Ride along Vizag Beach Road on double-decker bus to be a reality soon

The Hindu29-05-2025
Ever dreamt of travelling along the scenic Beach Road from RK Beach to Bheemunipatnam in a double-decker open-top bus, covering the pristine coastline on one side and lush green hills on the other?
Well, it may become a reality soon as the Greater Visakhapatnam Smart City Corporation Limited (GVSCCL), in collaboration with the Tourism Department, is planning to introduce double-decker bus services, covering key tourist hotspots in Visakhapatnam.
The Ashok Leyland Group donated a double-decker bus to the Andhra Pradesh government to promote tourism in the State.
IT and HRD Minister Nara Lokesh has ensured that the bus is allocated to Visakhapatnam, recognising the strong tourism potential of the city.
Tender floated
Building on this, the GVSCCL, with the support of the Tourism Department, is planning to procure two more double-decker buses by using the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. Tenders (Request for Proposal) have already been floated for this purpose and the last date for accepting the proposals is May 31.
Chief Engineer G. Siva Prasad Raju states that the new service will operate on a 'hop-on, hop-off' model, providing tourists with an innovative and flexible way to explore the city's tourist attractions.
'For example, a tourist can board the bus at RK Beach and get off at Tenneti Park to spend some time there and hop onto another bus to reach Rushikonda. The buses will operate on a circuit, with high frequency to suit passengers' needs, allowing tourists to explore the city at their own pace,' he explains.
Of the three proposed bus services, two will feature closed-top decks, while one will have an open-top design. The decision has been taken, keeping in the view of the local weather conditions and preferences of tourists.
The authorities are yet to finalise the routes and fare structures. The initial plan focuses on the Beach Road stretch from RK Beach to Bheemunipatnam, which features a string of tourist spots including Kursura Submarine Museum, Visakha Museum, Kailasagiri Ropeway, Tenneti Park, Jodugullapalem View Point, Rushikonda Beach, and Erra Matti Dibbalu. Future expansions may include other popular locations such as the Simhachalam temple and One Town.

Tourism caravans to hit Andhra Pradesh roads soon

For those yearning to escape the monotony and explore life off the beaten path, caravanning offers an ideal escape. Recognising the growing demand for experiential travel, the government is now formulating a policy to facilitate the operation of caravans across the State to promote sustainable tourism and unlock new avenues for adventure seekers. The policy is currently under legal vetting and officials of the Tourism Department say it may take a couple of weeks for its approval by the State Cabinet before these vehicles, equipped with luxury and comfort, begin to crisscross Andhra Pradesh roads. A tourism caravan, flagged off by the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, on the sidelines of a tourism conclave recently was the cynosure of all eyes. Stepping into the world of comfort and style that rivals hotel suites, visitors were greeted by plush interiors with thoughtfully designed layouts. Soft, upholstered seating lined the lounge area, convertible into cozy sleeping arena, while ambient lighting cast a warm, inviting glow. A compact kitchenette, a wash basin and a ceramic toilet, besides a genset to power the caravan when parked facilitate smooth functioning of the mobile campers. One of the most delightful features of a caravan is the awning, the extension that transforms a simple stop into a comfortable, open-air living space. 'With a quick setup, the awning will create a shaded, weather-protected area right outside your door, allowing you to enjoy the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort,' said J. Kalyan Kumar Reddy, founder and chairman of Hyderabad Luxe Caravans, a company that designs and builds caravans. A native of Nandyal district, Mr. Reddy's firm is building two vehicles to be operated in Andhra Pradesh, in collaboration with the Tourism Department in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. Each vehicle is a 10-seater and has room for seven people to sleep. While final modalities of the project are yet to be worked out between the Tourism Department and Hyderabad Luxe Caravans, Mr. Reddy says depending on the demand, more vehicles would be added at a later stage. Tourism officials said that the first two vehicles would start operating around Suryalanka Beach in Bapatla district and Gandikota in Kadapa district by August. 'The plan is to introduce 20 such upscale touring vehicles in the next four years,' said an official from the Tourism Department.

‘A Destination You'll Never Leave': Kerala Turns Stranded UK Jet Into Tourism Pitch

Last Updated: Kerala's tourism department made a light-hearted remark on a British F-35 stealth fighter stranded in Thiruvananthapuram to promote state tourism. The British F-35 fighter jet stranded in Kerala for several days provided a unique opportunity for the state to promote its tourism, with a light-hearted remark saying Kerala was a destination people don't want to depart from. In a post on X, Kerala's Tourism Department said, 'Kerala, the destination you'll never want to leave. Thank you, The Fauxy." It shared a picture of a 'review" by the UK F-35B jet, which said, 'Kerala is such an amazing place, I don't want to leave. Definitely recommend." The post left social media users amused. 'No wonder it refuses to leave now- bro found peace, toddy, and banana chips," wrote one user. 'Give it Parotta and Thattukada fried chicken, it will never go back," another netizen wrote. 'Maybe try putting some coconut water in it instead of fuel, that might fix it," a third person wrote. F-35 Fighter Jet Stranded In Kerala The F-35 fighter jet, worth over $110 million and known to be one of the most advanced fighters globally, made the emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram airport on June 14 and remained there for 16 days, unable to return to HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier. Days after the aircraft's emergency landing, the Indian Air Force said it was providing all necessary support for the 'rectification and subsequent return" of the aircraft. The High Commission said that the aircraft, which landed at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport on June 14, developed engineering issues whilst on the ground. The UK has accepted the offer by the Indian authorities to move the aircraft to the hangar, the spokesperson said. The F-35B is the only fifth generation fighter jet with short takeoff and vertical landing capabilities, making it ideal for operating from smaller decks, austere bases and ships. First Published:
