Dharmasthala mass grave allegations: Govt won't give any direction to SIT, says Karnataka Minister

Hans India21-07-2025
Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara clarified on Monday that the government will not issue any directions to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the probe into the Dharmasthala mass grave allegations, which claim that hundreds of women and girls were allegedly raped and murdered.
Dharmasthala is one of the major Hindu pilgrimage centres in Karnataka.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Parameshwara stated, "Let's wait for the investigation. We will not give any instructions to the SIT officers. One of the SIT officers has formally met me. Once the investigation is ordered, they will carry out their responsibilities."
Commenting on reports that two IPS officers were planning to withdraw from the SIT, Parameshwara said no such development had taken place. "I don't know about that. They are senior officers holding responsible positions, and they will do their job. They have not informed the government or me that they intend to withdraw from the SIT," he said.
He further added, "Who demanded a high-level probe? Many local residents and progressive thinkers have called for it. A complaint has been lodged, and the complainant has alleged that bodies were disposed of. We need to ascertain the facts of the case through a proper investigation."
"If statements are made without basis, it is not appropriate from a legal standpoint. In this context, an investigation has been ordered. We do not yet know the outcome. If the investigation reveals that there is nothing to the allegations, we can inform the public accordingly," he maintained.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, when asked about the formation of the SIT, said, "There is an ongoing debate for and against this issue. The Home Minister is handling the matter, and very senior officers have been appointed to the SIT. The truth will come out after the investigation."
When asked whether the SIT was formed to divert attention from the issue, he replied, "Whatever we do, the BJP will oppose it."
Responding to a question about the sudden formation of the SIT right after the Chief Minister had said that a decision would be taken based on the local police investigation, he said, "When the media highlights an issue prominently, shouldn't we also show respect to the media? In a democratic system, ensuring justice to society is your responsibility as much as it is ours. We must listen to your concerns and the suggestions of the opposition parties."
The Dharmasthala temple management has welcomed the probe into the mass grave allegations in the region by the SIT. The government has announced the formation of SIT in this regard on Sunday.
The SIT is led by senior IPS officer Pronab Mohanty, DGP of the Internal Security Department, along with DIG (Recruitment) M.N. Anuchet, DCP (City Armed Reserve) Sowmyalatha, and Jitendra Kumar, Superintendent of Police in the Internal Security Department.
On July 11, the unidentified complainant, who had claimed that he was forced to bury several bodies of women who were raped and murdered in Dharmasthala village, appeared before a court in Karnataka's Mangaluru district and recorded his statement.
The man gave his statement under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) before Principal Civil Judge and First Class Judicial Magistrate Sandesh K.
He requested that the police exhume the bodies in his presence. The complainant also sought protection for himself and his family.
According to his statement, he fled Dharmasthala 11 years ago.
He further alleged that the bodies of the women showed clear signs of sexual assault. They were found without clothes or undergarments and bore injuries suggesting violent acts. The revelations have shocked the state.

Home Minister directs police to act seriously on drugs

Bengaluru: Home Minister G Parameshwara on Monday said he has issued directions to all Police Superintendents and Commissionerates across the state to ensure local police stations take drug-related activities seriously and initiate action. The direction follows the recent bust of an MDMA drug manufacturing facility in Mysuru by the Maharashtra police. Acknowledging this as a lapse on part of the local police, he said directions have been given to take action against those officials involved. An MDMA drug manufacturing facility was raided here by Maharashtra police in coordination with the Mysuru City police on Saturday, police sources said. A large quantity of MDMA or ecstasy was seized during the raid, and four people have been arrested and taken to Mumbai, where an FIR had been registered. 'Mumbai police, I believe they caught somebody, either a peddler or a user I don't know exactly and they have traced it back to Mysuru. Obviously, the person whom they have caught has made a statement that it (MDMA) was outsourced from Mysuru. They have come in search of it and found that some people were doing this in a shed in Mysuru,' Parameshwara said. Addressing reporters here, he said, 'The question is how porous we are in terms of looking at all these things. That is why I have given very strict instructions to our commissionerate in Mysuru, also generally throughout the state. Every SP has been sensitised now and every commissionerate has been given very strict instructions that such things do not happen. Otherwise, what is the use of us being there as police?' Expressing concern over the production of MDMA at a facility in Mysuru, the Home Minister said he has sought action against the officials at the local police station. 'Because, if the jurisdictional police are not aware of such activities and if some other agency or other state police come and raid and make arrests, naturally it shows lapses. So I have asked for action to be taken and also to sensitise the police across the state to take the drug related activities seriously,' he added. Following the raid, Inspector of Narasimharaja Police Station, Lakshmikant Talwar, was suspended pending a departmental inquiry, officials said.

