Nama Electricity Distribution to host major regional energy conference in October
Muscat: Nama Electricity Distribution has announced that it will host the 4th edition of IEEE PowerTalks 2025, the region's premier power and energy conference, from October 13–15 at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre in Muscat.
Organised in partnership with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and supported by the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR), the conference will convene global experts, policymakers, technologists and energy leaders to discuss sustainable energy development and support Oman Vision 2040 objectives.
Held under the theme 'Accelerating energy transition in Oman', the event will serve as a key platform for advancing innovation in the power sector. It aims to foster international collaboration, enable knowledge transfer, and encourage the adoption of clean technologies in alignment with national energy transition goals.
IEEE PowerTalks 2025 will spotlight Oman's growing role in the regional energy transformation, particularly as the Sultanate targets 30% renewable energy by 2030 and increased investment in green hydrogen and emissions reduction.
More than 2,000 participants and 100 speakers from over 30 countries are expected to attend. The conference will feature technical sessions, interactive panels, and an exhibition showcasing smart grid solutions, renewable technologies, AI-powered systems and energy storage.

Dhofar leads wheat production in 2024/2025 harvest, says Ministry
Muscat: Wheat production across the Sultanate of Oman recorded a significant increase in the 2024/2025 season, reaching a total of 10,128.341 tonnes, according to statistics issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. The overall cultivated area amounted to 8,327 acres, involving 2,183 farmers from various governorates. The Governorate of Dhofar led national production, contributing 7,723 tonnes, which represents more than 76 per cent of the total yield. The cultivated area in Dhofar spanned 6,400 acres, with 51 farmers participating in the harvest. Other notable contributors included the Governorate of al Dhahirah with 1,118 tonnes from 759 acres, al Dakhiliyah with 877.185 tonnes from 746 acres, and North al Sharqiyah, which produced 34.723 tonnes from 25.5 acres. In the Buraimi Governorate, 80 farmers cultivated 196 acres, yielding 268.7 tonnes. Despite smaller cultivation areas, several governorates reported strong yields, reflecting the Ministry's ongoing support initiatives. For instance, South al Batinah produced 17.424 tonnes from 98 acres, while North al Batinah registered 85.3 tonnes from 81 acres. In South al Sharqiyah, farmers harvested 2.264 tonnes from 16.5 acres. Meanwhile, the Ministry has launched a comprehensive national plan to support local wheat production. The initiative aims to: Enhance food security and contribute to Oman Vision 2040; Provide high-quality seeds to farmers; Offer financial, technical and advisory support; Assist during harvesting operations; Expand wheat cultivation across various governorates; Allocate agricultural land and develop wheat-based products. As part of the government's strategic focus, the ministry highlighted that Dhofar Governorate alone contributes 76–90 per cent of the total national wheat output. Additionally, the number of wheat farmers across the Sultanate increased by 14 per cent compared to the previous season, indicating growing interest in local grain cultivation. The ongoing support underscores the ministry's commitment to achieving sustainable agricultural development and bolstering the Sultanate's self-sufficiency in staple food crops.

SOHAR to get mattress manufacturing facility
Muscat – SOHAR Port and Freezone has signed a land lease agreement with Sweet Night Fine Home (FZC) LLC to establish a mattress manufacturing facility in SOHAR Freezone. This investment reinforces SOHAR's role in driving industrial diversification and sets the foundation for clustering opportunities within the home and comfort manufacturing sector. The project also advances integration into global supply chains, with the potential to localise sourcing and strengthen regional value chains in the long term. The factory will cover an area of 96,000sqm, with a total investment of US$70mn. It is designed to produce up to 3mn mattresses annually, with an initial export focus on the United States, followed by expansion into GCC markets, India, the European Union, and the local market in Oman. Raw materials will be sourced from China, Thailand, Japan, and Korea, enabling the company to manufacture high-quality sleep products for international markets from a single strategic base in SOHAR. Johnson Lim, General Manager of Sweet Night Fine Home's upcoming factory in SOHAR Freezone commented, 'Our decision to invest in SOHAR Freezone was driven by its unmatched location, efficiency, and long-term potential as a regional manufacturing hub. OBG report highlights Oman's economic transformation
Muscat – A global research and consultancy firm together with Oman Investment Authority (OIA) has appreciated the sultanate's efforts to accelerate economic diversification through targeted investment in high-impact sectors. This analysis was done by Oxford Business Group (OBG), which publishes economic intelligence on the markets of the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America. Through its range of print and online products, OBG offers comprehensive and accurate analysis of macroeconomic and sectoral developments, including banking, capital markets, insurance, energy, transport, industry and telecoms. OBG together with OIA published an advisory report on the basis of their market analysis titled Oman's Strategic Vision: The Role of Future Fund Oman in Economic Transformation. The report explored how the sultanate leveraged strategic funding mechanisms and robust governance frameworks to spur economic diversification, foster sustainable growth and strengthen its appeal as a regional business and investment destination. It considered how collaborative partnerships are enhancing competitiveness and positioning Oman as a future-ready economy in line with the national development objectives outlined in Oman Vision 2040.
