Bodies of mother and son found after Durban shooting
According to Highway Mail, Garrith Jamieson from ALS Paramedics says paramedics responded to calls of a shooting incident on Sarnia Road, before Stella Road in the Hillary area, last night.
'On arrival, paramedics found SAPS already in attendance and were shown into a house. Paramedics found two people believed to be a mother in her 60s and a male believed to be her son in his 30s who had sustained gunshot wounds to their heads.
'Paramedics assessed both of them, however, they showed no signs of life and both were declared deceased on the scene,' explains Jamieson.

Next Stay Close ✕ According to the charge sheet, Madolo is accused of murdering Vuyolwethu Makongo, Siyanda Thongana, Afezile Thongana, Hlomla Thongana, Somile Vithela, Luyolo Zoneleni, Loyiso Jezile, and Phumlani Zoya. Police released Madolo's image alongside that of Loyiso Matinisi, stating that they could assist with crucial information about the killings. During proceedings, the State prosecutor informed Magistrate Keith Le Keur that there were media applications to take photographs and videos of the accused, but said he would oppose the publication of Madolo's face, while in court, due to an outstanding identity parade. The prosecutor said the media could, however, use pictures that were supplied before his arrest. 'There was a previous matter where his image had been published, but there is a significant difference between then and now,' the prosecutor told the court. Madolo responded directly to the magistrate, saying: 'I saw my picture trending and that is why I handed myself to the police. I have not changed, I still look the same way. And my face has been published before.' The State confirmed Madolo was arrested on June 30 and that the investigation is still in its early stages. Madolo initially indicated he would appoint a private attorney, but later opted to be represented by Legal Aid counsel for his first appearance. His lawyer told the court the accused was unhappy with the prosecutor's efforts to block the publication of his image. 'He said he is unhappy with the prosecutor. I can confirm his picture was all over social media. My client also said he doesn't want to stand for the identity parade because his face was everywhere already, and that is why he went to the police station,' said the Legal Aid representative. 'The weight of the identity parade will be determined at a later stage.' The State said it would oppose bail and is in the process of confirming whether Madolo has any pending matters or previous convictions. 'The accused before the court faces eight counts of murder, one for possession of an unlicensed firearm, the calibre of which is still unknown, and one count of possession of ammunition,' the prosecutor said. He added that Madolo had been linked to two separate crime scenes through eyewitnesses. 'Count two to 10 relate to the second scene. The two accused allegedly went to that scene. The seven deceased were seated inside a house when they were shot and died on the same day.' The State further indicated that a second suspect remains outstanding and said it intends to charge the accused on the doctrine of common purpose. The matter was postponed to July 9 for an identity parade and for the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine the schedule of the offence and provide bail information. Police ministry denies commissioner arrest claims
The Ministry of Police has dismissed ongoing media speculation suggesting that the national commissioner of police is facing imminent arrest. In a statement issued on June 30, the ministry said it was not informed of any such developments and urged the media to refrain from publishing unverified claims that could destabilise the SAPS. 'We, as the ministry, have not been made aware of such an impending arrest. We have also noted the response from the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) on this speculation,' the statement read. R3 million dating scam case postponed after lawyer's no-show in court

Image: Hawks Three men have appeared in court after they were arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, for defrauding an unsuspecting woman of her R3 million in a dating scam. Last week, IOL reported that a third suspect was arrested for an intense scam where an unidentified woman lost R3 million in the name of love, back in 2024. The victim, whose identity is withheld to protect her from victimisation, said she developed an online relationship with a person she believed was a white man called 'Mark Hermanus', whom she had met on Facebook. Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela said after exchanging numbers, the woman and the scammer started chatting on WhatsApp, and once they had 'gotten to know each other", the scammer asked her to lend him money to pay the medical bills of his sick son. But these weren't modest medical bills, and the unsuspecting woman eventually parted with R3 million, which she deposited into two bank accounts. After the crime was reported to the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, an investigation ensued and the first suspect, Gabriel Okori, was arrested in Cape Town in October 2024. Okori, a Nigerian national, was in November released on bail of R5,000 in November. Okori has been attending his court appearances on charges of fraud and theft. In March, IOL reported that a second suspect, Justice Motsamai Khanyapa, was arrested in connection with the scam. Khanyapa was arrested in Orange Farm, Johannesburg, and he was released on bail of R1,000 by the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. A third suspect, Thabo Derrick Mnguni, was arrested on 23 June. Mnguni was schduled to apply for bail. Okori and Khanyapa are already on bail. "The lawyer for the third suspect did not show up in court. The matter was postponed to 9 July 2025," said Mavimbela. Meanwhile, head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, commended the 'meticulous investigation' conducted by the investigating team, and cautioned members of the public to be vigilant and safeguard themselves against such scams.
