Rovanpera emerges from home forests leading Rally of Finland

France 24a day ago
On treacherous dirt and gravel tracks the two-time world champion won three of the day's nine stages behind the wheel of a Toyota.
Rovanpera finished the day 4.9sec ahead of defending world champion Thierry Neuville (Hyundai), followed by Adrien Fourmaux at 7.7sec.
Japan's Takamoto Katsuta is in fourth place, ahead of another Finn Sami Pajari (Toyota).
Eight-time former French world champion Sebastien Ogier (Toyota) is in sixth, nearly 20 seconds behind the leader.
Ott Tanak won Thursday's opening super special stage in Finland to take an early lead in the ninth round of the world rally championship.
But the Estonian, top of the title standings by one point, has had rotten luck in Finland.
And on Friday he had to open the road, dropping to eighth after losing more than a minute to Rovanpera.
There are eight more specials with over a 130km of action on Saturday with just two specials on the 24km course to close on Sunday.

Home hero Ferrand-Prevot in epic climb to Tour de France lead

Olympic mountain bike champion Ferrand-Prevot of Visma, who joined the road race scene last year, attacked from 10km out with huge crowds of home supporters on the mountainside cheering her along. Visma rider Prevot-Ferrand now leads the overall standings by a comfortable 2 minutes and 37 seconds from Australia's Sarah Gigante, albeit with a last daunting mountain stage on Sunday to seal the deal. "I just tried to go as fast as possible. If I came back to road cycling it was in an effort to win this race so I made the right choice," said the 33-year-old. "I wanted to have as big a gap as possible, it's not over yet but I'm very happy with what we did today." Gigante of AG was second atop la Madeleine at 1min 45sec, while LTK's Niamh Fisher-Black was third at 2min 15sec. "I was dreaming of winning this race," said Gigante. "But Pauline was magnificent." Overnight leader Kim Le Court-Pienaar sacrificed her ride to support Gigante, who cried when mentioning this after the race. No Frenchman has won the 21-day men's Tour de France since 1985 when Bernard Hinault won his fifth, now Ferrand-Prevot can become the first French rider to win the modern women's Tour de France in its fourth edition.

US keeper Turner joins Lyon from Notts Forest, loaned to MLS

Lyon paid eight million euros ($9.2 million) for the 31-year-old who has 52 caps for the United States. A 10 percent profit-sharing interest on the capital gain of a potential future transfer is included in the transaction. Turner's loan to the New England Revolution comes with a three-million euro purchase option. Turner moved to Forest from Arsenal in August 2023 and played 21 times in all competitions before heading to Crystal Palace in the 2024/25 season, in a year-long loan deal. He helped Crystal Palace win their first major trophy after beating Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final in Wembley in May. Lyon also announced it had loaned Croatian international defender Duje Caleta-Car to Spanish club Real Sociedad for one year with a four million euro purchase option. The 28-year-old Caleta-Car, who has 33 caps, arrived at Lyon from Southampton in 2023. © 2025 AFP
