
You may have been using your oven wrong all this time, expert explains
Which, the consumer advisory company, has shared a clip on how many of us might be misusing our ovens by failing to understand the basics of the daily appliance, The Mirror reports.
A video shared on TikTok explains the correct way to use the oven by learning what the symbols on the appliance actually mean, when many home cooks don't have a clue about what they represent. It's advised to brush up on the meaning of such symbols in order to make sure that your food is cooked safely and to ensure that it as tasty as it can be.
In the video, viewers are talked through the meaning of the various symbols.
The presenter explains: "Are you using your oven wrong? You probably know the classic fan oven symbol. Good for most types of cooking, especially when you use more than one shelf."
While discussing the symbol on the oven with a simple line at the bottom, she explained that: "In this case, heat only comes from the bottom. Good for gently cooking stews and casseroles and crisping up the base of a pizza or pastry."
But conversely, when there is a thin line at the top and bottom of a symbol, this represents heat coming from both sections, which is aimed at single-shelf cooking of food items such as pastries, scones or large cakes. It is also good for roasting meat.
The grill symbol, which some people struggle with, was also explained, with the presenter saying: "This is the grill. Some should be used with the door open, others closed, so always check your oven's manual. Place your food close to the grill, but with a little space in between, so it's not touching.
"The grill is great for anything that sizzles, like sausages and bacon. [It's] also handy for browning off meat or the top of a lasagne. You can also grill with the fan on, which spreads the grill's heat - good for cooking through thicker pieces of meat or fish without heating the whole oven or burning the top."
Another symbol is a grill sign that shows a line at the bottom and that represents a grill with a lower heating element and this is aimed at the cooking of pies, tarts or pizzas - essentially foods that require a crispy base and a brown top.
Another easily-confused symbol that is showed in the video is the half-grill setting which, when turned on, means that only one part of the grill gets hot so you will have to put food near that area of the grill to make sure it cooks properly and doesn't come out raw.
This video has been viewed almost 10,000 times since it was first shared and the comments underneath the post suggest that many followers were not aware of what the different symbols means. Person setting oven
One commented: "I'm watching this in the knowledge that I only ever use one setting and I will never change." Another added: "My dad's oven broke and he called an electrician around. Turns out he's only used his grill and never used his oven function. How he's survived this long is beyond me."
A third replied: "We just turn on the oven, press the go button and hope for the best." Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "Thank you so much for this."
Someone else also chimed in with: "Handy and informative. I use three of the settings mentioned. There are others. I'll have to experiment."

'Hugely significant' Irish archive donated to the State will be unveiled in Cork
A once long-lost archive linked to writer and historian Daniel MacCarthy Glas, a descendant of one of the great 13th-century Gaelic families of Ireland, is to go on display in Cork almost eight years after its donation to the State. The vast trove of hugely significant material, which dates from the 1700s and 1800s, will be unveiled in the Cork City and County Archives in Blackpool later this month as part of Heritage Week. City archivist Brian McGree, who along with other archivists has spent months painstakingly listing, arranging, and cataloguing the collection, said the Daniel MacCarthy Glas Archive and Exhibition will remain on display at other locations around Cork over the next year. It comprises of 1,200 unique items and is of major historical importance, containing personal letters, manuscripts, photographs, and drawings from Daniel and other family members. The collection comprises an estimated 1,500 unique items including personal letters, manuscripts, photographs and drawings from Daniel and other family members. Check it out HERE and happy reading 'The scope of the collection is immense, documenting a range of topics — from the MacCarthy aristocratic lineage, to 19th century poetry and historiography, the Irish nationalist movement, the history of early modern Ireland, the French Revolution of 1848, the British Empire in India and South Africa, emigration, and the Great Famine and its dire impact on the local population in West Cork,' Mr McGee said. However, it includes one document Mr McGee described as of 'immense cultural and historical significance' — a 1784 family pedigree of the Gaelic prince Jeremiah MacCarthy (Diarmuid an Dúna) compiled by the famous poet/schoolmaster John Collins of Myross, known as 'the last bard of Munster'. Written on parchment in a combination of both Irish and English, the pedigree bears the wax seal of John Butler, a former bishop of Cork and later Baron Dunboyne, who was a controversial figure. Historian Michelle O'Mahony and senior Cork City Council archivist Brian McGee with two of the collection of paintings which have been donated to the State as part of the archive. Experts say it is one of very few original manuscripts in existence from Collins or any other Gaelic scholar from the period. The pedigree has been subject to a detailed process of transcription and interpretation by Cornelius Buttimer, formerly of UCC. Daniel MacCarthy Glas's family was directly descended from the princes of Carbery, the MacCarthy Reaghs and the MacCarthy Glas, based at Togher Castle near Dunmanway in Co Cork — the 'Glas' differentiating this branch of the MacCarthys from others in the region. His grandfather emigrated from Cork to England in 1763, and Daniel was born into a wealthy Irish Catholic shipping and coal merchant family in London in 1807. Educated to a high standard, he was very well-read and well-travelled, was a fluent Irish speaker, and took a major interest in his ancestry and in Irish history, writing two important books: The Life and Letters of Florence MacCarthy Reagh (1867); and A Historical Pedigree of the Sliochd Feidhlimidh, the MacCarthys of Gleannacroim (1875). He contributed historical articles to The Nation and various journals during the Irish historical awakening of the 19th century. Senior Cork City Council archivist Brian McGee and historian Michelle O'Mahony — who helped secure the Daniel MacCarthy Glas archive from the US — with some of the paintings which have been donated to the State. Many of his works involved painstaking research through State papers and other records, and he was in regular and detailed correspondence with celebrated Cork historian Richard Caulfield, the first librarian at UCC, and with a large circle of other Irish antiquarians, archaeologists, and early pioneers of Irish scholarship during the Irish historical awakening of the 19th century. He was also a noted philanthropist, sponsoring the education of students in Dunmanway, helping Catholic institutions, and helping to preserve historic buildings and monuments such as Togher Castle and St Patrick's Church in his native Dunmanway. Some of his family were poets and writers, and some held important positions, reflecting the fact that they intermarried with the British elite. His father-in-law, for example, was Rear-Admiral Home Riggs Popham, who served in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He invented a flag signal code adopted by the British royal navy in 1803, which was used by British naval hero Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar to keep navy tactics secret. Daniel was very close to his daughter-in-law, Alice, who kept all his letters, writings, notes, and notebooks. The archive then made its way to Oregon over a century ago, where it was kept safe by later generations, finally ending up with a descendant, Susan MacCarthy, who agreed in 2017 to donate it to the state. Mr McGee said the complex process of repatriating the archive was started a number of years ago, and it was successfully concluded thanks to the efforts of Dunmanway historian Michelle O'Mahony, Mervyn O'Driscoll of the school of history at UCC, Nigel McCarthy of the McCarthy DNA Project, and the archivists of the Cork City and County Archives Service. Ms O'Mahony said she is delighted the collection is ready to be unveiled. 'It is of immense importance to Cork City, Cork county, nationally, and internationally. There was a lot of work involved in cataloguing it, and I'm just delighted to see it finally going on display,' she said.

