Audience moved to tears during pantomime of FRU crash tragedy
IPOH: A sombre atmosphere filled the air at the Banquet Hall of the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building as attendees were moved to tears by a pantomime performance paying tribute to victims of the tragic Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) accident in Teluk Intan. The 15-minute performance, titled 'Sang Beret Merah' (The Red Beret), depicted the final journey of the FRU officers who had been assigned on duty during the Chitra Pournami festival in Teluk Intan on May 13, which later resulted in a tragic crash. Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, also witnessed the performance after gracing the Perak state-level Warriors' Day 2025 celebration earlier. Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad was moved to tears. The performance featured 20 police officers alongside 30 members of the Persatuan Deklamasi Lakon Perak. Accompanying the act was a poem recital by the state Cultural Council Deputy President Azmi Ismail, ASP Samsudin Hussin from the Perak Contingent Police Headquarters and Detective Sergeant Major Bashira Sharif from the Criminal Investigation Department. The performance grew even more emotional when original footage of the FRU members involved in the accident was shown. The tragic incident that shook the nation occurred about 8.50am, involving a truck carrying 15 FRU personnel from Unit 5 Ipoh. The group was returning to Ipoh after completing their assignment in Teluk Intan when their vehicle collided with a lorry transporting stones along Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam. Nine FRU personnel were killed in the crash, two were seriously injured, and seven others sustained minor injuries. Those killed were Sergeant S. Perumal, 44, from Lahat, Ipoh; Sergeant Mohd Roslan Abd Rahim, 46, from Tanjung Rambutan, Ipoh; Corporal Mohd Pozli Jaudin, 41, from Gunung Rapat, Ipoh; Corporal Nurit Pandak, 34, (Kampar) and Corporal Amiruddin Zabri, 38, (Gopeng). Also killed were Corporal Mohamad Hilmi Mohd Azlan, 38, from Taiping; Corporal Muhamad Akmal Muhamad, 35, from Kuala Kurau; Lance Corporal Damarrulan Abdul Latif, 33, from Ipoh; and Constable Akmal Wafi Annuar, 28, from Lunas, Kedah.

Nation honours nine fallen FRU heroes in poignant Warriors' Day tribute
IPOH: Tears welled up and silence filled the air as 'Sang Beret Merah' delivered a powerful, wordless tribute to Malaysia's fallen heroes, stirring deep emotions during the state-level Warriors' Day celebration. The poignant performance paid homage to nine brave souls from the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) Sungai Senam, who lost their lives in a devastating road accident on May 13. With raw emotion and quiet dignity, policemen and the Perak Dramatisation Association relived their comrades' final moments through powerful gestures and haunting silence that moved the audience to tears. Among those present was the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, who joined the audience in a moment of shared, silent grief. As the pantomime unfolded, many struggled to contain their emotions. Quiet sobs echoed through the Dewan Bankuet here, especially when a heart-wrenching montage played on screen, showing the FRU officers smiling inside their truck, unaware that these fleeting moments of calm would be their last. The tribute continued with a soul-stirring poetry recital by Perak Cultural Council deputy president Azmi Ismail, Assistant Superintendent Samsudin Hussin, and detective Sergeant Major Bashira Sharif from the Perak Police headquarters. Their voices, heavy with sorrow, trembled as they spoke of courage, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bond of brotherhood. The tragedy struck around 9am on May 13, when a truck carrying 18 members of FRU Unit 5 was hit by a heavily loaded lorry believed to have suffered a steering failure. Eight officers died at the scene. Another succumbed to his injuries at Teluk Intan Hospital, leaving behind a trail of heartbreak for families, colleagues, and a nation in mourning. The unit had been on its way back to base after completing duty for the Chitra Pournami festival in Hilir Perak, a mission that would, tragically, become their last. The nine deceased members were Sergeant S. Perumal; Sergeant Mohd Roslan Abd Rahim; Corporal Mohd Pozli Jaudin; Corporal Nurit Pandak; Corporal Amiruddin Zabri; Corporal Mohamad Hilmi Mohd Azlan; Corporal Muhamad Akmal Muhamad; Lance Corporal Damarrulan Abdul Latif; and Constable Akmal Wafi Annuar.

