Global disruptions to help Indian higher education sector to grow, attract foreign students: QS CEO

As the Union Education Ministry claimed major improvement in the country's higher education sector citing that Indian institutions have achieved their best-ever performance in the World University Rankings 2026, conducted by British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the chief executive officer (CEO) of QS, Jessica Turner, has told The Hindu in an online interview that India can benefit from the shift in the traditional model of students going abroad to the United States, United Kingdom, Canada or Australia due to various factors such as geopolitical instability, economic pressures, Artificial Intelligence and visa restrictions. She welcomed the decision to allow foreign universities to set up campuses in India and said it will invite students worldwide to India. Excerpts from the interview:
How do you assess the performance of Indian higher education institutions in the latest QS ranking?
This year, India performed exceptionally in the QS Rankings — eight new institutions entered, the highest from any country. Over the last decade, India's representation grew by 390%, overtaking Germany to become the fourth most represented country (after the US, UK, and China). We've seen a holistic rise in India's higher education landscape, with more institutions participating globally. About 48% of Indian institutions improved in ranking, while only 24% declined — a strong performance compared to other countries with large numbers of ranked institutions.
Key drivers include improved employer reputation, employment outcomes, and increased research — especially among IITs. The focus on employability and research aligns with India's economic growth. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has been instrumental in driving internationalization and raising quality.
Based on the points earned in the ranking in different criteria, which are the areas where the Indian institutions can improve performance in future?
Rankings are relative and a dynamic exercise. A fall doesn't mean decline — it may indicate slower progress compared to peers. In areas like international student and faculty ratios, Indian institutions lag. For instance, 78% declined in the international student metric. The faculty-student ratio is also a challenge due to rapid enrolment growth. The 50% Gross Enrolment Ratio target stretches resources, making it hard to match global faculty availability.
Citations per faculty is a lagging metric. The improvements seen now reflect research-oriented reforms made over the last 5–10 years — not just in IITs but also in technical institutions under AICTE. These reforms created a more research-intensive environment, and that's finally being reflected in our rankings.
Question: Mostly, engineering and technology institutions from India have come up in the rankings. What does this indicate?
India's top-ranking institutions are primarily in engineering and technology. These excel in 'Employer Reputation' and 'Citations per Faculty', suggesting strong graduate employability and impactful research. Eight Indian institutions now rank in the global top 100 for research impact—seven are IITs. This demonstrates where international partners are increasingly seeking collaboration.
Question: India has now allowed foreign universities to open their campuses in India. How do you see this policy change? And will the global disruptions bring major changes in the higher education sector globally?
Internationalisation efforts like joint degree programmes, exchange initiatives, and collaborative research will improve long-term outcomes. These efforts, supported by NEP reforms, are expected to attract more international students and researchers to India. India is also in a strong position to fill global research gaps — particularly as funding declines in countries like the US. Indian institutions offer high-quality, cost-effective research collaboration opportunities.
The traditional model — students going abroad to the US, UK, Canada, or Australia — is shifting. Geopolitical instability, economic pressures, AI, and visa restrictions are prompting more hybrid models. Students may now complete parts of their degree at home and travel less.
This shift supports joint, online, and blended programs. We also expect regional hubs (e.g., UAE, Singapore, Malaysia) to attract more students due to affordability and English-language programs. These destinations provide high-quality education at lower costs.
India can benefit from this shift. It can position itself as a destination for international students, especially from Africa and Central Asia. The NEP lays a strong legislative foundation, and now the focus must be on removing operational barriers (e.g., visa issues) to fully enable internationalisation.

