Ex-Arsenal Ghana international Thomas Partey faces rape, sexual assault allegations

LONDON, July 5 — Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey was on Friday charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault after complaints by three women, UK police said.
The charges against the 32-year-old Ghana international relate to alleged offences that took place between 2021 and 2022, the Metropolitan Police force said in a statement.
They 'follow an investigation by detectives, which commenced in February 2022' following the first complaint, police said.
Lawyers for Partey, 32, said in a statement he 'denies all the charges against him'.
'He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation,' said lawyer Jenny Wiltshire.
'He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.
'Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further,' she added.
Partey, who was charged four days after leaving the North London club, will appear in court in central London on August 5.
Police said the rape charges related to two women, with the sexual assault complaint relating to a third.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, whose team is leading the investigation, said their priority was providing 'support to the women who have come forward'.
And he urged anyone 'impacted by the case' or 'who has information' to contact police. — AFP

Former Arsenal soccer player Partey charged with five counts of rape

Thomas Partey, who formerly played for English Premier League soccer club Arsenal, has been charged with rape and sexual assault, London's Metropolitan Police said on Friday. Partey, a Ghana international, was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, with the charges relating to three women and the offences reported to have taken place between 2021 and 2022, the statement said. Partey's management did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He is due to appear at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court on Aug. 5. Partey, 32, was signed by Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for 50 million euros (US$59 million) in October 2020 and became a key member of Arsenal's first team. He was first arrested in July 2022, though he was not named at the time and continued to play for Arsenal while investigations were ongoing.

Part-time hotel worker pleads guilty to raping Australian woman

S Prasanth requested time to appoint a lawyer to represent him. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A part-time hotel worker pleaded guilty in the sessions court in George Town, Penang, today to charges of raping and committing unnatural sex with an Australian woman. S Prasanth, 25, who made the plea before judge Juraidah Abbas, requested time to appoint a lawyer to represent him, Bernama reported. Prasanth is charged with raping the woman in a car and putting her in fear by pointing a metal scissors at her at a cemetery in Mount Erskine between 5.20am and 6am on June 28. The charge, under Section 376(2)(b) of the Penal Code, provides imprisonment of up to 30 years and whipping upon conviction. He is also charged with committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature without consent with the woman at the same time and location. The charge, under Section 377C of the Penal Code, provides for imprisonment of five to 20 years and whipping. The prosecution, led by Penang prosecution director Nordin Ismail and deputy public prosecutor Lee Jun Keong, did not offer any bail because of the seriousness of the offence and sensitivity surrounding bilateral relations between Malaysia and Australia. 'We do not want this matter to give a bad impression to foreign tourists who come to Malaysia. We cannot tolerate such offences,' said Nordin. The court did not allow bail and set July 31 for mention for the submission of documents and appointment of counsel.
