Jane Street SEBI ban: US quant trading firm Jane Street has approached the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to lift the trading restrictions after depositing Rs 4,843.58 crore in an escrow account.
Following the interim order in the market manipulation case, Sebi confirmed that Jane Street has credited the specified amount to an escrow account, with a lien marked in the regulator's favour, according to an ET report.
The firm has submitted a formal request to Sebi, seeking removal of specific conditional restrictions imposed under the interim order, subsequent to establishing the escrow account as per the regulatory requirements.
The regulatory authority is presently reviewing the appeal in line with the stipulations outlined in the interim order, the report said.
Sebi has affirmed its dedication to maintaining proper procedures and safeguarding the securities market's integrity.
What is the Jane Street ban about?
SEBI levelled serious allegations against Jane Street, stating they orchestrated a calculated scheme to manipulate India's derivatives market. The regulatory body discovered that the firm accumulated profits of approximately Rs 36,500 crore through systematic market manipulation activities.
According to investigations quoted in the report, the organisation implemented a strategy of aggressive purchasing of Nifty Bank component stocks and futures in early trading hours, leading to artificial price inflation.
Subsequently, they would liquidate these positions through concentrated selling activities later in the day, triggering price declines. These synchronised transactions were executed to influence the index at crucial intervals to benefit their substantial options holdings.

Jane Street ban: Why has SEBI barred US-based trading firm, which made multi-thousand crore profit, from India's securities markets? Explained
The regulatory investigation revealed that Jane Street maintained "consistently the largest risks in 'cash equivalent' terms in F&O, particularly on index option expiry days." The authority highlighted that "what sets apart the trading pattern of the JS Group as prima facie being manipulative, is the intensity and sheer scale of their intervention in the underlying component stock and futures markets."
SEBI's probe revealed substantial figures demonstrating Jane Street's extensive activities in Indian markets. Throughout the investigation period, Jane Street accumulated total earnings of Rs 36,502.12 crore across various market segments.
The trading behaviour indicates that Jane Street utilised cash equities, stock futures, and index futures segments to influence market prices, sustaining losses in these areas whilst generating substantial profits through options trading.
The revelation has significantly affected Indian markets, impacting capital market infrastructure shares, including BSE and the non-listed NSE. The derivative trading volumes have experienced a considerable reduction of approximately 20% following the SEBI directive.
During Thursday's weekly options expiry, traditionally the most active trading session, the turnover decreased by more than 21%, falling to Rs 472.5 lakh crore from Rs 601.2 lakh crore the previous week, the report said.

Sell gold, buy silver? Why poor man's gold is quietly becoming the real treasure

Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads After making tons of money playing the safe haven trade, gold bugs are now shifting to silver in a dramatic bet that the white metal's time has finally come. Silver ETFs have surged around 21% in the last three months, crushing gold ETFs' modest 5% return as speculators abandon the stretched yellow metal for what could be the next mega trend in precious metals - poor man's silver surge hit fever pitch on Monday when MCX silver September futures smashed to a lifetime high of Rs 114,875 per kg. In international markets, spot silver rocketed 3.9% to $38.46 per ounce last week, hitting its highest level since September 2011. The rally was fueled by intensifying safe-haven demand after US President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs, including a 35% duty on Canadian imports and blanket levies of 15% to 20% on most other trade partners starting August 1."Now it's not a question of should you own silver or about how much do you own," said Apurva Sheth, Head of Market Perspectives & Research at SAMCO Securities, highlighting the urgency gripping silver white metal's explosive move comes as gold veterans sound the retreat. Gautam Shah of Goldilocks Premium Research, who rode gold from $1800 to $3500, abandoned his position last month. "Most of the positives were priced in and it has gone into a longish consolidation phase which is going to continue. But over the last few months we have been very-very bullish on silver," Shah confidence in silver's potential is staggering. "If you have to take a 12- to 15-month view, I think $43 I would say is a medium-term target and $50 on silver is probably a slightly more longer-term target," Shah shift reflects more than just profit-taking. Speculators are showing a stronger preference for silver over gold, likely due to the stretched gold-to-silver ratio and the prospect of silver prices catching up to gold's recent gains. Silver also benefits from supportive supply-demand dynamics, with the global market facing its fifth straight year of deficit. Motilal Oswal Financial Services , which had been bullish on gold since Rs 30,000 levels targeting Rs 50,000, called it quits earlier this month. "We've witnessed gains exceeding 30%, and historical data over the past 25 years shows that Comex gold has never achieved more than 32% returns in a single year," the brokerage noted, adding that "some signs of market fatigue are also emerging at these higher levels."The supply threat adds another explosive element to silver's story. "Silver is already in short fall. If US or other nations were to announce similar tariffs on silver or even worse ban exports like China has done in case of rare earth minerals then it could send silver prices to stratospheric levels," warned backdrop couldn't be more supportive of precious metals. The dollar index has dropped close to 10% over the last six months and about 10% since the beginning of this calendar year, according to Emkay Wealth Management. "This has already been priced in the gold prices in the international markets, but what we need to see is a further fall in the dollar caused by official rate cuts and a fall in market yields," the wealth manager highlighted two key factors driving precious metals: the direction of US interest rates and an anticipated decline in the US dollar. "Given the economic conditions and the relatively lower inflation numbers, the likelihood of the Fed going in for a rate cut or two before the end of this calendar year is very high," the firm the new budgeted spending to the tune of $4.60 trillion could complicate matters. "The situation could become murkier because the resultant borrowings may put upward pressure on the yields," Emkay now, silver appears to be the precious metal of choice for those seeking the next big move. As Shah puts it: "If you are booking profits in gold, this might be a good time to top up on silver. Looks like a large mega trend is coming for this commodity."The question for investors is no longer whether to own precious metals, but which one will deliver the bigger payoff in the months ahead.: Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own. Landmark Cars stock jumps 6% as B&K Sec initiates coverage, 60% upside seen