An Aam Aadmi Party MP has come out in support of Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh amid the ongoing controversy over his film Sardaar Ji 3, featuring Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. Dr Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), termed the backlash against the actor for working with Pakistani actress as "unjust, excessive, and irrational". The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has called for withdrawing Dosanjh's citizenship and banning his music in India. "To question Diljit Dosanjh's patriotism is grossly unfair," said Dr Sahney. "The film was shot long before the unfortunate incident in Pahalgam. Even an Indo-Pak cricket match was held during that period. We should not confuse timelines or motives when making a judgment on someone's actions." Dr Sahney appreciated Diljit's mature and compassionate move not to release the film in Indian cinemas, being sensitive to public opinion. "He has been gracious in deciding not to release the film here. That says a lot about his character and regard for national feelings," said the AAP leader. He also pointed out Diljit's lead role in showcasing Indian culture on the world stage, from Coachella to the Met Gala, stating that the artist wore his identity as a proud Indian and a proud Punjabi. "Rather than demonising him on the basis of disinformation, we should be hailing him as a cultural ambassador," added Dr Sahney. The casting of a Pakistani actress in the film has been criticised, particularly against the backdrop of government's post-attack restrictions on Pakistani artists' involvement in Indian entertainment. Diljit Dosanjh maintains that his movie, Sardaar Ji 3, was finalised much earlier than these geopolitical events. "When the film was made, the situation was fine... This film was shot in February. A lot of things happened after that which are not in our control," Diljit had said earlier. The film body, Federation of Western India Cine Employees, appealed to the government to blacklist Diljit Dosanjh and Sardaar Ji 3 makers. They also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that their passports are revoked, and their citizenship is cancelled.

Mumbai: Amid strong protest against the imposition of Hindi in Marathi and English schools for classes 1 to 5 and the joint morcha by estranged brothers Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray on July 5, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday announced the formation of a committee headed by the former Planning Commission member Narendra Jadhav to prepare a report on the trilingual policy formula keeping the interest of Marathi student at the centre. At the press conference, he also announced that the state Cabinet has decided to scrap two government resolutions released on April 16 and June 17, saying the state government has made the Marathi language compulsory while Hindi is an optional language. The committee has sought a three-month time limit for preparing the report. The April 16 government resolution had proposed Hindi to be a compulsory third language in Marathi and English schools for classes 1 to 5, but the government put it on hold after protests from various quarters. The government issued a revised government resolution on June 17, whereby Marathi has been made mandatory in all schools while Hindi is optional. The students were given an option to use one of the Indian languages. The government resolution further stated that students were allowed to choose from other Indian languages in the place of Hindi if 20 students per grade in a school express the desire to study any Indian language other than Hindi. The Cabinet decision to cancel two government resolutions means the government has decided not to implement the trilingual policy before the Narendra Jadhav committee's report. Hindi won't be a third language for now in classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English schools. The Chief Minister also targeted the Uddhav Thackeray-led government over the Hindi language policy, saying that the Maha Vikas Aghadi government had accepted the report submitted by a high-level committee headed by noted scientist Raghunath Mashelkar, which had recommended making English and Hindi compulsory. This was recommended to benefit the Marathi students in the Academic Bank of Credit and get entrance to pursue their education. 'The MahaYuti government has instead made Marathi compulsory, Hindi optional. The interests of Marathi students are important for the government. We will ask Uddhav Thackeray how Marathi schools in Mumbai are closing down. We will also ask him who was responsible for the Marathi people going out of Mumbai. However, the MahaYuti government has brought back Marathi people to Mumbai. Uddhav Thackeray is opposed to Hindi but rolling out a red carpet for English.' Fadnavis alleged that Uddhav Thackeray wants to do politics over the Marathi language. However, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray alleged that it was an attempt to implement a three-language formula by making Hindi compulsory and announced their strong opposition. It was also supported by other opposition parties. The Marathi language experts, educationists and various other organisations also protested the government's revised resolution. Fadnavis' announcement is an attempt to checkmate Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray to further cash in on the Marathi language issue while opposing Hindi ahead of the upcoming BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation elections. It is also an attempt to avoid poll losses to MahaYuti and thereby consolidate its position to lure Marathi people. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who had suggested the introduction of Hindi from class 4, appealed to the organisers not to take out a morcha on July 5 in Mumbai following Sunday's Cabinet decision.

