Dortmund complete Club World Cup last eight line-up with win over Monterrey

Serhou Guirassy scored two early goals and Borussia Dortmund held on to defeat CF Monterrey 2-1 on Tuesday night in Atlanta to reach the Fifa Club World Cup quarter-finals. Karim Adeyemi assisted both to bring Guirassy's tournament total to three. German Berterame scored his third of the competition early in a much-improved second half for Monterrey that gave their German opponents some nervy moments. That included Sergio Ramos' header early in second-half stoppage time that missed narrowly wide of the top left corner. Dortmund prevailed to become the fifth and final European side to reach the last eight, the second from Germany along with Bayern Munich. Borussia Dortmund will face Real Madrid on Saturday in East Rutherford, N.J. Monterrey was the last of five Concacaf entrants eliminated after Inter Miami's 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in another round-of-16 clash on Sunday. Berterame cut Monterrey's deficit to 2-1 with a powerful downward header inside the right post after an initial cross from the left took a fortunate deflection off teammate Erick Aguirre. Eleven minutes later, Monterrey's Jesus Corona was played into a one-on-one by Sergio Canales's throughball, but he fired his potential game-tying effort straight at Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a defender closing. Guirassy and Adeyemi combined twice in the opening 24 minutes. In the 14th, Guirassy took a pass at the edge of the 18-yard box from Ramy Bensebaini with his back to goal and quickly slotted the ball to Adeyemi next to him. Adeyemi's instant return pass played Guirassy into position for a low finish inside the left post and beyond the outstretched leg of charging goalkeeper Esteban Andrada. Guirassy could have had a hat-trick before half-time. In the 31st minute, he fired narrowly wide of the right post after Jobe Bellingham's feed. In the 34th, Andrada's remarkable recovery and save denied him after a cross from Pascal Gross.

F1 chief wants to see record-breaking Silverstone stay on calendar for good

The Formula One chief executive, Stefano Domenicali, has said he would like the British Grand Prix at Silverstone to remain on the F1 calendar for ever, with the event set to host what is expected to be the largest meeting in the sport's history, reaching half a million people over four days this weekend. The British GP, which has been on the calendar since F1 began in 1950, is expected to sell out with record numbers and Domenicali acknowledged it was part of a large and thriving F1 business in Britain, which he hopes can be improved by working closer with the UK government when he meets the prime minister, Keir Starmer, and other government officials at Downing Street on Wednesday afternoon. Last year Silverstone extended its contract with F1 to host the race until 2034, one of many long-term deals the sport has concluded recently, including Austria extending to 2041 last week, but Domenicali said the British GP was such a unique event for the sport in size and interest it could negotiate a deal of even greater longevity. 'Silverstone has the right characteristics to stay for ever in the calendar,' he said. 'There's no other places where you can develop such a huge event in the UK. I don't see any other places, to be honest. 'In the past the relationship with the Silverstone promoters has been intense and they know that. Our approach is to find the best situation. I don't see Silverstone not being able, if they want, to do what others have already done. We've done already last year a big step, never done before.' The meeting on Wednesday, to celebrate F1's 75th anniversary, will include senior figures from F1, including drivers and team principals as well as apprentices and members of the all-female F1 Academy. It is hoped to be part of a developing relationship with the government to work better with the sport, notably in areas including infrastructure and over the effects of Brexit on F1, with seven of the 10 teams based in the UK. F1 is now an increasingly important industrial player in the UK. It is worth £12bn to the economy annually and employs 6,000 people directly, with a further 41,000 in the 4,500 associated supply chain companies. 'I will highlight to the prime minister the technology and the centres of excellence that are in the UK,' Domenicali said. 'Of the fact that with Brexit there are complications for movements, there are complications for the visas. I'm saying that because I think that it's relevant to keep the possibility for people to be attracted to work here. Because if you lose that link, then immediately the centre could be moving other places.' Visa issues for entry to the UK also still exist for those coming to work here in F1 and Domenicali hoped what is a continuing dialogue would prove fruitful. 'We have already formally presented in order to see if in the agenda of the government there will be a sort of attention to this, it's our duty to present respectfully in the right way to them,' he said. 'Of course, there is the hope for the government to understand if there is a way to have some exceptions or a way to work around the needs that we have. We will not decide the priority on which your government will dictate the agenda for the next step but we're going to do it in the right way.'

Sam Kerr sports a VERY different look as she joins some of the world's biggest soccer stars in new campaign

Matildas captain Sam Kerr has turned heads with her new look after appearing alongside some of the world's best footballers in a recently launched Nike campaign. Kerr, 31, joined the likes of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, Real Madrid 's Kylian Mbappé, Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer, Spanish forward Alexia Putellas and Brazilian icon Ronaldinho in the clip where attack-minded play is lauded. In the Scary Good advertising campaign, Kerr is labelled 'Australia's most dangerous striker.' It comes as Kerr, 31, inches towards a return to the pitch after 18 months out while she recovers from rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee. Her actual return date to competitive football remains unknown, but both the Matildas and Chelsea would have been buoyed by the recent scenes at the Sam Kerr Football Centre in Western Australia. Kerr was back running and in the gym, and with the Women's Super League beginning on September 6, the Blues want her approaching peak fitness. She was not named in the team's 33-player squad to take on Slovenia and Panama in friendlies to be held on June 26 and 29, and July 5 and 8. New Matildas coach Joe Montemurro stressed patience is key with Kerr, who is also desperate to play in the Asian Cup next year on home soil. 'It's fundamentally a situation where she's now building her physical capacity, and we'll monitor that,' he said. 'The important thing is, we are working with Chelsea to make sure she's right for pre-season. 'It is an individual sort of process, but it's great to have her around the group, and her energy is fantastic.' Kerr's progress with the knee has been the subject of heavy speculation as it has taken longer than expected. In April, Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor revealed Kerr would not return before the end of the Women's Super League season in England. In early June, Montemurro revealed that the striker had been forced to undergo a second surgical 'intervention' on a fresh mystery injury that had been kept a secret from fans. It was reported that Kerr returned to Australia to undergo the procedure and she made a surprise appearance at the A-League Women's grand final in May. That visit came just after Kerr and her fiancée - fellow footballer Kristie Mewis - announced the arrival of their baby boy Jagger. The couple's relationship began around 2020, gaining public attention during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 when they shared a heartfelt moment on the field. They officially confirmed their relationship in August 2021 through an Instagram post. In September 2023 they got engaged, announcing it publicly in November of the same year. Their engagement was followed by the news in November 2024 that they were expecting their first child. They are expected to marry in December this year.
