U.K. authorities seize cocaine worth more than US$130 million from a ship at London port

LONDON — British authorities seized 2.4 metric tons of cocaine in a ship arriving in England from Panama, authorities said Saturday, calling it one of the U.K.'s biggest drug busts in years.
The drugs, valued at 96 million pounds (US$132 million), were found under containers on a vessel at London Gateway port, east of the British capital. The shipment was discovered after what officials said was an intelligence-led operation.
Britain's interior ministry, the Home Office, said it was the sixth-largest cocaine seizure on record.
U.K. Border Force Maritime director Charlie Eastaugh said the seizure was 'just one example of how dedicated Border Force maritime officers remain one step ahead of the criminal gangs who threaten our security.
'Our message to these criminals is clear — more than ever before, we are using intelligence and international law enforcement co-operation to disrupt and dismantle your operations.'
Britain is one of Europe's biggest markets for cocaine, according to the National Crime Agency. The U.K. government says cocaine-related deaths in England and Wales rose by 31 per cent between 2022 and 2023.

Over $200K in drugs, cash seized by Sarnia police
An investigation into suspected drug trafficking in Sarnia has ended in charges for one man. According to police, the Sarnia Police Major Case Action Team (MCAT) arrested a 23-year-old man from Scarborough on Thursday during a traffic stop. Police say a search of the man's vehicle yielded the following: 10.5 oz of cocaine 13 oz methamphetamine 8oz of fentanyl - half of that 8oz was uncut fentanyl The estimated street value of the seized drugs is approximately $222,069. Police seized 163 grams of cocaine, 18 grams of crack cocaine, and 66 grams of fentanyl, with an estimated total street value of $45,234. Five individuals were arrested without incident: A 23-year-old from M'Chigeeng First Nation, charged with two counts of drug trafficking and failing to comply with a release order. A 28-year-old from Little Current, charged with two counts of drug trafficking. A 30-year-old from M'Chigeeng First Nation, also charged with two counts of drug trafficking. A 26-year-old from North York, charged with two counts of drug trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime. Authorities urged community collaboration to combat drug trafficking and related violence, highlighting its ties to 'home invasions, serious assaults, and homicides,' as well as addiction and homelessness. Anyone with information about any criminal activity in the region is asked to contact UCCM Police at 705-377-7135 or Crime Stoppers anonymously. 'Together we can make a difference,' police said.