'This is business': Fiji Rugby negotiating to host 'home' Test matches in UK
Fiji's prop Peni Ravai celebrates after scoring a try during the France 2023 Rugby World Cup quarter-final match against England. Photo: AFP The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is currently negotiating the hosting of three Test matches against Six Nations teams - England, Scotland and Wales - away in their respective countries. FRU Board chairman John Sanday confirmed the negotiatons with RNZ Pacific on Tuesday. He said that as a Tier 1 team, the Flying Fijians are now entitled to play against the top 10 teams in World Rugby. The matches against England, Scotland and Wales are classified as "home" tests for Fiji and are scheduled for the July international Test window. However, the FRU wants to host the matches in the three countries to maximise financial returns. Sanday said being in Tier 1 means a lot and the demand is also greater. He said the FRU is now a global business and the thinking must be in the commercial mindset. "In order for the FRU to become a global brand and a financially successful business, we have to make the tough but smart decisions in the interim," Sanday said while confirming the union is taking the home matches away. "We will eventually get the games here once we can demonstrate that it will be financially successful. There is just no way we can host it at home at the moment as we dont have the stadium with the minimum stipulations. "This is business and it must be economically viable." The former Flying Fijian said they want to confirm the deals by September. He said "we are very confident" about getting the games hosted in the three countries they will play against. "It's just getting the right stadiums for each match. That's why we ned to go up and finalize and sign." He said winning the test matches is critical for the Flying Fijians rankings and also will help in attracting major sponsors. "We move into preparation and build up to those tests as it will have a huge impact on our ranking if we can beat Engald and Scotland," he stated. "Moving higher up in the rankings and showing the world a great brand and style of winning rugby, we can attract better terms and also pitch to bigger global brands for major sponsorship." FRU Board chair John Sanday Photo: Fiji Rugby Union The end of the year tour for 2026, which annually happens in November, will likely feature matches against Ireland, France and Italy. The Flying Fijians were recently given Tier 1 status by World Rugby and have been included in the Rugby Nations Championship, which is scheduled to kick off in 2026. The new competiton will have the Six Nations teams of England, Wales, Scotland, France, Italy and Ireland plus Rugby Championship teams Australia, Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa, along with Japan, the new inclusion with Fiji. A close loss to the Wallabies early July and a win over Scotland were the two first Tier One test matches for the Flying Fijians, who will defend their Pacific Nations Cup title from the end of August. The side is also scheduled to play England, France and Spain in November.

New safety measures under review after deadly FRU accident
KUALA LUMPUR: Police are currently in discussions with various stakeholders regarding improvements to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) related to personnel movement and convoy safety, following the fatal crash involving members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU). Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said they are also reviewing technical proposals and their compliance with road safety standards and regulations set by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). "Following the tragic accident that occurred in Teluk Intan on May 13, which claimed nine lives involving members of the FRU, the police have taken several immediate and comprehensive steps to improve the SOP related to personnel movement and convoy safety. "Regarding the expected enforcement date of the new SOP and its monitoring method, the police are currently in discussions with various relevant stakeholders, including on technical proposals and compliance with road safety standards and JPJ regulations," he said in a written parliamentary reply. He was responding to Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu), who had queried the matter. He outlined the key preliminary findings by the police on weaknesses in the existing SOP that contributed to the accident. These include the use of tactical lorries to transport personnel over long distances without basic safety systems such as seat belts; insufficient ventilation and interior lighting in the lorries; disorganised interior space lacking separation between passengers and equipment; and vehicles not designed for long-distance travel, which can cause fatigue and stress to personnel. "The existing vehicles were not designed for long-distance endurance, which can cause fatigue and stress to personnel," he said.

Freehold Royalties (TSE:FRU) Is Paying Out A Dividend Of CA$0.09
Freehold Royalties Ltd. (TSE:FRU) has announced that it will pay a dividend of CA$0.09 per share on the 15th of August. This means the annual payment is 8.2% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry. We've found 21 US stocks that are forecast to pay a dividend yield of over 6% next year. See the full list for free. Estimates Indicate Freehold Royalties' Could Struggle to Maintain Dividend Payments In The Future Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Before this announcement, Freehold Royalties was paying out 109% of what it was earning, and not generating any free cash flows either. Paying out such a large dividend compared to earnings while also not generating free cash flows is a major warning sign for the sustainability of the dividend as these levels are certainly a bit high. Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to fall by 22.4% over the next year. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 147%, which is definitely a bit high to be sustainable going forward. See our latest analysis for Freehold Royalties Dividend Volatility The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from CA$1.68 total annually to CA$1.08. Doing the maths, this is a decline of about 4.3% per year. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems. Freehold Royalties Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. It's encouraging to see that Freehold Royalties has been growing its earnings per share at 102% a year over the past five years. Although earnings per share is up nicely Freehold Royalties is paying out 109% of its earnings as dividends, which we feel is borderline unsustainable without extenuating circumstances. Freehold Royalties' Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about Freehold Royalties' payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. While we generally think the level of distributions are a bit high, we wouldn't rule it out as becoming a good dividend payer in the future as its earnings are growing healthily. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock. Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for Freehold Royalties that investors need to be conscious of moving forward.
