
Waiting for AI-171 crash probe report: Officials
The Public Accounts Committee session, originally scheduled to discuss infrastructure fees and tariffs, instead became the first parliamentary meeting to address the Air India Flight 171 tragedy and broader aviation safety concerns.
The discussion came just days ahead of Friday's 30-day deadline for the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to report its preliminary findings into the crash of Flight 171, the cause of which is yet to be determined.
Several MPs highlighted multiple air safety incidents that have occurred since the Ahmedabad crash, with one Opposition member demanding a special audit of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the ministry's security wing responsible for safety standards at airports nationwide, people aware of the conversations said.
BJP MP Jagdambika Pal confirmed air safety dominated the proceedings, with lawmakers including former aviation minister Praful Patel, BJP's Ravishankar Prasad, and Congress's Shaktisinh Gohil pressing officials on investigation progress and systemic safety measures.
Air India officials defended their Boeing 787 fleet, telling the committee the aircraft 'has been and is considered one of the safest aircraft in the world,' noting that 1,100 such planes are currently in service globally.
Patel, drawing on his ministerial experience, called for the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to address staffing shortages in senior positions. 'Safety is paramount. Anyone who flies wants to feel safe and assured that he will reach his destination,' he said. 'Indian aviation is safe. There is no need to be panicking about it. All airlines, including Air India, follow safety protocols,' he was quoted as saying.
MPs posed detailed questions about the investigation's technical aspects, seeking information on team composition, including whether type-rated pilots and engineers for the Boeing 787 are involved in the probe, a person aware of the discussions told HT.
They also enquired about the current status of digital flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder analysis, questioning whether the work is being conducted at AAIB's laboratory at Udaan Bhawan and its technical capabilities.
Lawmakers further asked whether foreign agencies such as the US National Transportation Safety Board or the UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch have been requested to assist the investigation.
Officials are expected to provide written responses to the parliamentary queries.

Indian officials are hoping to secure a trade deal with US President Donald Trump at a lower tariff rate than he'd agreed with Indonesia as New Delhi races to meet an August 1 deadline. Trump said Tuesday the US will impose a tariff rate of 19% on imports from Indonesia, down from a threatened 32%, and will be able to ship American goods to the country tariff-free. The US president later told reporters that the India deal would be "along that same line" and "we're going to have access into India." India is seeking more favourable rates than Indonesia and the 20% tariff Trump has said he'll impose on Vietnam, officials in New Delhi said, asking not to be identified because the discussions are private. The US and India are working toward a deal that would reduce proposed tariffs to below 20%, Bloomberg News previously reported, with a negotiating team currently in Washington to advance the talks. New Delhi is hoping for a tariff that would give it a competitive advantage against its peers in the region, officials said. India believes the US doesn't view it as a transhipment hub like Vietnam and other Southeast Asian nations, and negotiations so far suggest India's tariff rate would be better than those countries, one of the people said. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry didn't immediately respond to an email seeking further comment. GLOBAL INSIGHT: Delhi's Trade Math in Talks with Trump Soumya Kanti Ghosh, chief economist of State Bank of India, and a member of the prime minister's Economic Advisory Council, said the negotiating team would be hoping to bring the tariff down to below 10%. While India is unwilling to open up the agricultural and dairy sectors, it may give concessions in non-agricultural sectors, he said. India has already proposed to reduce tariffs on American industrial goods to zero if the US does the same. Malaysia's trade minister said he's waiting to see the details of the Indonesia agreement and the country is still in negotiations with the US on its own tariffs, The Star reported. "Most importantly, we must ensure that this is a negotiation beneficial to both countries," Tengku Zafrul, minister of investment, trade and industry, was quoted by the newspaper as saying. "It must be win-win."

State has sufficient land for industries: MB Patil
Bengaluru: Responding to Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh's invitation for aerospace-defence industries to come to his state, MB Patil, Karnataka's Minister for Large and Medium Industries, asserted on Wednesday that the state government would not allow any industry to exit due to lack of land. Addressing media queries at the KPCC office, Patil said that the proposed land acquisition at Devanahalli for the proposed Aerospace and Defence Park has been dropped, taking into account the interests of farmers. 'Karnataka is a major contributor to the country's aerospace and defence sector, accounting for 65% of the national share. This is recognised as the third-best ecosystem globally. Land availability alone is not the determining factor for industries; a robust ecosystem plays a far more crucial role,' he pointed out. Referring to Nara Lokesh's post on 'X' inviting aerospace industries to Andhra Pradesh, Patil said he had responded with a befitting reply. 'Karnataka has immense potential and I am an able minister. We have sufficient land not only for aerospace and defence, but also for AI, deep tech, IT and other industries. We will not let even a single industrialist leave the state due to non-availability of land,' he emphasised. 'To facilitate industries, we go beyond land allocation. We also ensure water, power, and other essential infrastructure. We have already prepared an integrated plan worth ₹3,600 crore to guarantee water supply to industrial areas across the state,' Patil said. Commenting on state BJP president Vijayendra's remarks regarding the dropping of land acquisition at Devanahalli, Patil said, 'Now Vijayendra is supporting industrialists. Had the government decided to go ahead with land acquisition, he would have sided with the farmers. Whatever interpretation the opposition gives, the state's interest remains my top priority.'

BJD workers in scuffle with police at PMG
Bhubaneswar: The workers and leaders of Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Wednesday engaged in a scuffle with the Commissionerate Police at Lower PMG Square in Bhubaneswar while marching ahead to gherao the Lok Seva Bhavan, demanding justice for Fakir Mohan Autonomous College student, Soumyashree Bisi, who succumbed on Monday following self-immolation attempt last week over sexual harassment by a college faculty member. The police used water cannon and fired tear gas bullets to disperse the protesters who tried to march ahead by breaking the police barricade at the spot. Hundreds of BJD workers and leaders were also detained by the Commissionerate Police to bring the situation under control. The protest march began at Master Canteen Square and moved towards PMG Square, drawing large participation from party leaders, women members and supporters. The demonstration saw emotional appeals, slogans and placards demanding justice for the deceased student and stricter action against those responsible. Several BJD workers and leaders, including Pranab Prakash Das and Priti Ranjan Gharei, sustained injuries during the demonstration. The BJD leaders criticised the BJP-led State government for failing to ensure justice for the victim Soumyashree. The Opposition leaders criticised the inaction by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj and local administration leading to the unfortunate death of Soumyashree. The party also expressed grave concern over the increasing number of crimes against women across the State and called for immediate policy action and accountability. The party asserted that the demonstration is not just about one girl, but the safety and dignity of every woman in Odisha. The silence of those in power is unacceptable. The party has been demanding judicial inquiry under the chairmanship of a sitting judge of Orissa High Court into the self-immolation of Soumyashree and the resignation of the State Higher Education Minister. The BJD vice-President, Debi Prasad Mishra, said, 'this is the wrath of the people of Odisha. Biju Janata Dal, as the responsible Opposition party and the largest party of Odisha, we are resenting the heinous act in which a college student died and she had to resort to self-immolation.' He alleged that six months ago, Soumyashree had given her representation to the Internal Committee of the college. Mishra also said she also filed a complaint with Shadevkhunta Police on June 13 over the sexual harassment by Head of the Department, Samir Kumar Sahu. 'The Balasore Superintendent of Police and the Collector were aware of this but nobody paid any heed to it. On July 1, she also submitted her grievances to the Chief Minister, Union Education Minister, State Higher Education Minister, the local MLA but nobody responded to her. Even the local MP admitted that he did not take it seriously. This is ridiculous and condemnable,' he added.
