AMMAN — The Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) has announced 'exceptional' operational results for the first half 2025, demonstrating a growth of 24 per cent across all key performance indicators.
In a statement on Wednesday, ACT said it has delivered high performance during the first six months of 2025, handling a total of 468,062 TEUs, representing a 24 per cent increase compared to 377,456 TEUs in the same period of 2024.
'This strong momentum was further demonstrated in June 2025, where the terminal handled 80,172 TEUs, marking a 14.9 per cent increase over the 69,759 TEUs handled in June 2024,' it said.
Beyond container volumes, ACT said it has 'efficiently served 293 vessels during the first half of the year compared to 200 vessels in the corresponding period of 2024.'
ACT said it also processed 281,585 truck transactions compared to 216,071 truck transactions during the same period last year, facilitating seamless cargo flow to and from Jordan and neighboring countries.
The company also said that it has experienced a 117 per cent increase in TEUs during the year's first half. 'This dramatic growth underscores ACT's expanding role as a regional hub for the Levant, connecting Jordan to broader regional trade networks and reinforcing its position as the preferred gateway for the region.'
"These results reflect not only the strength of Jordan's trade position but also the exceptional dedication of our entire ACT team," said CEO of ACT Harald Nijhof.
Nijhof emphasised the strategic significance of these results, noting that "the 24 per cent growth in our first-half performance, combined with the remarkable 117% increase in transit cargo, demonstrates our strategic importance as a regional hub. We remain committed to supporting Jordan's economic growth and strengthening supply chains across the Levant through continued investment in our infrastructure and our people."
In the statement, ACT said it continues to focus on delivering reliable service, strengthening supply chains, and supporting national and regional trade through operational excellence and strategic infrastructure investment.
'The terminal's strong performance positions it well to capitalise on growing regional trade opportunities while maintaining its commitment to service excellence and supporting the economic development of Jordan and the broader Levant region.'

Jordan's cabinet approves framework to boost green hydrogen projects

AMMAN – The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a "comprehensive" framework aimed at accelerating the development of green hydrogen projects across the Kingdom. The newly endorsed mechanism outlines a strategic vision to position the Kingdom as a "regional" hub for green hydrogen production, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, said. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources prepared the framework, which emphasises Jordan's natural and regulatory advantages, and presents the Kingdom as an 'attractive' destination for investment in this "emerging" sector. The ministry described the framework for developing green hydrogen projects as a "strategic step towards positioning Jordan as a regional centre for green hydrogen production." The ministry said that the framework outlines a comprehensive national vision that leverages Jordan's "abundant renewable energy resources, particularly solar and wind power, as well as the country's vast, unutilised lands suitable for green hydrogen development." The concept paper, prepared by the ministry, highlights Jordan's natural and regulatory advantages, noting that they make the Kingdom an attractive destination for investment in the emerging green hydrogen sector, according to Petra. The approved mechanism includes a "detailed" plan to facilitate investment in the industry, and designates strategic sites in southern Jordan for renewable energy production and allocate an "industrial zone" within the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority for establishing green hydrogen plants and water desalination facilities. The plan entails the development of shared infrastructure in Aqaba, including desalination units, green ammonia storage facilities, export terminals and other critical logistics needed for project implementation. The mechanism offers a package of incentives backed by current legislation to attract investors, including the Investment Environment Law and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Law. It also establishes a "contractual" pathway for investors, from signing memoranda of understanding and conducting feasibility studies to securing land-use agreements and finalising investment contracts. The government has formed a national green hydrogen committee comprising relevant stakeholders. The committee will oversee implementation of the strategy and coordinate related investments in line with Jordan's broader vision for strengthening food security, increasing exports, and transitioning to a sustainable, green economy. The government last week approved two land-use agreements, one with Jordan's Philadelphia Solar and the other with Germany's Enertrag, to conduct feasibility studies for green hydrogen production projects. "These are part of the government's broader strategy to position Jordan as a regional hub for green hydrogen," the statement read. With these agreements, the number of approved land-use deals for hydrogen development has reached six, out of 13 MoUs previously signed with leading energy companies. The six firms have completed preliminary feasibility studies and technical reports and are now advancing to the land allocation stage, the statement said. During this phase, companies will carry out "detailed" measurements of renewable energy sources to prepare "final" feasibility studies. Investment decisions will be based on these outcomes, the statement said. © Copyright The Jordan Times. All rights reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Asian stocks wobble, dollar edges down with tariff deadline in focus

TOKYO: Most Asian equity markets struggled on Friday, despite record highs for Wall Street overnight, as U.S. President Donald Trump's deadline for trade deals loomed next week. The dollar retraced some of Thursday's gains with U.S. markets already shut for the week, as traders considered the impact of the sweeping spending bill Trump is about to sign into law. Japan's Nikkei rose 0.3% as of 0152 GMT after flipping between gains and losses in early trading. Hong Kong's Hang Seng slumped 1.3%, while mainland Chinese blue chips edged slightly lower. Taiwan's equity benchmark shed early gains to decline 0.2%. South Korea's KOSPI sank more than 1%. U.S. S&P 500 futures edged down 0.2%, following a 0.8% overnight advance for the cash index to a fresh all-time closing peak. Wall Street is closed Friday for Independence Day. Investors cheered a surprisingly robust jobs report on Thursday in sending all three of the main U.S. equity indexes climbing in a shortened session. Following the close, the House narrowly approved Trump's signature, 869-page bill, which would add $3.4 trillion to the nation's $36.2 trillion debt, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Trump also said he would start sending out letters to trade partners with their tariff rates, as deals remained elusive ahead of the July 9 deadline. The U.S. President said he expected "a couple" more agreements after announcing a deal with Vietnam on Wednesday to add to framework agreements with China and Britain as the only successes so far. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said earlier this week that a deal with India is close. However agreements with Japan and South Korea, once touted by the White House as likely to be among the earliest to be announced, appear to have broken down. "It is now just waiting for July 9," said Tony Sycamore, an analyst at IG, with the market's lack of optimism for deals responsible for some of the equity weakness around the region, particularly Japan and South Korea. At the same time, Thursday's jobs data shows "the U.S. economy is holding together better than most people expected, which suggests to me that markets can easily continue to do better" from here, Sycamore said. The jobs data saw traders take any expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate cut this month off the table. The U.S. dollar rallied, taking it up as much as 0.7% versus a basket of major peers on Thursday before it pared its advance to end the session with a 0.4% rise. Early on Friday, the U.S. currency gave back a little of those gains, slipping 0.2% to 144.62 yen and edging down 0.1% to 0.7942 Swiss franc. The euro added 0.1% to $1.1766, while sterling traded flat at $1.3650. The U.S. Treasury bond market is closed Friday for the holiday, but 10-year yields rose 4.7 basis points (bps) to 4.34% while the 2-year yield jumped 9.3 bps to 3.882%. Gold inched up 0.1% to $3,329.54 per ounce. Brent crude futures rose 1 cent to $68.81 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude firmed 3 cents to $67.03.