Fraudsters duping devotees in the name of ‘darshan' in temples across Maha

PUNE: A series of incidents across major temples in Maharashtra have exposed malpractices ranging from black marketing of darshan passes to fake QR codes and portals to misuse of VIP entry; all of which have exploited the faith (and desperation) of devotees seeking a satisfying spiritual experience. While these cases were reported separately, taken together, they reveal a disconcerting pattern that has forced temple authorities and district administrations to revisit the systems that are presently in place. Indian devotees gather at The Shani Shingnapur Temple in Ahmednagar, some 200kms east of Mumbai on April 2, 2016. Angry villagers blocked a group of women activists from entering the inner sanctum of a temple in western India, despite a court order mandating Hindu women's right to worship / AFP PHOTO / STR (AFP) At the Jyotirlinga shrine in Trimbakeshwar, Nashik, Nashik rural police arrested five men for black marketing of darshan passes wherein they used fake identities to book multiple passes—officially priced at ₹200—only to subsequently sell them at ₹800 to ₹1,000 apiece. Having worked at flower stalls near the temple, the men used the familiarity to approach devotees unfamiliar with the online pass booking system. Mahesh Kulkarni, police inspector at Trimbakeshwar police station, said, 'Many devotees don't know how to book online passes. These accused would offer to help such devotees under the pretext of selling flowers.' Initially, they helped the devotees book passes for free while selling flowers but soon realised that they could exploit the system to their advantage. With no mechanism to crosscheck identity cards during online booking, the accused began mass booking passes and reselling them at inflated prices. The police found out that one of the accused, Shivraj Aher, booked over 1,000 passes in this manner. The accused had also created a WhatsApp group through which the passes were sold. Investigators suspect that more people may be involved in this racket. Purushottam Kadalag, trustee at the Shri Trimbakeshwar Devasthan Trust, said, 'The accused benefitted from the loopholes in the online darshan pass system. We are also in the process of learning and after this incident, we have decided to crosscheck the issued passes with the respective identities (id's) of the devotees. Also, we will soon introduce an Aadhar card number-based darshan pass system to avoid such incidents in future.' In Shani Shingnapur, devotees were misled by fake websites and QR codes offering services such as VIP darshan, online puja, abhishek and oil offerings - none of which were authorised by the temple trust. The cybercrime unit has registered an FIR, and identified at least five such fraudulent platforms. Somnath Gharge, superintendent of police, Ahilyanagar district, said, 'These were cloned websites designed to siphon donations. Devotees thought that they were contributing to the temple but were transferring money to private accounts instead…' Whereas Pandharpur has seen multiple cases of fraud. In January, a self-styled priest was booked for charging ₹11,000 from devotees for easy darshan of Lord Vitthal. In March, seven devotees were conned into buying fake darshan passes; the authorities found them to be fake while scanning. Similar such incidents prompted the Solapur district administration to ban VIP darshan during this year's Ashadhi Wari. Solapur district collector Kumar Ashirwad said that the ban on VIP darshan is part of a broader effort to ensure fairness and maintain order. 'This year, we declared a no-vehicle zone from Chauphala to the Vitthal temple. Golf carts were provided for senior citizens, but VIP darshan has been completely banned. Violations will invite action under the Disaster Management Act,' he said. The ban came after reports that private agents were charging astronomical fees from all manner of devotees for 'VIP access', creating a law-and-order risk. In Tuljapur, a similar situation unfolded at the Tuljabhavani temple with VIP passes being misused. The passes, issued by trustees, were being resold by agents for a profit. So much so that in May this year, the Dharashiv district administration scrapped the VIP pass system and introduced a ₹200 online pass issued directly by the temple trust. While the aforementioned cases are separate, the common thread tying them together is the use of digital manipulation, emotional exploitation, and gaps in oversight. In almost all cases, devotees were contacted through WhatsApp groups, social media, and fraudulent websites—channels that are difficult to regulate in real time. For many devotees who had saved for months and travelled long distances, these experiences were not just financial setbacks but also the cause of great emotional distress. Instead of blessings, they were left with a sense of betrayal. Temple trusts and local authorities have since issued advisories urging devotees to use only official websites or government-authorised platforms for bookings and donations. Devotees have been warned against scanning QR codes from messages or social media posts. Overall, these incidents have triggered calls for stronger verification systems, improved transparency, and tighter digital security across religious institutions. With the holy Hindu month of Shravan having just begun, there is now a crying need to ensure that the faithful are not targeted in the name of devotion.

Waqf Board to offer Intermediate education with IAS/IPS coaching

Vijayawada: Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Waqf Board Sheikh Abdul Azeez announced plans to provide free residential intermediate education along with coaching for IAS and IPS examinations to meritorious students. He urged the community to join him in this endeavour, stating, 'Walk with me, and together we will uplift the Muslim community.' The announcement came during the 5th Waqf Board meeting, presided over by Chairman Abdul Azeez held here on Monday at the Imdad Ghar Complex near Kaleswara Rao Market in Vijayawada. All agenda items presented during the meeting were unanimously passed. Following the board meeting, Abdul Azeez met with several Muthawallis and managing committee members appointed in the previous board meeting and handed over their appointment letters. Addressing the newly appointed members, Abdul Azeez stated, 'What I am giving you are not positions, but responsibilities.' He lamented that in the past, the Waqf Board had not done enough for the welfare of the Muslim community. He highlighted that while many philanthropists had donated thousands of acres of land, approximately 30,000 acres of the nearly 70,000 acres of Waqf land have been encroached upon and are no longer under their control. Furthermore, he noted that about 15,000 acres of the remaining land have been acquired by the government.
