Maharashtra CM gives nod for recruitment of 788 teachers, 2,242 non-teaching staff in public universities in state
In a major faculty recruitment in higher education in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has approved the recruitment of 788 teaching and 2,242 non-teaching posts in non-agricultural public universities across the state. Additionally, the state government has sanctioned the recruitment of 5,012 assistant professors in grant-in-aid colleges under the Directorate of Higher Education. The decision was announced after a high-level review meeting chaired by CM Fadnavis at Vidhan Bhavan, focusing on key issues under the Department of Higher and Technical Education. This is the first major recruitment announcement since 2022, when initial steps were taken but later halted following the Governor's directive. The approval paves the way for restarting the recruitment process for government-sanctioned posts in public universities and in aided colleges that had been stalled since last year following a stay imposed by the then Governor. In late 2024, the Governor's office had suggested exploring the possibility of conducting faculty recruitment through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) or establishing an independent recruitment board. However, this proposal was later rejected by the University Grants Commission (UGC). But the ongoing confusion caused lack of clarity leading to delay in the hiring process and faculty recruitment remained on hold. 'With today's decision, it is now clear that faculty recruitment will proceed as per UGC regulations,' an official from the state's Higher Education Department stated. 'The filling of long-pending vacancies will significantly enhance the quality of higher education, in line with the implementation of the National Education Policy,' added the official. Further, the government has also placed strong emphasis on strengthening technical education. The Chief Minister approved 105 teaching posts and one teacher-equivalent post at the Laxminarayan Institute of Technology (LIT) in Nagpur. A revised staffing structure for 603 posts at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University has been cleared. Whereas 100 percent recruitment has also been approved at premier institutions such as VJTI Mumbai and Shri Guru Gobind Singh Engineering College, Nanded.

Nagaland to award 41,793 ST students with post-matric scholarships
KOHIMA: A total of 41,793 Scheduled Tribe (ST) students from Nagaland have been identified as beneficiaries under the Post Matric Scholarship (PMS) scheme for the academic year 2024-25, requiring an estimated Rs 56.38 crore of funds, officials said on Tuesday. However, due to the current availability of Rs 30.70 crore, the disbursement will be carried out in phases. Addressing a press conference at the Directorate of Higher Education here, Keduosielie Keyho and Tol Pucho, both Officers on Special Duty (OSD) for Scholarships, stated that the first phase of payment will cover 22,000 students, which is about 52.64 per cent of the total beneficiaries. These students will receive their entire scholarship amount as a one-time payment, unlike previous years when payments were made in instalments, said Keyho. The scheme is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) with a 90:10 funding pattern between the Centre and State governments. Of the total applicants, 30,451 have been system-authenticated, while 11,342 students remain unauthenticated due to non-seeding of Aadhaar number with bank accounts, he said. The officer said that auto-generated SMS messages have been sent to these students with instructions to resolve the issue while the remaining eligible students will be included in the next phase of disbursement once additional funds are received. For the first time, the scholarship disbursement will be made through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), moving away from the earlier Public Financial Management System (PFMS), he said. "Under NSP, instalment-based payments are not permitted. Instead, scholarships will be paid in one full instalment per beneficiary, though in phases," Keyho said. He said that this shift aligns with the Government of India's mandate for end-to-end digitisation, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and direct transfer of benefits to the rightful recipients.