Heartbreaking vid shows toddler play near doomed plane days before horror crash that killed two-year-old and his parents
HEARTBREAKING footage has emerged showing a toddler playing around a small plane just days before it crashed and killed the entire family. While the mum and dad were pronounced dead at the scene, the toddler was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. He succumbed to his wounds soon after. A video showing Paxton playing around the plane just three days before the crash has now gone viral. The clip, posted by mum Jestene, shows the toddler riding a tricycle around the doomed plane, which appears to be parked inside a hangar. Jestene wrote in the captions: "Imagine growing up riding your bike around your dad's plane before your dad flies you and your mom wherever you want." Data from FlightAware shows that the plane travelled between McMinnville, Oregon, Fresno, California, and Nampa, Idaho one week before the crash. The family's loved ones called the loss 'immeasurable", saying, 'to say we miss them doesn't come close.' Jeremiah LeRoy, Brandon's cousin, told KTVB in a statement: 'Together, they were building a life marked by love, purpose, and promise. 'Though their time here was far too short, their legacy is everlasting — a legacy of love, courage, joy, and selfless service. It added: "Once on site, the investigator will begin the process of documenting the scene and examining the aircraft. "The aircraft will then be recovered to a secure facility for further evaluation."

'I'm a professional cleaner, I always start with one task when tackling kitchen'
Keeping the home clean is an ongoing task that requires attention to many rooms and areas, especially the kitchen, which typically contains major appliances like a fridge, oven and cooker, along with a sink, storage units, cooking tools and countertops. She explained: "So the same with every room that I clean I always start off with high dusting." Charlotte showed how she starts by dusting high up on walls and ceilings using an extendable magnetic duster, Mirror UK reports. Then she tackles the cupboard fronts with a microfibre cloth, ensuring she sprays any cleaning products onto the cloth rather than directly onto the cupboards to prevent staining and dripping. She also cleans the dining table with the same cloth, along with everything on the table, like placemats. The cleaning professional then wipes down the chairs. Following this, she moves on to cleaning the countertops using the Jangro Premium Citrus Cleaner, scrubbing it across all the surfaces. Charlotte sanitises all the switches as she navigates the kitchen, including any appliances. She then tackles the cooker's backsplash, followed by the gas hob. The cleaning expert uses Bar Keepers Power Clean to banish grime from the hob's base. She buffs it dry with a clean cloth and ensures that the product is fully removed, cautioning that Bar Keepers Power Clean contains acid which could cause damage if left on surfaces. Charlotte uses a soap-filled scouring sponge to clean the upper parts of the hob, such as the burner caps and plates. She finds this sponge effective at scrubbing away tough brown stains that often appear on hobs. Next, Charlotte scrubs the pan supports using either washing up liquid or the same citrus cleaner she applied to the countertops. The professional cleaner added: "I then went ahead and cleaned the island all around the sink before I moved onto the sink." The bin area is next on her list. Charlotte sprays it with disinfectant, allows it to work its magic, then wipes it down. She continues by disinfecting all door handles, light switches and sockets, then dusts the skirting boards and door frames. This is followed by "general dusting", which includes cabinets, mirrors and lamps. Charlotte concludes her routine by vacuuming and mopping the entire floor. In her TikTok video caption, she reveals that this thorough process is her "regular weekly maintenance clean."
