Netflix just added a psychological thriller movie full of surprising twists — and it's one of Sigourney Weaver's best roles
I'm not surprised people jumped on 'Copycat' since it has all the ingredients subscribers often look for: big stars like Sigourney Weaver, Holly Hunter and Dermot Mulroney, and a chilling serial killer story that might just get under your skin.
This psychological thriller follows a criminal psychologist struggling with agoraphobia after a traumatic attack, who teams up with a detective to catch a serial killer replicating the methods of infamous murderers. While plot isn't the most original, the movie still makes for a gripping watch, and one that gets your adrenaline pumping.
If you've scrolled through Netflix today and noticed 'Copycat' in the top 10, here's everything you need to know before adding it to your watchlist.
'Copycat' follows Dr. Helen Hudson (Sigourney Weaver), a renowned criminal psychologist who becomes a recluse after surviving a traumatic attack by a deranged killer.
Now agoraphobic and living in isolation, Helen is reluctantly pulled back into the world of crime-solving when a new serial killer begins targeting victims in San Francisco, each murder eerily mimicking the methods of infamous real-life murderers.
Assigned to the case are Detective M.J. Monahan (Holly Hunter) and her partner Reuben Goetz (Dermot Mulroney), who turn to Helen for insight as the killings escalate. Despite her crippling fear of the outside world, Helen uses her expertise to identify the pattern behind the copycat killings.

As the investigation intensifies, she and M.J. form an unlikely bond, working together to stay one step ahead of the killer, who seems to be watching Helen more closely than anyone realizes.
'The Silence of the Lambs' wasn't the very first Hollywood movie about serial killers, but its massive critical and box office success sparked a wave of similar movies that dominated the '90s before eventually fading out.
One of these copycats is ... well, Jon Amiel's 1995 thriller 'Copycat.' While it might not surpass 'Silence of the Lambs' or even Brad Pitt's 'Seven,' it's still a pretty intense watch and makes for some chilling midnight viewing.
It's refreshing to watch a thriller that centers on two smart, strong women, and even better that they're brought to life by Holly Hunter and Sigourney Weaver, two powerhouse actresses of their generation. There's real substance behind both characters, which helps 'Copycat' rise above just being another serial killer movie.
'Copycat' is very much a psychological study, taking time to explore the human side of its characters. Dr. Helen Hudson is dealing with some serious trauma and can't bring herself to leave the house, while Detective M.J. Monahan is driven by a strong commitment to solving the case and stopping the serial killer terrorizing the city.
Without this character development, 'Copycat' would feel hollow in the landscape of serial killer thrillers. Director Amiel, known for the unique and highly praised 1986 BBC series 'The Singing Detective,' shows his expertise here by keeping the story tightly focused.
The movie hardly ever wanders off track, always pushing the plot forward while keeping the tension just strong enough to stay gripping. Like classic studio movies that carefully balanced what the audience needed to know, this movie reveals just enough information to save you from feeling lost.
While 'Copycat' definitely has its strengths, there are a few noticeable flaws. The whole idea of a killer copying famous murderers felt a little predictable at times, and you might find yourself guessing where the story was headed a bit too early. In some ways it shares too many similarities with 'Seven' for this reason.
Outside of the two strong leads, most of the supporting cast doesn't get much time to be explored, which makes the world around them feel a little thin.
I'm sure Netflix viewers will still enjoy 'Copycat' (and I think it's worthy of your time even with these flaws). Movies have long been drawn to exploring evil, and I think part of that comes from how our own fears tend to fuel our interest.
If you haven't already added 'Copycat' to your Netflix watchlist, now's the time. The whole 'killer copying famous murderers' concept isn't exactly new, but this thriller handles it in a surprisingly smart and stylish way.
And a big part of why it works so well is, of course, Sigourney Weaver. I already loved her (partly because she stars in my favorite franchise of all time, 'Alien') but she really shines here. I'd argue that 'Copycat' is one of her best roles and a big reason why it's well worth carving out two hours of your time.
You don't need to take my word for it either, since 'Copycat' has a solid rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences rating it slightly lower at 64%. The site's critic consensus reads: 'Copycat's outstanding cast helps this often unpleasant thriller transcend the less palatable elements of its standard-issue story.'
'Copycat' is now streaming on Netflix. For more streaming recommendations, see what else is new on Netflix in June 2025.

‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' Season 2 Announced at Anime Expo 2025 With New Director, New Storyline, and a Whole Lot More Blood
Night City is calling once again. During Anime Expo 2025, Netflix and CD Projekt Red officially announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 — a brand-new installment of the acclaimed anime series set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. Revealed during the 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — Behind the Scenes With its Creators' panel, the new season will feature 'an entirely new story, fresh characters, and a raw, realistic take on the most dangerous city of the dark future.' Bartosz Sztybor, story writer and producer of the original series, confirmed the news alongside voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez), host Joey 'The Anime Man' Bizinger, and Edgerunners director Hiroyuki Imaishi. During the panel, fans were treated to exclusive reveals of the official Season 2 logo and poster artwork, according to The Verge. 'David's story might be over, but there's plenty more to discover in Night City,' Sztybor said. 'And to again have the legendary animation studio TRIGGER along for the ride makes us at CD PROJEKT RED so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we've done before.' Taking the reins this season is Kai Ikarashi, who directed Season 1's standout episode 'Girl on Fire.' Ikarashi was formally introduced as the new director in a video message shown during the panel, where he also debuted a 'Director's Voice' video, offering a glimpse into his creative vision for the next chapter. The new 10-episode standalone story is being described as 'sadder,' 'darker,' and 'more bloody,' according to Sztybor, who didn't hold back during the Trigger Studio panel: 'I just wanted to make the whole world sad… when people are sad, I'm a bit happy.' He added, 'It will be also darker, more bloody, and more raw.' A synopsis teases what's to come: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077 — a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter? Ikarashi will be joined by returning Edgerunners collaborators Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) as lead character designer and Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare), who will handle the screenplay adaptation. While there's no premiere date just yet, fans lucky enough to attend the Peacock Theater panel later that night were treated to a closed-door viewing of new teaser footage, which you can peep here. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is currently in production, with a future release planned for Netflix. More updates will be shared via the official website, newsletter, and CD Projekt Red's social channels on X, Facebook, and Instagram.

Tim Burton Says He's Working On A New Animated Project
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - JUNE 24: Tim Burton poses during a masterclass ahead the inauguration of the ... More immersive experience 'Laberinto' at Panteon Dolores on June 24, 2025 in Mexico City, Mexico. (Photo by Medios) Iconic filmmaker Tim Burton says he's returning to animation for an upcoming project. Burton, who got his start an animator with Walt Disney Animation Studios out of CalArts, directed the classic stop-motion animated short Vincent while with the studio in 1982. Later on, the filmmaker produced the stop-motion animated classic Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (which was directed by Henry Selick) in 1993, co-directed Corpse Bride (with Mike Johnson) in 2005 and directed Frankenweenie (based on his 1984 live-action short film) in 2012. Now, just weeks before the return of Netflix's Wednesday Season 2 — which he executive produces and directs some of the episodes — Burton is teasing at least one of his upcoming projects. During a recent interview with the Mexican press outlet Milenio (via World of Reel) at the opening of his new exhibition Tim Burton's Labyrinth in Mexico City, Burton said, 'I am working on something as an animated project. So, hopefully I'll have the script soon and take it from there. It's something I'm very excited about.' MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - JUNE 25: Tim Burton poses for a photo on the Red Carpet for the Tim Burton's ... More Exhibition 'Laberinto' at Lienzo Charro Constituyentes on June 25, 2025 in Mexico City, Mexico. (Photo by Medios) Tim Burton Did Not Indicate What Style Of Animation He Would Be Using For The Project While Tim Burton didn't get into any details about his upcoming animated project, it's quite likely that he will be filming in stop-motion animation again given his extensive history in the stop-motion field. In addition to his work on Vincent, Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie, Burton has worked stop-motion animated sequences into many of his live-action films, including Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and most recently, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. In the latter, stop-motion was used in the script to reveal the fate of Deetz family patriarch Charles Deetz, which also includes a cameo appearance by Burton. Stop-motion animation also is used in other key scenes in the film, including the return of the iconic black-and-white-stripped sandworm introduced in the original Beetlejuice. 'Tim made it very clear from the beginning that his intention was to use some stop-motion,' Beetlejuice Beetlejuice visual effects supervisor Angus Bickerton said in a Zoom conversation in November 2024. 'He knew he also wanted to — and we should mention the great work done by [creature effects creative supervisor] Neil Scanlan — use prosthetics, a creature effects team and a lot of on-set puppetry to capture the same vibe as the original," Bickerton added. Tim Burton's Labyrinth exhibition runs through Jan. 18, 2026, in Mexico City. Wednesday Season 2, starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, returns to Netflix with Part 1 (Episodes 1-4) on Wednesday, Aug. 6, and Part 2 on Wednesday, Sept. 3 (Episodes 5-8).