Torrent Pharma to acquire JB Pharma from KKR at ₹25,689 cr valuation

In one of the largest pharma deals in the domestic market in recent years, Ahmedabad-based Torrent Pharmaceuticals will acquire a controlling stake in investment firm KKR-backed JB Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals (known as JB Pharma) at an equity valuation of ₹25,689 crore, which will be followed by the merger of the two entities. The deal will be executed in two phases — acquisition of the 46.39 per cent stake held by KKR in JB Pharma at ₹1,600 per share, amounting to ₹11,917 crore, followed by a mandatory open offer to acquire up to 26 per cent of JB Pharma shares from public shareholders at ₹1,639.18 per share. 'In addition to the above, Torrent has also expressed its intent to acquire up to 2.8 per cent of equity shares from certain employees of JB Pharma at the same price per share as KKR,' the company said in a statement on Sunday. The next step in the deal will be a merger between Torrent Pharma and JB Pharma through a scheme of arrangement, under which every shareholder holding 100 shares in JB Pharma will receive 51 shares of Torrent Pharma. The boards of directors of both companies have approved this arrangement. KKR had acquired 54 per cent of JB Pharma in July 2020 from the promoters and founders, the Mody family, for approximately ₹3,100 crore (or ₹745 per share). It sold a part of its stake in March this year through block deals for ₹1,459.8 crore. KKR has earned more than five times on its investment, with around 36 per cent gross IRR. For instance, Torrent Pharma has previously indicated plans to increase its medical representative (MR) strength by 23 per cent by the end of FY26, and the acquisition can aid in manpower augmentation. Torrent Pharma holds a 3.74 per cent share in the domestic market (according to Pharmarack, May 2025), while JB Pharma commands a 1.12 per cent share. Further, consolidation in key international markets is expected to offer greater scalability. Samir Mehta, executive chairman of Torrent Pharma, said they want to build on JB Pharma's heritage and platform for the future. 'Torrent's deep India presence and JB Pharma's fast-growing India business, combined with the CDMO and international footprint, offer immense potential to scale both revenue and profitability. This strategic alignment furthers our goal of strengthening our presence in the Indian pharma market and builds a larger diversified global presence. Moreover, the CDMO platform provides a new long-term avenue of growth for Torrent.' Torrent has previously taken the inorganic route to grow its business and enter newer segments — in 2013, it acquired Elder Pharma's India-branded business; followed by the dermaceutical business of Zyg Pharma in 2015 and the API plant of Glochem Industries in 2016. Among other major deals, it bought the India-branded business of Unichem in 2017. Its last major acquisition was of skin-care products from Curatio Healthcare in 2022. Torrent Pharma is a highly domestic-focused company, drawing around 55 per cent of its consolidated revenues from the domestic formulations business. India sales grew by 13 per cent in FY25 to ₹6,393 crore. While the company has been outperforming industry growth in the domestic market, it is also planning to increase MR strength by 23 per cent by FY26-end. Torrent has a strong presence in the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and neurology segments. JB too has prominent cardiac and gastro brands like Cilacar, Metrogyl and Rantac. Torrent is also working on launching GLP-1 products as a day-one launch in FY26. Analysts expect a 15 per cent sales CAGR in domestic formulations for Torrent Pharma over FY25–27. Gaurav Trehan, co-head of Asia Pacific and head of Asia Pacific private equity at KKR, and CEO of KKR India, said: 'JB Pharma's transformation under our stewardship is a testament to KKR's ability to scale high-quality companies.' Nikhil Chopra, chief executive officer and whole-time director of JB Pharma, pointed out that over the past five years, the company has emerged as one of India's fastest-growing pharmaceutical players. 'We have built a strong foundation to deliver market-leading growth, as well as consistent improvement in profitability in the medium and long term. As we now enter a new chapter alongside Torrent Pharmaceuticals, we are confident that the combined strengths of our organisations will unlock greater opportunities to enhance healthcare access across our markets,' Chopra said. JB Pharma posted 12 per cent revenue growth in FY25 to ₹3,918 crore, while its EBITDA rose 16 per cent to ₹1,087 crore, and PAT increased 19 per cent to ₹660 crore. Notably, KKR Private equity has invested $2 billion in India in 2024 and recently invested $600 million in Manipal Group via its private credit arm.