Landmark Cars share price: Shares of premium automotive retailer Landmark Cars were in focus on Monday, July 14, 2025, rising as much as 6 per cent to hit an intraday high of ₹539.65 after domestic brokerage B&K Securities initiated coverage on the stock with a bullish outlook, driven by strong growth potential and improving profitability over the next two years. The brokerage initiated coverage on Landmark Cars with a 'Buy' rating and a target price of ₹820 per share, implying a 60 per cent upside from Friday's closing levels. At 3 PM, the stock was trading at ₹531, up 4.5 per cent from its previous day's close of ₹507.85. In comparison, the benchmark NSE Nifty50 was trading lower by 73.55 points or 0.3 per cent at 25,080.3 levels. According to analysts at B& Securities, while Landmark Cars' proforma and reported revenues grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11 per cent and 9 per cent, respectively, from FY23 to FY25, the company's Ebitda, PBT, and PAT declined by 3 per cent, 20 per cent, and 55 per cent, respectively. However, the company's sales growth of 11 per cent was double the Indian passenger vehicle sales CAGR of 5 per cent over FY23 to FY25. During FY25, the older outlets and workshops contributed ₹70 crore to PBT, and the newly opened ones incurred PBT-level losses of ₹40 crore. As these facilities ramp up, they are expected to break even starting Q1FY26, with most turning profitable by the end of FY26, the brokerage said. The company has also tied up with three new brands - Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), Kia and MG Motors - over the past two years. Landmark Cars is the first multi-brand, multi-location auto dealer operating in the premium and luxury car segment in India with 70 showrooms and 61 workshops as of FY25. "While the after-sales mix for old brands is 17 per cent for the new brands, it is 9 per cent. As the after-sales mix improves for these new brands and new outlets scale up, we expect the margin of the company to improve from 5.5 per cent to 7.5 per cent over FY25-27E," B&K Securities said. Analysts at B&K Securities believe that Landmark Cars remains a highly moated business with pan-India reach, high switching costs for OEMs, and market leadership with many OEMs, including Mercedes Benz, BYD, Jeep, Volkswagen, Honda and MG Motors. While the high capital requirements prevent smaller players from entering this segment, the intricate nature of the business is driving consolidation in the industry.

MP: Harda tensions ease as curbs lifted, Karni Sena to stick to peaceful protest

In Harda, Madhya Pradesh, the dust appears to be settling after a weekend of unrest sparked by a confrontation between Karni Sena activists and police. The town, which witnessed widespread protests and heavy security deployment, is gradually returning to normalcy. District Collector Aditya Singh has lifted 163 prohibitory orders and authorised the release of those arrested during the 'chakka jam' demonstration. Despite these steps, local authorities remain cautious, noting that tensions could resurface as community leaders and supporters continue to express dissent. The atmosphere, while calmer, remains under close watch. The unrest began after Ashish Rajput, a Karni Sena official, filed a complaint alleging a fraud of Rs 18 lakh in a diamond deal involving three individuals. Police arrested one of the accused, Mohit Verma, and attempted to present him in court on Saturday. However, around 40 Karni Sena activists gathered outside the court, demanding custody of the accused and obstructing legal proceedings. The situation escalated, prompting police to resort to a lathi-charge and arrest four individuals, including district president Sunil Rajput and complainant Ashish Rajput. In a message posted on his X handle, Karni Sena national president Jeevan Singh Sherpur stated that the movement against injustice would continue, but without disrupting the lives of ordinary citizens. Superintendent of Police Abhinav Chouksey defended the police response through a video message on X handle, stating that the demand to hand over the accused was unconstitutional and that mild force was used only after activists misbehaved with constables at the police station. He emphasised that the incident stemmed from a personal grievance and should not have been linked to any organisation. The crackdown triggered widespread protests across the district, prompting the administration to impose Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (formerly Section 144) and seal Harda's borders. More than 50 arrests were made, and additional police forces were deployed from neighbouring districts, including Betul and Khandwa. On Monday morning, four senior Karni Sena leaders, including national president Jivan Singh Sherpur, were released conditionally in the presence of SDM Kumar Shanu Devdiya. Sherpur was released outside the district boundary after giving a written assurance not to participate in further demonstrations. District Collector Aditya Singh lifted 163 prohibitory orders late Sunday, signalling a cautious easing of restrictions. Despite this, the atmosphere remains volatile, with reports of Rajput community members mobilising across the state. Congress leaders have condemned the police action, calling it a violation of democratic rights and demanding an impartial inquiry. As social media continues to amplify the unrest, authorities are urging restraint and vigilance. The administration has submitted a detailed report to the Home Department in Bhopal, while the Karni Sena has announced plans to continue its agitation, with a new date to be decided.
