over to the Directorate of Higher Education by implementing agencies. Efforts are now underway to ensure all necessary resources—such as furniture, lab equipment, and infrastructure—are in place ahead of the academic launch.Director of higher education, Amit Bhardwaj, confirmed the move, stating, "Under the Chief Minister's directive, 71 new govt degree colleges will commence operations in the 2025–26 session. The process of appointing teaching and non-teaching staff is in the final stages, and all necessary preparations are being made." In total, 1,562 posts received in-principle approval for direct recruitment, including 1,065 assistant professor positions. Formal appointment orders are expected soon. Meanwhile, classes will be conducted by deputing faculty from existing institutions until permanent staff are in place. Unlike many of the 172 existing govt degree colleges in the state, which typically offer only one or two academic streams, these new institutions will offer courses across all three major streams: science, commerce, and arts. Officials emphasised that this interdisciplinary approach will allow students, such as those studying science, to explore subjects like Sanskrit, in line with NEP's vision.Among the new institutions, two are located in Prayagraj—one women's college in Parasinpur Sikandra (Phulpur block) and another in the Meja block. Additionally, one college is under construction in Sirathu tehsil of Kaushambi district. Other districts witnessing significant expansion include Agra and Jhansi (nine colleges), Lucknow (12), Bareilly (13), Meerut (10), and Gorakhpur (four). Initially considered for a public-private partnership (PPP) model, the state govt eventually decided to operate these colleges directly.

ECI has decided to conduct intensive electoral revision in assembly election-bound states and it is highly suspicious that BJP is trying to reduce the minority voters and to increase their voters which is against democracy. This State Executive Committee meeting strongly condemns this.' Amit Shah's recent comments on the English language were deemed 'malicious' by the TVK state executive committee, describing them as a direct assault on Tamil Nadu's two-language policy. The Tamil Vettri Kazhagham mentioned that the party will never accept the imposition of Hindi and the Sanskrit language on Tamil Nadu. The party also condemned the Election Commission of India's decision to conduct electoral revision and stated that the main purpose of it is to reduce minority votes in the state. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday (July 4, 2025) said while there was nothing wrong in expecting people to speak Marathi in the state, it was unacceptable to resort to violence for its insistence and that one cannot be "obstinate" about it. He also warned of legal action against those taking the law into their hands over the issue. The CM's remarks came in response to a recent incident in which Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers assaulted a food stall owner in Thane district's Bhayandar for not speaking Marathi, and a businessman in Mumbai issuing a statement declaring he would not speak Marathi despite having lived in the city for many years. "You can ask people to speak Marathi in Maharashtra, but you cannot be obstinate about Marathi," Mr. Fadnavis told reporters on the premises of the Vidhan Bhavan, the state legislature complex here. "Marathi people cannot have so much hatred against other languages," he added. Cautioning against linguistic chauvinism, he said, "Even I am Marathi. There are (Marathi) people working in other states. If they get similar treatment (there), then it is not fair. Whoever takes the law into their hands will face legal action." He criticised the selective outrage over languages, and said, "I sometimes wonder how these people embrace English, but create controversy over Hindi. What sort of thought process is this?" Calling for constructive promotion of the language, Mr. Fadnavis said, "If you are truly proud of Marathi, then speak Marathi. Encourage others to speak Marathi. Start classes to teach Marathi. Why do you send your children to schools where Marathi is taught as the third language? Send them to Marathi medium schools." According to him, the police have taken action against MNS workers who manhandled a businessman in Thane who could not speak in Marathi. Speaking about the withdrawal of two government resolutions (GRs) linked to the implementation of the three-language policy amid a growing chorus against the introduction of the Hindi language in Maharashtra schools from classes 1 to 5, Fadnavis said the opposition was being opportunistic. "The two parties seem very happy with the cancellation, but people are aware that when Uddhav Thackeray was the chief minister, it was his government that accepted the NEP, formed a committee and implemented the same decisions," he said. "We have now formed a committee that will look into all the aspects. Whatever is good for our students, the committee will recommend, and we will implement it," he said. On Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde raising "Jai Gujarat" slogan at an event attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Pune, Fadnavis defended his colleague. "He was attending an event of the Gujarati community because he was invited there. His statement was in their context. It doesn't mean he loves Gujarat more than Maharashtra," the CM said. He pointed out that such interpretations were short-sighted. "A few years ago, Sharad Pawar had gone to Chikodi in Karnataka and raised the slogans of 'Jai Maharashtra, Jai Karnataka'. Does that mean he loves Karnataka more than Maharashtra?" Mr. Fadnavis asked. "This kind of narrow view towards the Marathi language is not good. Marathi language and Marathi people have contributed immensely across fields. There were prominent Marathi personalities in our country's freedom movement as well," he added. Speaking about the status of the proposed Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway, the CM said, "Most of the land-related issues have been resolved. Some farmers in Sangli have raised objections. We are considering a realignment in Kolhapur. The opposition to the project now is purely political."

On July 3, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor turned politician Vijay met family members of Ajith Kumar, who allegedly died during police interrogation in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu earlier in the month. Vijay demanded a High Court-monitored probe into the alleged custodial death of Ajith Kumar in Sivaganga district, while holding Chief Minister MK Stalin, who is also the state's home minister, responsible for it. "In the Tiruppuvanam Ajithkumar custodial death case, a special investigation team must be formed under the direct supervision of the High Court to conduct an inquiry and deliver a swift judgment!" the TVK chief wrote in a post on X. He claimed that the police department, under the "direct supervision of MK Stalin", acts in a "cruel, utterly inhumane and unjust manner towards ordinary citizens." Vijay also alleged that the state government initially shielded the accused and only took action after the High Court intervened. "This incident starkly highlights the extent to which the Tamil Nadu Police Department, operating under the direct supervision of the Home Minister, Mr. M.K. Stalin, acts in a cruel, utterly inhumane, and unjust manner toward ordinary citizens, functioning as an unethical institution. It is widely known that the Tamil Nadu government initially tried to protect the culprits," Vijay's post read.
