Children Of FRU Crash Victims Receive SSPN Benefits
IPOH, May 18 (Bernama) -- The three children of the late Sergeant Mohd Roslan Abd Rahim, a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel who was killed in a recent road crash, are eligible to receive RM193,000 in benefits through the National Education Savings Scheme (Simpan SSPN).
National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim said the benefits were derived from the late 46-year-old FRU officer's savings under two products – Simpan SSPN Prime and Simpan SSPN Plus.
The late Mohd Roslan had opened a Simpan SSPN Prime account for himself on May 7, making him eligible for a takaful protection benefit of RM1,000 and a death benefit of RM3,000.
'He also opened three Simpan SSPN Plus accounts under the Intan Package for his three children on March 31, 2019. With a monthly commitment of RM30 per account – RM20 for savings and RM10 for takaful – he qualified for Simpan SSPN Plus benefits, including an accidental death takaful coverage of RM60,000 per account, totalling RM180,000 across all three.
'Additionally, the beneficiaries are entitled to a death benefit of RM9,000 for the three accounts. This brings the total Simpan SSPN Plus benefits to RM189,000, and the overall benefits including Simpan SSPN Prime to RM193,000,' she said during the PTPTN Ziarah Kasih programme visit to Mohd Roslan's family home here today.
Norliza said another FRU personnel killed in the same accident, Corporal Amiruddin Zabri, 38, who was also a Simpan SSPN Prime depositor, received a takaful protection benefit and death benefit totalling RM4,000.
As part of the Ziarah Kasih programme, PTPTN also visited five homes of the FRU accident victims in Perak today.
During the visits, Norliza said PTPTN had provided corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions in the form of cash amounting to RM15,000 to the children of the FRU crash victims, involving 15 individuals, with each receiving RM1,000 in the form of a Simpan SSPN Prime account.
'PTPTN hopes that through this CSR contribution and the takaful protection and death benefits from Simpan SSPN, the financial burden of the families left behind can be eased.

The event, officiated by NRES secretary-general Datuk Dr Ching Thoo a/l Kim, featured cultural performances such as Siamese dance, silat, and muay thai, along with service counters from the Health Ministry, National Registration Department, Road Transport Department, and Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad, as well as an elephant show by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. The KAM initiative is supported by a whole-of-government approach, involving several agencies, including the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, Kedah Federal Development Office, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. It aims to uplift the well-being of rural communities by improving basic infrastructure and addressing local development challenges. Under the SAM programme, the RM100,000 allocation for SKPA will fund the maintenance of classroom facilities and support the implementation of a smart classroom, as well as Digital Learning Enhancement activities to equip students with relevant digital skills.

Six-year-old boy sets MBR record by identifying 65 currencies in a minute
SEREMBAN: A six-year-old boy, D. Devakshean, has made history by identifying 65 different currencies from around the world in just one minute, earning him a place in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR). His achievement, recognised as 'Most Foreign Currencies Identified by a Child in One Minute,' highlights his extraordinary memory and learning abilities. Devakshean's mother, G. Devamalar, 37, shared that his fascination with national flags began when he was just one year old. By the age of two, he could already name over 200 countries and cities. 'His memory is exceptional—whatever we show him, he remembers. Not just flags and currencies, but many other things too,' she said after the MBR certificate presentation by representative V. Menaga. The young prodigy's parents have nurtured his interests without pressure. 'He loves watching educational content on YouTube, where he learns independently. He prefers reading and learning over playing—it's his passion,' Devamalar explained. The family spent a month preparing before applying for MBR recognition this year. Devakshean, born on September 10, 2019, enjoys Mathematics, English, and Science and dreams of becoming a firefighter. UMS Students Gain Experience As Volunteers At Borneo Flora Festival
LABUAN, July 27 (Bernama) -- About 100 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students are gaining hands-on experience as volunteers at the five-day Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) 2025, which began yesterday. First-year student Muhd Alif Hazim, 21, from the university's main campus, said he travelled to Labuan specifically to volunteer at the inaugural festival. 'This is the biggest event I've joined this year. I wanted to improve my communication skills and meet new people,' said the Computer Science (Data Science) student. He said the Borneo Tropical Flora and the Borneo Rainforest Jewel exhibitions drew strong interest from visitors on the first day, particularly for showcasing various floral species, including tulips, sunflowers, pohon pontianak, and orchids. Siti Aisyah Masyop, 23, a student from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, said this was her first volunteer experience and an opportunity to gain new knowledge and interact with the public. The Selangor-born student said their tasks included giving directions and assisting visitors with taking photographs. 'Visitors have been friendly and we always ask if they need any help. With the large crowd, some may be unsure of where to go,' she said. Third-year student Anne Roza Robin, 22, from the Faculty of International Finance, said she had been involved in the festival since its initial flower-planting phase. Hailing from Keningau, she described the experience as meaningful, especially in preparing herself for the working world.
