UK visa rules blocked Hong Kong footballer's West Ham trial. Now Japan beckons
Hong Kong Football Club's teenaged goalkeeper James Wright has said the weekend's HKFC Standard Chartered Soccer Sevens provided a rare gateway for local talent to play at an elite level overseas.
Following a string of impressive displays in last year's tournament, Wright was invited for a trial with West Ham United, the club he supports.
That opportunity fell through after Wright arrived in England, because despite owning a British passport, he counted as a foreigner under Fifa rules and West Ham opted against giving a triallist one of its quota of slots for those not meeting UK work permit criteria.
A week-long stint with Charlton Athletic was arranged instead, with Wright not offered a deal but told he was welcome to train in future with this season's League One play-off finalists.
Soon after playing in this year's Sevens, 17-year-old Wright was poised to jet to Japan for a four-day tryout with Kamatamare Sanuki, set up by former Hong Kong international Au Yeung Yiu-chung, who used to play for the J3 League team.

'This tournament gives young players like me exposure to big clubs like Aston Villa and West Ham, and I had the contact from West Ham after last year,' Wright said.

Hong Kong sprinter Leung Kwan-yi holds back tears of disappointment despite 100m win
There was nothing but disappointment for sprinter Leung Kwan-yi despite winning the women's 100m final at the Hong Kong Athletics Series on Saturday. With the meet at Wan Chai Sports Ground the final chance for local athletes to qualify for the city's National Games squad, Leung had to hold back her tears after she failed to clock a time better than her 12.12 seconds, which put her ahead of five other sprinters on the day. With Hong Kong co-hosting the November Games with Guangdong and Macau, the city can send up to three athletes and one relay team in each event without meeting the qualifying standards. The three who will represent Hong Kong at the women's 100m sprint at the National Games are Chan Pui-kei, Kong Chun-ki and Chloe Pak Hoi-man. Pak, who qualified for Saturday's final in second but had to withdraw for precautionary reasons, clocked 11.84 at last month's Hong Kong Athletics Championships to snatch the third spot on the Games list. The 19-year-old is expected to travel to Germany in three weeks alongside 74 other athletes for the World University Games, which runs from July 16 to 27 in Rhine-Ruhr.

Purton moved to 126 winners for the campaign – four short of last season's tally with five meetings remaining – and while he's miles off his Hong Kong record tally of 179 victories, he's striking at a ridiculous 23 per cent. While Purton's first two victories came aboard progressive gallopers on the turf, he completed his three-timer atop a far more exposed horse on a wet-slow all-weather track. Backed late to jump the $3.2 favourite, Fashion Legend travelled nicely just forward of midfield in the Class Four Sha Tau Kok River Handicap (1,650m) before whistling past his rivals in the straight to salute by a length and a quarter.
